Beer has a lot of silicon in it, which is good for bone density.

Cheers!

Are people really defending this drunken pact???

The influence of alcohol (aka A DRUG) is horrific and will lead to death, insanity and jail. If this were to actually happen, the recipient would most likely sucumb to the horrors of alcoholism.

I most surely hope all of them get to a meeting, find a sponsor, read their big book and work their steps so they can get to a meeting, find a sponsor, read their big book and work their steps so they can get to a meeting, find a sponsor, read their big book and work their steps....

Did it save a life?

That's probably why some poeple are defending his drunken pact.

So, if while piss drunk, I agree to do something good, and then a little ways down the line, I'm reminded...

*shrug*

This guy sounds like the kinda guy that would have done it upon first being asked. Kudos to him.

It wasn't the beer; 'twas the man's honour what saved the day.

/doesn't mean beer isn't the greatest substance in the world

Bone Marrow donation is actually pretty easy these days, as is getting on the list. All they have to do is take a swab from the inside of your cheek, and that gives them enough info to put you on the list.

Though I haven't donated, I was contacted as a potentially viable donor (which meant they wanted me to get bloodwork done), so I looked up what, exactly, might be in store for me if I were a match-

Instead of the "We're going to stick a GIANT NEEDLE into you and take a chunk of bone marrow out of your hip" procedure, these days they use-I'm not sure what it was, some sort of drug that helps brings some marrow to the 'surface' temporarily, then you get hooked up to a machine for a few hours while they cycle it out. So like donating platelets, I guess.

I guess I'm just trying to encourage people to get on the list. =)

It wasn't a friend he drunkenly donated to, it was a bank, and it saved a STRANGER's life...

/and you thought impressing the bartender with a tip was generous...

Cool story, terribly written article. I think all parties involved were too drunk to make this a coherent feel-good story. Cheers!

FTA:"What do you say to someone who saved your life?," Wellman replied when asked at the Russell House Pub last Saturday how one expresses thanks for such generosity.

I don't know, how about "Drinks on me" or "Here's a box of (insert favorite liquor here*) handles" followed by thanks for giving me your bone marrow.

Pretty easy these days... this dude donated 20 years ago, when they used a cork screw and garden spade..

xanadian: Beer. Is there nothing it can't do?

Beer can be evil as well:

Many females use a date-drug on the market called 'Beer'.

The drug is found in liquid form and is available anywhere.
it comes in bottles, cans, or from taps and in large kegs.

Beer is used by female sexual predators at parties and bars to persuade their male victims to go home and sleep with them.

A woman needs only to get a guy to consume a few units of Beer and then simply ask him home for no-strings-attached sex.

Men are rendered helpless against this approach. After several Beers, men will often succumb to the desires to sleep with horrific looking women to whom they would never normally be attracted.

After drinking Beer, men often awaken with only hazy memories of exactly what happened to them the night before, often with just a vague feeling that 'something bad' occurred.

At other times these unfortunate men are swindled out of their life's savings, in a familiar scam known as 'a relationship' . In extreme cases, the female may even be shrewd enough to entrap the unsuspecting male into a longer-term form of servitude and punishment referred to as 'marriage'.

Men are much more susceptible to this scam after Beer is administered and sex is offered by the predatory females.

If you fall victim to this 'Beer' scam and the women administering it, there are male support groups where you can discuss the details of your shocking encounter with similarly victimized men.

For the support group nearest you, just look up 'Golf Courses' in the phone book.

It's a good thing to do, to sign up for bone marrow donation. One of my friends needed marrow, had a marrow drive, and got a bunch of people signed up.

/had to take myself off. they don't like your marrow after you have leukemia yourself :/

It makes life more interesting too. I've gotten to do some really interesting shiat because of what should be every drunk's favorite phrases: "No, I don't have any plans next (insert day here)" and "Sounds like a great idea!"

And good on you for that! The procedure is called "peripheral blood stem cell donation" or PBSC... if you are found to be a match for someone and pass all the screening, your bone marrow is stimulated with a drug called filgrastim which stimulates your bone marrow stem cells to divide and when they do, they mobilize into your blood circulation. So after several days of prep, you have enough circulating stem cells that they can be separated off in a process called apheresis - essentially the very same way that platelet donations (or double red cell donations) are performed. A continuous flow centrifuge is used to separate off the stem cells and the bulk of the red blood cells and plasma are returned to you. This can take 6-8 hours, but while you're connected to the machine you can eat, drink, watch tv, work on your laptop, whatever. I've had the privilege to work in a place where the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) does stem cell collections and it is a really amazing way to literally save someone's life.

So seriously considering joining the NMDP registry. It is easy to join and the chance you will be called to donate is very remote, yet the impact if you do is amazing. More info at the NMDP's website. (new window)

Be the match!

The artist has recovered and experiences only occasional mild symptoms of her body's natural tendency to want to reject the foreign marrow.

almost 100% compatible, then

I think the problem would be the foreign marrow's natural tendency to reject the rest of her body.

Good for him for keeping his promise.
My sister in law died this past May from leukemia. She had a donor but sadly, was too ill to receive it.

He didn't promise his marrow to a friend. He signed up to be a donor after a visit to the ER necessitated by a drunken brawl. He befriended the woman a year after the donation. Doesn't anyone RTFA?
