Saw RUSH on July 5th in Chicago. Geddy sounded awesome! The show was incredible too. After work I will break out my 5 string and crank out a few tunes until my fingers hurt! Actually, that will only take about 5 minutes as I'm way out of practice on the bass.

Happy Birthday, Geddy!

Everything that was ever wrong with popular music. Right there. In one band.
Do people actually enjoy Rush? I mean in a non-ironic way? Everything is bad - from the songs, to the ridiculous "look how clever I am" playing, to the hair. And don't get me started on the lyrics.

It's been since the Signals tour that I have seen Rush. A damn fine show by three very talented individuals. Happy Birthday Geddy!

Over 30 years with the same members, 3rd in gold/platinum albums, behind only the Beatles and Stones, sold out tours all over the world, yeah, nobody likes them.

Shut up, toolbox. Their...hair? Really? Their hair isn't cool enough for you to shut up and listen for more than four seconds?

The old-school rock guys could actually play their instruments. Somewhere along the line, we allowed jealous, resentful no-talent shmucks like you convince us that THE "OMG THE FEELING IT'S NOT RAW ENOUGH AND THEY ARE PRETENTIOUS JERKS WHO ACTUALLY TUNE THEIR GUITARS! KURT COBAIN IS BETTER THAN MOZART!"- aesthetic was the one to judge all music by.

Go jump in a car-crusher at a scrapyard, and take your Lou Reed LPs with you, you gaywad.

I think RUSH is good, just not great.

I totally understand why people like them, and I understand the flip-side. To be great you really need a body of work with only a miss or two at the most. RUSH has some incredible stuff, but there is a large pile of stuff that is just VERY bad. Had their bad stuff just been meh, I could give them a pass to the "great" category. The problem is, for every good album, there is an equally sucky album. (see Test for Echo)

Happy Birthday Geddy! Said it before, I'll say it again. Personally glad they're not everyone's cup o' tea. Helps me sort out who's who. Plus I think they sustain themselves on the negative energy from the haters. See Fark, Rn'R HOF.

So bad that they are 3rd on the list of most consecutive platinum & gold albums of all time, only behind such terrible bands as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. I dunno about anyone else, but as a musician, I wish I could get it that wrong that consistently.

Whatever you may think of Rush, one thing is a fact no sane person can deny: Those guys are all masters of their respective instruments.

I might also add the first time my wife saw a video of Rush playing live on TV, she said something to the effect of "That old woman can really play the bass!"

Never compare Dream Theater to Rush.

Rush actually has a personality and presence. Dream Theater are dull and faceless, which is why their audience consists totally of geeks.

Because, they can play, they just don't play anything interesting.

A couple years ago at a Milwaukee Rush show, there was a hottie standing next to the wife and me right up front, and at the end of the show, Alex bent down and handed her a pick.

My wife might actually be a bigger Rush fan than me, although I like almost all of their work, save some of the later 80s stuff (see: HYF).

Dream Theater wouldn't be so bad if they understood that less is more, as Rush did early in their careers. DT are the masters of shredding and wankery. The vocalist is overly dramatic and does his best to hit those American Idol approved sustained high notes on every song.

Dislike of Rush means dislike of Neil Peart, which is already blasphemous on several levels. Maybe you don't enjoy the lyrics, and maybe you don't enjoy Geddy's voice, but, dammit, you can't not like Neil Peart.

Vangor: Maybe you don't enjoy the lyrics, and maybe you don't enjoy Geddy's voice, but, dammit, you can't not like Neil Peart.

I don't like Neil Peart.

His playing style is flashy and compelling in a specific way that appeals to dope-smoking 10th graders who have just convinced their parents to buy them a drum kit. With just a couple of years of practicing, anybody could play his recorded parts verbatim; and they, like he himself, usually do.

His attempts to perform outside his usual style -- on "Burning for Buddy" in particular -- is mechanical and lifeless.

The best things you can say about his tedious drum solos are that the electronic gimmickry is somewhat novel, and that at least he doesn't go quite as far overboard with the gear fetishism as his disciple/clone Mike Portnoy.

And his lyrics. Oh god, his lyrics.

Rush has a good thing going for themselves, but it's not my kind of thing.

Doesn't Peart write the songs?

I like Rush a lot. Dragonhead did a good job of breaking some new ground in his otherwise predictable troll in this thread. "Pop music?" Brilliant dig.

The bass tone on this performance of Limelight sounded completely nasty :)

There's plenty of musicians who aren't drummers who would like to punch Neil Peart in the balls, due to having to deal with dozens or hundreds of wannabe Peart and Mike Portnoy clones who think a song sucks unless it's in 16/32 time or something and they can't wank all over it, before finding one drummer who will actually LISTEN to the rest of the band and play the damn song.

A side note: there is no merit to such argument. Good music isn't always difficult (though Beethoven's Große Fuge is a neat-o exception). Difficult music isn't always good.

Dear Geddy:

Happy birthday. I love you and I love Rush. I hope you have a wonderful birthday.

That being said, I must say this:

Thanks for scheduling your only concert remotely near me in the shiattiest venue ever (Jiffy Lube Amphitheater in Manassas VA, where 25,000 people have to get in and out via a three-mile-long ONE LANE ROAD) on the tour where you do my favorite album in its entirety. Not only that, but it's on the night I have to do time with the in-laws in Virginia Beach to celebrate the metric farkton of family members with September birthdays. Just because I love you doesn't mean you, Lerxst and the Professor aren't on my personal shiat list for this.

I'll get over it but still, dudes, not cool
Marisyana

/unfortunately I have one of the September b-days so I have to go
//I better get lots of money and booze for this supreme sacrifice
///still, happy birthday, Gedster
