Yet don't blame the QB who hung his receiver out to dry? Nice homerism...There were two immutable NFL laws in the 70's: you didn't run on Pittsburgh's front 7 and you didn't throw near either Oakland safety.

No game is meaningless; preseason is the time to scout formations and rosters. The Raiders also intimidated people; that was their job. They were far from the only ones. Ever see Mel Blount slam Cliff Branch on his head? Yet he's never accused of playing dirty.

I should save a collection of these posts for every time a thread goes off on how classless Raiders fans are.

Tatum did what he got paid to do, and someone got hurt. Ergo, the NFL ended up changing the rules because they decided they didn't want people getting hurt in that manner. Go a little overboard cause it was only a preseason game. Probably. But in the context of the NFL at the time, he did nothing wrong.

Let me see if i understand your football morals.

In the preseason you can bruise a receiver but you can only break minor bones, buteven that is a little too butch.

Early regular season you can break mahor bones but only if he is asking for it.

Late season fighting to get into the playoffs and a receiver tries crossing over the middle you can paralyze the guy. But leave him movement above the waist and show some concern or even remorse. Act like youve been here before.

Wildcard playoffs. OH SNAP goes that neck. Walk away from the body and find out who is replacing the guy. Pay attention to detail your team depends on you to play smart.

Late round playoffs: After you break his neck stand over him for just a little too long and glare at their other receivers. That will give you a slight edge if they are weak minded. Get every edge you can.

Super Bowl. HIT HIM IN THE FARKING NECK AND USE LEVERAGE After you do a victory dance be sure to kick his limp carcass one last time. Running into the stands and getting in his Moms face is OK. Pissing on her is over the line though.

I think it's kind of cool actually. Ever since JaMarcus rolled away the Raider Haters have started to get restless and chatter again. There is just a hin of uncertainty and restlessness there now. That hate and fear right there, that is real respect. The Raiders have been hammered crap since that Tampa game against Gruden and yet the first twitch of life the Raiders show after all these years the haters start howling. That is respect you cant fake or buy. It is 100X more real than any NFL rankings are. More real than 10 million Raider hats and jerseys worn during a good season.

R.I.P. Jack Tatum. Even now that your body is only so much dust, your name still makes the Raider Haters squawk and chatter. The Raider nation could ask no more of a Raider than that.

Hyperbole much? I figure that is your strength because your mind-reading of my 'football morals' needs a bit of work.

While driving your helmet into the spine of a defenseless player may have been legal at that time, it was morally reprehensible given that Tatum had no incentive to do it - it was a farking preseason game. I'm surprised that Madden didn't give him shiat (though he may have), because Tatum could have just as easily broke his own neck attempting his "intimidating" hit on Stingley or risked another type of season-ending injury in a preseason game.

Tatum was a hired goon, an admitted "assassin" of NFL receivers, and showed no remorse for years (if even that, he had a book to promote after all). Sorry to piss on your hero, but excuse me for not giving two shiats about your "assassin" idol who took pleasure in hurting people because it fit with his image.

Satire actually. It's hilarious to consider goofball notions like It is worse to paralyze a man in preseason than it is to paralyzing a man during the regular season due to the relative importance of the games. and project them out through the hierarchy of game importance.

As far as reading your mind goes...ewww. I can barely make it through your posts after you have sorted out and arranged your thoughts to the best of your abilities. I cannot even imagine the strange goings on inside your skull with your thoughts in their raw form.

Sigh...let me try this again...Jack Tatum was playing in a preseason football game. There was nothing riding on this game. The Raiders don't advance to the playoffs if they win, they don't secure home field advantage, they don't clinch the division. Jack Tatum does not have the excuse that he was "caught up in the game" or that driving his helmet into a receivers spine is what "needed to be done" to win the important game as he is paid to do.

Because nothing was riding on this game all I can surmise is that Jack Tatum made the decision to try and maximize the pain he could inflict on an opposing player...his only motivation was to HURT this player and maintain his street cred as an intimidating "assassin" of NFL receivers. The fact that the game was a preseason game refers to Jack Tatum's state of mind...the game did not matter but he did not care, he was going to hurt someone, he was going to make a point to receivers around the league, only this time he really hurt someone badly and he showed no remorse for years!

Do you get it? It is not about the game being a preseason game vs a regular season game vs a playoff game. It was about a man that chose to inflict pain on an opposing player only because he wanted to and it is about a man who could proudly say "mission accomplished" when this opposing player was taken off the field on a stretcher.

Absolutely. I do get what you are saying. I do not agree with you, but I do understand why you might cpme to your conclusions.

Why do you think it is that they hold preseason games rather than just have in-house or team vs ream scrimmages?

Geez, that sounds like 70s football in a nutshell. If Stingley had the same mindset as you it goes far in explaining how he got hurt. You don't take plays off. Maybe Tatum went a little far in the preseason, but you have to know that is a possibility.

But all of this is meaningless. Tatum's most important play in his career was his set up to Franco Harris.

All the Massholes cheering his death should learn to accept what was a legal hit and get over themselves. Rough or not at least he earned his championship.

As for the CharGIRLS doing the same, ever notice you never see any Tatum highlights vs. Spam Diego? That is because highlights are usually pulled from meaningful games which Tijuana North was rarely a part of during Jack's carrer.

The guy is no different than Hines Ward. If Tatum is dirty, so is Ward, but everyone loves Ward and gives him props for his hardnosed play, so there's your answer.
