God is constantly working in the world, showing us He is there, and people still deny it. Miracles are happening all around us. Would you really go up to this family and tell them that God wasn't there that day, watching over them? I have several friends who have been witnesses to extraordinary acts that defy explanation, and I tell them all that God is there with them always. One woman I said this to had tears in her eyes, she couldn't believe it, that God is there looking after her from above, because she had never known such love in her life. She opened her eyes, and she let a light she had never seen before come in. She is a testament to miracles, just as this girl is.

I was sitting at the breakfast table with my roommate reading the morning paper when she asked very inquisitively, "what part of the body is the fracas?". I said huh? She said she was reading a story about a riot and about how a girl was injured in the fracas. After I stopped laughing and explained she realized she hadn't yet had enough coffee.

So survive some tragedy by a seemingly random fluke of chance and it's a miracle which shows god is looking out for you on a personal level. Die in a terrible tragedy and, well that's just plain ol' bad luck.

If god has a plan for each of and every one of us then his plan to have 16000 children die of hunger each and every day sucks ass. But hey, when I survived that motorcycle accident last year it's because god loves me and blessed me with a miracle and I'm part of his important plan. Maybe those 16000 children should stop being so poor and brown and be awesome like me and god will throw a few miracles their way too.

If god wants to impress me with miracles he can stop with putting his kid's pictures on common everyday objects and other events of random chance and make with the heavenly farking manna falling from the skies to feed the starving. He starts delivering miracles like that and then I'll be impressed.

Yeah, and he's a doing a bang up job! It farking pisses me off when I hear people spew this ignorant shiat, God was working when the girl didn't die from being shot, but he was behind the wood pile jacking off when the actual bullets were being fired? It is always a "miracle" when a team of highly trained competent doctors and nurses struggle to save a life, that's God's work. When the bad thing happened to the poor bastard, God was no where in sight. Hey, if you want to show a miracle, have God pop up and Matrix the bullets BEFORE they hit the little girl.

It's called free will and does not invalidate the belief that God had some responsibility for the little girls survival.

It is always a "miracle" when a team of highly trained competent doctors and nurses struggle to save a life, that's God's work.

Believers tend to give credit to God for having a hand in helping to create that team of competent doctors and nurses. From inspiration in developing medical technology to inspirations throughout each of those persons lives that lead them to be at that place, at that time.

When the bad thing happened to the poor bastard, God was no where in sight. Hey, if you want to show a miracle, have God pop up and Matrix the bullets BEFORE they hit the little girl.

To build a fire to warm yourself in winter, you need to burn some wood. I doubt the wood understands why it's being torched, but if after surviving a cold night, you later end up planting far more tree's than were harmed in your fire, was it not a worthy sacrifice of the initial wood? Believing that God is here to make our lives nothing but fluff and comfort completely miss the point, imho. The idea of believing in a "Gods Plan" presupposes you understand the fact that we will never truly understand it. That's how believers get comfort from the belief.

All that being said +1 for the headline!

Summarized anecdote I heard:

A poor man comes out onto the porch every day and says, "Dear God, please save my family from hunger. All of my money goes to paying for this house." Every day, his atheist neighbor yells over, "You're a fool! There is no God!"

One day, as the man comes out to pray, he sees several bags of groceries lying there. He says, "Thank you God for providing for my family. I knew you'd hear my prayers." At that point, the atheist neighbor jumps out and says, "Ha! I bought those groceries! There is no God!"

The poor man then says, "Dear God, thank you for not only providing for my family, but getting the atheist to pay for it!"

Moral of the story: Perception is reality

What if God is malicious? What if the Third Reich was God's plan, and in stopping it we were working against him? Can you tell me for sure that that's not the case?

This is the point. That what we credit to God and what we credit to bad luck or free will is pretty arbitrary, and strongly suggests a desire to support a predisposition rather than empirical observation.

If? The guy who throws a hissy fit because he forgets to tell the first two folks he created not to listen to any talking snakes, then punishes not just them but every human afterward? The guy who throws another tantrum a bit later and floods the entire world, killing everything but the people and animals ensconced on a boat? The guy who had his own son tortured so that he could change a rule he made up in the first place? The guy who'll send you to an eternity of torment if you don't love him enough and follow a bunch of arbitrary rules about coveting and graven images? The guy who has an assholish plan to end the Earth in fire and destruction and torment, and like a douchey Bond villain just goes ahead and spills the entire plan in an unnecessarily long and overly dramatic explanation?

If he's malicious?

/Just kidding. There is no god.

god, or the idea of god, is manmade. All religious texts were written, accepted, sanctified, and interpreted by man, so if there IS a god, there's no guarentee of our knowing its nature, even mortality. And don't give me this "the writers were inspired by god" b.s. just cause I am inspired to paint a sunset doesn't mean the sunset I paint is real, or a real representation of the original. Its almost like painting something that isn't there, then believing the painting is the truth.

/decidedly agnostic

God sat on his ass and watched this girls cousin get shot. Then he sat on his ass and did nothing while these assholes planned a drive-by. He could have made there car crash. He could have made there guns jam. He could have infused an overwhelming sense of compassion into the shooters mind so he wouldn't feel like doing it anymore. But no, he let the whole thing happen, and you are giving him props for just moving the bullets a couple inches over so she would go into intensive care instead of dying right there in her front yard. I consider good things that happen when normally they shouldn't a possible act of God or miracle. I do not believe things like the Third Reich are a part of God's plan, but who is to say that he can not use a bad thing for some future good?

My belief is that we all have the ability to choose to do good or bad and God allows that to be so. I do not pretend to know the mind of God in all things so I dont go around saying everything was an act of God, but here's a question, how many things do we take for granted today and consider non miracles were things that maybe god provided the insight for use to use? Why do we only suspect God in action only when the highly improbably occurs?

If god be with us, who could be against us?

It's funny, how people will bend into all sorts of bizarre contortions to credit the magical sky daddy with things that require human effort, talent and acumen. Then they accuse anyone who points this out to them as being "secular humanists" and threaten to burn their houses down and exterminate their children.

Religionists, rationalizing schizophrenia and sociopathy in primitive myth since noodles knows when.

Humans will not mature as an intelligent, sentient species until we can regale such stone age belief systems to the dark cesspits of history and academia.

I'm glad that the little girl will survive, but bear in mind the adults in her household have a long way to go toward becoming adults.

And if the girl had died, they'd say "God took her to be in his kingdom of heaven".

Man I can't stand ignorant brain-washed people.

I know a couple who were really great people. Very kind, loving people. They were married and tried to have a baby. 8 months into the pregnancy she had a miscarriage, well they had to deliver her and she died in their arms to be specific, because they were catholic and the baby was old enough to be considered "alive" they had to have a full blown funeral. Of course the priest said "God took this angel to be with him in the kingdom of heaven"? Why?? How could a loving, caring God take a baby from two good people? WTF???

So God takes babies, and helps football teams win games and lets people get shot, almost die in car and other accidents, and though he didn't prevent the accident from happening, he did intervine to "save them" because he has a plan for them. Did that plan include having to suffer the pain of a near death experience?
