Mined != Hacked.

2010-07-29 10:56:04 AM
Nothing was hacked. It is just a massive compilation of what is already publicly available.

2010-07-29 10:56:09 AM
Not "hacked." Hacked implies a breach of security. This was merely harvested from profile information that was publicly available.

2010-07-29 10:56:16 AM
Bowes used code to scan the 500 million Facebook profiles for information not hidden by privacy settings.

So basically, it's a list of publicly available information. The humanity!

2010-07-29 10:56:28 AM
"Personal information" on Facebook is harmless. Oh noes! A hacker got my name, my AIM handle, my alma mater and knows who my siblings are!

2010-07-29 10:56:40 AM
Oh MSNBC... You're so full of win...

2010-07-29 10:56:45 AM
Why is this fail? MSNBC wrote a story about a collection of publicly available information compiled by an outside source and then linked to that file.

This is like complaining about someone calling you after getting your # from the White Pages.

Don't want it there, STFU and remove it.

2010-07-29 10:57:14 AM
and this is why we should turn off public search, lock down your account.. make everything private and don't use stupid ass appz...

2010-07-29 10:57:51 AM
well it's a good thing that:

1. i had all my information locked since the word 'go'
2. my profile is very boring just in case
3. does have 'incriminating photos' of enjoying time at the firing range, so i guess there is that

2010-07-29 10:58:24 AM
So what? I mean what the heck are people putting up on facebook that's so important?

2010-07-29 10:58:28 AM
Google and the other search engines are just as "guilty".

2010-07-29 10:58:35 AM
Well at least this time Facebook isn't selling the information.

2010-07-29 10:58:56 AM
The only people deserving of the FAIL tag are those who are pissed that thier information is included in this file. Maybe you should have paid attention to what boxes you were checking or left unchecked.

2010-07-29 10:59:15 AM
Someone uploaded the information onto The Pirate Bay, how obvious. I bet Zuckerberg hired hackers to do this just to gain publicity for Facebook.

2010-07-29 10:59:26 AM
FTA: "Bowes used code to scan the 500 million Facebook profiles for information not hidden by privacy settings."

He used code. That must mean hackers did this, right?

2010-07-29 10:59:42 AM
FTFA: "As I thought more about it and talked to other people, I realized that this is a scary privacy issue. I can find the name of pretty much every person on Facebook," he wrote.

Know how I know you need to get a life?

2010-07-29 11:01:10 AM
krysbabe: and this is why we should turn off public search, lock down your account.. make everything private and don't use stupid ass appz...

FTA: Bowes' actions also mean people who had set their privacy settings so their names did not appear in Facebook's search system can now be found if they were friends with anyone whose name was searchable.

2010-07-29 11:01:16 AM
Stoner Mike: The only people deserving of the FAIL tag are those who are pissed that thier information is included in this file. Maybe you should have paid attention to what boxes you were checking or left unchecked.

What about the friends of those idiots? Apparently you can see the idiot's friends list and access their profiles.

2010-07-29 11:01:22 AM
3 gigs? if i wait until i get home, will it be taken down by then? one wonders?

2010-07-29 11:01:36 AM
In other news, Google HACKED THE ENTIRE WEB and put it all up in a convenient searchable index on their site! Shut them down now!

Yes, this is exactly like that, but only with facebook. They just crawled the profiles include the option to be listed in searches.

2010-07-29 11:01:50 AM
How is this hacking if it's publicly available information?

2010-07-29 11:01:56 AM
The Internet is a neat public thing.

2010-07-29 11:02:14 AM
its vs it's

2010-07-29 11:03:00 AM
Has anyone said anything that it wasn't hacked but mined?

2010-07-29 11:03:04 AM
I just hacked Fark by reading these posts.

Subby is fail.

2010-07-29 11:03:54 AM
For those of you that keep your Facebook profile private, apparently TFA states that if any of your friends have public profiles, at the very least your name and picture will appear in their friends list. So even if they don't get your personal information, your name and photo can still be archived, and possibly even your location can be gleaned if enough of your friends in the immediate area have public profiles.

2010-07-29 11:04:25 AM
Spoiler: It's a torrent

That means that even people who watch that segment, go to the site and find the file, if they didn't already know how to get at that stuff, won't be able to

L2Read. You can't access their profile if it's hidden. You can see the name, possibly a profile pic. So what? People now know my wife has a facebook page that is locked down, cause this guy found her and they can't?

The only thing to come out of this will be if he logged all public photos, and we get to see some drunk hot chicks. That's really the only reason to do this. Or hot dudes I guess if that's your thing.

stainedglassdoll: So even if they don't get your personal information, your name and photo can still be archived

Assuming it's not a picture of a squirrel with big nuts or a lolcat.

2010-07-29 11:06:50 AM
Am I important yet?

2010-07-29 11:07:33 AM
This is like the time I called the phone company to stop having my number published in the phone book. They were happy to oblige, but they said there was nothing they could do about my number already being published in previous years.

Bastards.

2010-07-29 11:09:18 AM
Take THAT, Wikileaks!

2010-07-29 11:09:42 AM
How long does it take to search through 100 million users in an unindexed file anyway?

So if I put something on the internet, someone may capture and save it? Damn, who knew?

2010-07-29 11:10:29 AM
I'm hacking in my pants right now.

/Mining in my pants sounded too naughty. NTTAWWT.

PsyLord: What about the friends of those idiots? Apparently you can see the idiot's friends list and access their profiles.

Then the idiots were still idiots for leaving their privacy settings too open.

2010-07-29 11:11:26 AM
Who keeps any information on facebook that matters or isn't avaliable in a phonebook?

Ajanu: The only thing to come out of this will be if he logged all public photos, and we get to see some drunk hot chicks. That's really the only reason to do this. Or hot dudes I guess if that's your thing.

No joke. Let's break this down, folks: some people simply do not care that strangers see what's on their page. A recent story on NPR had a reporter doing a search of status updates that read "My new number is" and started randomly calling chicks.

Guess what? None of them cared. OOGIE BOOGIE!

Those jerks should issue retrocative phonebook updates!

Still love it.

FTA: "If the user has set their privacy higher, at the very least I can view their name and picture. So, if any searchable user has friends that are non-searchable, those friends just opted into being searched, like it or not! Oops :)"

what is he, 10? Besides, I use Facebook pretty regularly, and that is a conclusion you could've drawn on your own, before all this. That's not new. I don't get it.

2010-07-29 11:13:54 AM
OH look! it also has the website for the security guy's web security business. Now that he's exposed all this publicly available information he'll gladly help you protect yourself on the web....for a nominal fee.

/THANKS MSNBC for that hard-hitting newspiece that totally wasn't a thinly disguised advertisement for this guys business.

krysbabe: and this is why you we should turn off public search, lock down your account.. make everything private and don't use stupid ass appz... shouldn't use facebook in the first place

FTFY

But, but, but, I didn't want all those pictures of me drunk while holding a can of Busch Light back in high school to be made public! I thought only my friends could see them!

At the very least, they could have assisted me in my efforts while I went door to door for months, asking residents to give me their old phone books.

2010-07-29 11:16:45 AM
you mean, if I put something on the internet and make it publicly available, I can't take it down later? I'm shocked!!

stainedglassdoll: So even if they don't get your personal information, your name and photo can still be archived,

Oh what ever shall we do!? Woe and agony, someone is writing down our NAMES!

Oh Noes!!!
THe phone book hacked my address and number!!!!

Well, *I* personally don't think it's a big deal. I just mentioned it out there for people that *would* care, like someone named, say, Benjamin Nushmutt.

i am not a bookfacer so your hackings do not scrunch up my chonies. HA HA.
