Both M.I.A. and Oprah, seem a little butthurt.

2010-07-28 10:23:31 AM

Who cares? At least Lady Gaga does the shiat because she's nutters. I respect that.

MIA just sucks.

Never heard of M.I.A.
It's like she's missing in action from my radar

Most female musicians with an album just coming out go the "Oh, I'm bisexual" route. Some go with the frothing at the mouth anger route.

I like MIA.

Could it be that me and she are tighter than J-lo in her jeans?
And Could it be that me and she are tighter than R.Kelly in his teens?

I bet Oprah was terrified that MIA was going to boom boom boom and take her money.

2010-07-28 01:03:28 PM
That's weird. MIA is a mom so I thought she would love Lady Gaga and Oprah.

It's kind of apples and oranges, but I'll say this anyway.

Santigold > M.I.A.

That is all.

To quote Anthony Bourdain, "I cannot work with somebody who visibly enjoys Billy Joel".

I think she's a total whore. Farking mouthbreathing ass clown.

Someone needs to give her a curb job.

Meh. She's just jealous because everyone in the world has heard of Lady Gaga (even if they never wanted to).

Scottybobotty: I hope someone slaps the shiat out of MIA. She is a no talent whore who is prolly from Park Ridge, IL and was discovered giving handjobs and blowies in a back alley behind a hotel.

There is nothing real about her. She can't sing. She isn't a musician.

/hates pop music

Scottybobotty: Marquis de Sod: Is she still ridiculously pregnant?

She prolly got knocked up by her pimp. She's nothing but a whore.

Oh, nevermind

FFS, some lunatic played all 8 1/2 minutes of BabopbyeYa on the radio this morning. Who does that?

In a better world Sir Greendown and Mushrooms and Roses get heavy top-40 airplay.

I noticed that you said "MIA" only once. On other hand you said "whore" 3 times and "job" twice

To regurgitate what I said in yesterday's MIA thread:

So based on the thread I sought out "Paper Planes" last night to give it a whirl.

It was no "Born Free," that's for sure.*

Thing is, even though it was repetitive and the lyrics were god awful ("We pack and deliver like UPS trucks?" Really?), it was a little infectious, too. I can see how it caught on for her.

And she's really cute.

I'll take scummy rave ups like Born Free over it any day, but for what it was, didn't mind it at all.

*Prior to yesterday, I had only ever heard "Born Free," which I honestly though was farking awesome -- that fuzzy, ugly bassline and scummy beat kicked ass.

I think they should all do a performance art peice together. MIA can shoot them, Gaga can eat their souls, and Oprah will give them solid advice while handing out gifts as they scream in excitement. Beyonce will show up and shake her booty. Elen will tell bad jokes. Rosanne will eat fried chicken. Fireworks, lasers, smoke, screens, mirrors, and AxeCop!

She pretty much said "Lady Gaga ain't shiat" and you guys don't appreciate that? Fark is just about hate, I guess, aimed in any direction.

You weren't here for the MIA completely farking her performance last weekend? She's total fair game. We're like the democrats in DC, stabbing our allies in the back.

Fark is pretty split on Gaga. Lots of people here who otherwise wouldn't give a rat's ass about her music or her scene think she's the bee's knees.

MIA makes a great point though, that LG is a silver-spoon case whose career has been somewhat handed to her on a silver platter. Born on third base and everybody treats her like she hit a triple. That kind of thing is eeeeeasy to resent. I think her fashion and musical styles aren't so original but whatever. You like what you like.

Oprah's comment is pure horseshiat, so MIA is dead right to call her out and resent it.

Born on third base? A silver-spoon case? How so?

I mean, you do realize that M.I.A. is engaged to the son of Warner Music group's CEO, right? Not exactly seeing how this is the person to be calling out Gaga.

Born and raised on the Upper East Side and going to NYU generally counts as pretty well off.

FTFA:
"She [Oprah Winfrey] made this huge speech at the ball praising Lady Gaga and about how she [Lady Gaga] is helping Americans to be the best of themselves. There's millions of other Americans who represent that for me."

Well, then I'm glad Oprah went with the short list for her speach.

/Not a fan of Opra or MIA
//Excuse for a second line of slashies.

Her family did well, but I'm still not understanding how that translates to someone whose "career has been somewhat handed to her on a silver platter."

Marrying well is something else entirely different from being a silver-spoon case. Besides that, MIA got with her man well after she'd paid her dues in the biz -- she's no overnight sensation.

LG is, more or less, an overnight sensation.

Oh, I agree. If you're an artist you still have to make it regardless of wealth.

MIA is probably just frustrated as to why people think Gaga is some kind of brilliant visionary (or like Oprah, "helping" Americans) and expressing that in inappropriate ways.

CoonAce: Marrying well is something else entirely different from being a silver-spoon case. Besides that, MIA got with her man well after she'd paid her dues in the biz -- she's no overnight sensation.

Didn't claim she was an overnight sensation.

You still haven't answered the question. How is Gaga someone "whose career has been somewhat handed to her on a silver platter?"

I mean, so her family had some money. How does this translate into a gigantic global career as a pop singer?

2010-07-28 04:32:32 PM
LG put in her time in local clubs. Dues are paid.

She has the pipes to sing just about any style she wants. She has the talent. Look for videos of Stefani Germanotta. Girl can sing.

She chooses to use it in a way that appeals to few farkers. Yo La Tengo appeals to relatively few people world wide. What of it? i can't experience what you like about that band that is so indie that the drummer hasn't heard of it yet, or the band that's so metal it's losing a drummer every show. i can't share my experience of LG being metapop and having clever lyrics and a catchy tune. What of it? Let's pretend we aren't in junior high anymore.

That's swell. Overnight sensations happen. But have to say it again: You still haven't answered the question. Because this isn't an answer.

Yeah, I'm right there with her on that. I like Gaga just fine, but she isn't doing anything others haven't done before. A little Madonna, a little Bowie, a little Grace Jones and Cyndi Lauper, stir it up. Not visionary, just good marketing.

LG didn't pay her dues the way MIA did. That's why she resented Oprah's comment. The silver platter and the silver spoon are unrelated in this case. Get a grip, you're getting it mixed up. It's not all totally black and white, which is why I said 'somewhat' and 'more or less.' Context clues. Figures of speech.

CoonAce: Context clues. Figures of speech.

Right. Got it. "Talking out my arse."

Got to say, the idea of debating which glitzy pop star "paid her dues" is pretty farking hilarious. It's like your typical indie snob discussion, but with pampered, well-connected, gajillion selling pop stars instead.

2010-07-28 06:34:47 PM
"Which glitzy pop star paid her dues" is exactly what MIA was griping about. I don't give a damn about any of them, but I get where MIA is coming from, which is all I've been saying.

It is pretty farking hilarious, which is why it's on Fark.

There's actually a couple of people supporting MIA here? Say what you will about Gaga and Oprah (I know I say a lot about them, none of it positive), but MIA supports the LTTE, a known terrorist group, so to hell with her.
