(The New York Times)   It turns out only about half of NYC's school kids are proficient in math, rather than the 80 percent previously reported. If only there was some academic subject to assist in these kinds of calculations   (nytimes.com) divider line 34

There are three kinds of people in this world; those good with numbers and those that aren't.

Michael R. Bloomberg boasted that more that more than two-thirds of city's students were reading at grade level.

You're boasting that 1/3 of your students aren't reading at grade level?! The good thing is that 2/3 of the students are reading at the appropriate level for their age?

Why do they need to be good at math when all that is required of them to work at McDonalds is to touch the pictures on the screen like they do in Idiocracy?

That would be the Hospital where they touch the screens. The fast food restaurants are all vending machines.

hey, we're bad at math. but since we are, when we calculate how good at math we are we come up with impressive results.

The sad thing is that they had to seriously dumb down the math curriculum to get that 50%. If they used math text books from the 1950s they probably couldn't get 10%.

Goddammit, a farking monkey can do basic algebra, stop using calculators as a crutch when you teach math and find somebody who didn't become a teacher solely to become a highschool baseball coach to teach the class and maybe the kids will actually learn something.

Christ, if you're lazy and stupid teaching how can you expect the kids to be different.

Not true.

I'm really bad at math 'cause I thought 50% was half....and damn it I guess under this new math it is 61%.... "This year, only 61 percent of students were deemed to be at grade level in math, compared with 86 last year."

exactly why my son attends the Harlem Success Academy.

one of the biggest problems of the nyc public school is that the parents arent involved in their children's education and dont assist them with homework or any type of at home learning. the parents hold their children back from succeeding and those students hold the rest of the class back from being able to move past the basics.

oftentimes because they (the parents) dont speak english.

Did someone say NEW MATH?!

You can't take three from two,
Two is less than three,
So you look at the four in the eights place.
Now that's really four eights,
So you make it three eights,
Regroup, and you change an eight to eight ones,
And you add them to the two,
and you get one-two base eight,
Which is ten base ten,
And you take away three, that's seven.

Now instead of four in the eights place
You've got three,
'Cause you added one,
That is to say, eight, to the two,
But you can't take seven from three,
So you look at the sixty-fours.

Then you have the elite NYC public schools like Stuyvesant or Bronx Science where the students are whizzes in math/science.

as well as thousands of dollars in principal and teacher bonuses.

That's what's wrong with the system. The assholes are getting a bonus for doing their jobs right. How about if you don't do your job right you don't get paid the full amount. That would be the right way to run the district. That's how most peoples jobs work.

"The 3-legged stool of understanding is held up by history, languages, and mathematics. Equipped with these three you can learn anything you want to learn. But if you lack any one of them you are just another ignorant peasant with dung on your boots."

Meanwhile, NY schools have been holding up their stool of understanding with nurturing, diversity and self-esteem.

And possibly a butt-plug.

Practically speaking, the percentage advantage is exactly the same if you reward good people vs penalizing bad people. Except rewards make people feel happier. No, the reali problem is the soul-sucking bureacracy that stifles all innovation and drives most good teachers mad within a few years. Teacher's unions, just like any unions, are only there to serve the interests of their worst members, not their best, and schools are more interested in keeping things quiet than improving and potentially exposing past idiocy.

I say introduce school vouchers. If parents can choose who gets their money, schools will very quickly improve, since a good education will suddenly be the only thing that matters.

vouchers do nothing but admit the public system is failed, and takes resources and money away from it. It needs to and can be fixed. The problem is politics always gets in the way of doing it right. For starters pay teachers more to attract better talent. Then you have to have a society full of opportunities, rather than everyone fighting for a few good paying jobs. And finally you have to give more money to poor areas that don't get the same funding per capita
