"It's" (times 2!) and "your" fail in the same headline? Riles me up enough to come in here and comment, but turns me off so much that I won't read the article.

As much as I often think "cops are mostly abusive assholes"... man I would HATE to be one of the officers on the child porn/exploitation beat. You just know they've seen things so awful that most of us would want to curl up in a corner with a bottle of scotch and stay there... and they have to keep seeing them, or their jobs won't get done. Jeez.

I don't know, how much are these kids worth? You can get good money for a healthy baby. The depreciate quickly after about 18 months though.

2010-07-29 11:25:41 AM
So long as they are required to enforce the laws we elect officials to write, this makes sense. I imagine there is a lot more drug trafficking than child trafficking, and the drug trafficking is likely far more related to violent crime in the district. I bet their animal abuse unit is pretty small too.

/thinks all drugs should be legalized/ controlled.

Pretty much this. Police Dept's are a business. They must turn revenue for the city, or their management will be fired until someone who can turn a profit is found.

Taking down non-violent drug "offenders" is probably a lot easier. You don't expect the fat farks in police departments to work harder than their quotas demand, do you?

dj_bigbird: Which unit produces more $ in terms of asset forfeiture?

Yeah, there's that. Also, the whole "child sex trafficking" thang is really way over-exagerated. It's not like there's huge International child-sex rings operating out of freakin' Portland. Chances are, they nab the occasional 17 year old Craigslist hooker and call it child sex trafficking. Y'know. For the children.

"Portland doing it is best... with it is 2 vice cops... Your doing it wrong."

Parsing that sentence makes my head asplode.

That said, while I'm sure there's a grain of truth to the story (and modern-day slavery/trafficking is the Lex Luthor to my Superman), count on the Moonie Times to cast aspersions on a town with as liberal a reputation as Portland. Sure, it's a streetpunk mecca -- scabies-infested "crusties" sitting on curbs panhandling for beer with funny signs. Some of those kids escaped from comfortable middle-class existences with parents who were also mentally and physically abusive. It's tough to paint the lot with one broad stroke, but I'm sure the Moonie Times is up to the task, as well are a number of you Farkers out there.

TheTeethoftheTiger: and the drug trafficking is likely far more related to violent crime in the district

I'd be way more concerned with child sex trafficking and the violence and abuse inherent in that than drug dealers killing drug dealers. Sure, I don't want either, but which is really more harmful?

This. Busting pervs isn't as lucrative as busting grow operations and smugglers. Doing something about real crime costs money, has a shiatty ROI.
