(The New York Times)   2010 is going to be the hottest year on record since record-keeping began in 1880. The current top 10: 2005, 2007, 2009, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2004, 2001 and 2008. But hey, it snowed last winter, so don't worry   (nytimes.com ) divider line

Global warming.

Imagine there's this party going on. Everyone's eating, drinking, and being merry. Pizza boxes, rib bones, beer cans, wine bottles, and other detritus are strewn everywhere. But you haven't even heard about the party yet. You're not even around yet.

So this party goes on for about a century. And when you finally show up and grab a slice, the music stops. Everyone turns around, points at you, and says, "how can you eat that pizza? Don't you realize it's killing our house?" And now, even though they messed up the place, they're charging you with cleaning it up.

And if you don't clean it up (because they're sure as hell not going to), the house will be condemned and torn down, and nobody will be able to live there ever again.

And you're not supposed to feel even the slightest bit of resentment toward the people who started the party? Not even a hint?

Can someone please explain to me why global warming is bad. I understand that some weather patterns will change and the sea levels may or may not increase or decrease but why is it a problem. The temperature has changed constantly since we have been inhabitants on this blue ball and we have always adjusted. Why can we adjust to whatever is going to happen. Its not like it will happen overnight.

Call me silly but I just don't see why there is a knee jerk reaction to stop it, if that is even possible.

This is only a "problem" for people gullible enough to believe liberal thermometers. I mean, it's mercury, for crying out loud -- one of the most Democrat elements in the entire periodic table. Even its symbol -- HG -- stands for "Hussein Gobama". What I'm really trying to say is that people should just think for themselves every once in a while.

When I was a kid, we were shocked when the Cuyahoga River caught fire. As in caught fire. You know, like combustion. A river. On fire.

Turns out that was the thirteenth time it caught fire.

This was back when everything in downtown Pittsburgh was jet black with carbon. We rode around unrestrained in land-yachts that had metal interiors, and when we were in wrecks, we were turned into hamburger. The plastics all contained polycarbonated biphenyls, and cars ran on hexane laced with tetraethyl lead. Mmmmm, the sweet smell of benzopyrene!

You inherit the world you inherit. You no more ask for this than you choose your parents.

I think the easiest way to explain it without going all biological would be to say the global average difference between now and the ice age is something like 5 degrees Celcius.

Actually, relatively speaking, the climate has been pretty stable since the end of the last ice age (over 10,000 years) which has allowed humanity to evolve into an advanced, civilized species.

There are tremendous agricultural consequences of hot places becoming hotter and cold places becoming less warm. Right now the US is the breadbasket of the world, in a few decades that all goes to shiat and Canada becomes the breadbasket of the world.

You okay with that?

It's not the end of the world or even the end of humanity, very little is. But there will be at the least very significant, at the worst world-changing impact.

This is just all part of the natural temperature cycles of the earth that have been going on since the planet was created from nothing 5000 years ago. We shouldn't worry about it or do anything to prevent it from getting worse...

/I feel dirty after typing that.

Using ground based temperatures that are poorly sited, heavily adjusted, and use lots of interpolation to fill in missing gaps? Yes. It will probably be the hottest year on record.

Using temperature measurements from satellite data that don't suffer from these problems? No, it will not be the hottest year on record. The El Nino this year was strong, but not as strong as in 1998.

So, this data cannot be telling us that human-caused global warming is happening.

But I'm going to guess that you're certain it can be telling us that it is not.

Did I get that right?

But only after applying an arbitrary post-hoc homogenization calibration to the data, as usual.

Forget about global warming. Forget all the arguments from either side. Just ask yourself one question...Should we increase or decrease the amount of smog and smoke and junk we spew into our environment?

It's kind of like those people who claim they didn't know smoking was bad for them. When you took your first drag, didn't you cough and gag...maybe that should have been a warning it isn't good. Now do you want to live next to a coal plant, or stick your face in front of a tailpipe. Of course not, so why would we want to dump that into our athmosphere.

I seem to remember a survey showing a huge percentage of NOAA's temperature sensors are located near heat-producing objects like AC compressors.

I know there is a lot more data supporting significant and anomolous climate change out there, but:

Suppose Earth has mini climate cycles, with a period of 400 years (i.e the pattern repeats every four centuries). Suppose also that, in 1880, the Earth was almost half way between the minimum and the maximum, on the increasing side of the hump. Right now we'd be at the maximum, but in 30 years it'll be like it was in the 70's, and it'll continue to get colder for the next 200 years.

Again, I know there is more data out there, but my point is: don't fall for cherry picked data. Without any other context, the fact that the last 10 years are the hottest on record doesn't mean diddly squat.

2010-07-28 06:30:16 PM

devilskware: Wow. A whole 130 years of inaccurate measurements. That's like, 15% of the time earth has existed.

And in that time we've managed to release most of the carbon stored over the last hundred-million years or so. You know...FOSSIL fuels. Then burned most of them. Wonder what happens to the global temperature when things like that happen. Like, if the arctic permafrost started melting and releasing sh*t-tons of methane into our CLOSED atmosphere.

/Denier mentality: When new deserts form and the oceans cover what the earthquakes left behind, at least we can say "It's not our fault."
//Right?

mongbiohazard: Yeah, and there is absolutely nothing else which could explain it. Nothing at all... no siree...

That entire article bases its slant on their thought that every weather thermometer is improperly placed, or every last piece of weather equipment is mishandled. It's generalizing by going with a few pieces of anecdotal evidence-- and such that is sketchy at best.

But, no! Picturing gear that belongs to amateurs and then decrying the evidence with years of research behind it sure is an appropriate answer!
