First, an aggressive tiger, now overly aggressive bees. What extraordinarily aggressive animal will be next to attack humanity?!?!

Bee trifecta now in play?

/third one better bee good
//is shot in the head

1) The woman, who has bees to harvest honey, told firefighters she was tending to the queen when the colony of bees became disturbed and began attacking her.

I would be more than a bit concerned if I was this woman's neighbor.

2) She was unable to escape the swarm of bees using normal methods.

What the hell are "normal methods" for escaping swarms of bees? Would that be running? Or jumping in a pond using a reed as a snorkel?

3) I saw this in a parking lot of a grocery store a couple months ago and was quite confused:

And a high pressure garden hose is only mildly effective against a swarm of angry yellow jackets, too.

/trust me on this
//you'd think after 40+ stings I'd be some sort of superhero or somethin' by now

2010-07-28 03:49:51 AM
can safety say I've never been stung by yellow jackets. Wonder if they will feature her on discover channel, i see lots of bee stories on there.

Oh believe me, my fire hose is very useful against them. It shoots fire.

2010-07-28 03:52:29 AM
Throw a load of plain old dishsoap into the pumper's booster tank, set your hoses for a modified fog, and get after it. The soap coats the bees wings, makes them unable to fly. Regular water will just piss them off.

/Never did it myself, but my dad had a cool story about it, bro.
//assumes your engine has a booster tank. If not, yer screwed.

I quite like the double handed Raid© cans myself. Avoid the wasp and hornet brand, as it's just a solid stream... you want to envelope yourself in a cloud of toxic death when these nasty winged merchants of pain come calling... hate yellow jackets... hate them, I so hate them.

And yes, no yellow jackets were involved in the story... just sayin...

The soap tends to coat them so they can't breath so well too.. oil is probably better for that, but bees breath through their 'skin'... seal it up, and they suffocate. But it's hell dipping each one in a can of oil... hehe

I was gonna say a flamethrower would've been a better idea than using water, but your fire hose would probably do the job, too.

even better: a lighter and something flammable, but mild -- like Lysol. engine starting fluid or WD40 are nice, but too flammable.

it singes their wings almost instantaneously and makes them much easier to deal with.

Although is not well know, in south during the mid-sixties, there were many bee attacks during protests.

Police dogs were also know to prevent bee attacks.

I often wondered, why the fire hoses? It's also strange how the bees attacked certain people more than others.

Cant say for sure since I am at work at the moment. Since my job requires me to use a keyboard and mouse I'm pretty sure I'm not covered in stings.

But then the dogs get bees in their mouths. And the next time they bark they shoot bees at you.

(Surprised no one's mentioned this yet.) It sounds like they may have some killer bee a/k/a Africanized bee blood in them. I hope someone tests for this. It's disturbing how they keep moving further and further north. We're going to hear more stories like this. :-(

That's because it's un-PC to imply that there is anything wrong with African bees. But for the circumstances in which they are raised, Africanized bees would be upstanding, productive members of bee society. We really aren't allowed to blame their aggressive and frequently deadly behavior on their DNA.

When I was a kid providing slave labor my brother and I would get bored and use a bottle of water to poor down bee nests in the ground and then stomp on the bastards when they crawl up.

Sort of off-topic, but has anyone else noticed the lack of bees around? I'm not raving about the colony collapse disorder, which has been reported for years now. I'm talking about there are no bees outside. Anywhere. I work outside all day long, around plants, and this year, there are no farking bees. I've seen about 12 all summer.

Which part of Montana are you in? We have TONS of bees in our yard. All hornets though. We are kicking around the idea of raising honeybees just to get rid of all the damn hornets.

I have noticed more grasshoppers and almost no moths though this year.

But all the goddamned wasps! Jesus, it's never been this bad before. Or maybe that's just down here (Florida). I keep a can of wasp killer spray handy most times when I'm out in my yard.
