That's a concert that desperately needs a better DVD release. Nearly half of it was not included on the disk I saw. Luckily, I have the video tape of it, and, to the best of my recollection, only Spinal Tap was left off.

I taped it straight from MTV, and apparently i missed a shiatload...

I remember watching the concert with my parents and brother. It was a great show. My favorite performance was Annie Lennox and David Bowie doing Under Pressure.

The DVD, sadly, is missing the first half of the concert.
And now I see it's out of print. I bought it the day it came out, way back in 2002.

From Wikipedia: The concert was originally released in VHS form (usually in two tape releases worldwide), but due to time limitations, the last two songs by Extreme, the first two of Def Leppard, and the song of Spinal Tap "The Majesty of Rock" were deleted (along with Robert Plant's "Innuendo") in the original release. The US release also omitted Bob Geldof's performance of "Too Late God" and Zucchero's performance of "Las Palabras De Amor".

In April 2002, for the 10th anniversary of the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the concert was released on DVD and entered the UK charts at number 1. The DVD release garnered strong criticism, however, because the whole first half was not included. "Innuendo" was also not included on the DVD, at the request of Robert Plant, explaining that his voice was in very poor condition and he could not remember the words and consequently could not sing the song correctly at the time. In addition, the original 4:3 footage had been cropped down to widescreen, losing a large amount of the original picture.

The English Major: I remember watching the concert with my parents and brother. It was a great show. My favorite performance was Annie Lennox and David Bowie doing Under Pressure.

I still have on regular rotation on my MP3 player, GnR's Knockin On Heaven's Door from that show. It's absolutely astounding. And then later on, Axl and Elton John doing Bohemian Rhapsody, with Freddie's recorded voice doing the opera part. Incredible.

We've almost reached the 20th anniversary of the concert. I think it's time for the full show to be released.

The Brits, as music fans, have always struck me as strange.

They seem to love the bands the NME etc, tell them to and hate the bands NME etc tell them to.

And EVERY concert tape I've seen of Wembley or O2 is packed to the rafters and everyone is going nuts.

Exactly. If it's Taylor's birthday, why are we featuring a song written by Brian May??

/Because most people don't realize it was 4 songwriters in the band??
//Because Taylor's songs were terrible?????
///Yea, that would be the one. Besides "Shear Heart Attack" and the love theme from Flash Gordon, there's nothing.

Nevermind. He wrote "Radio Ga-Ga".

/That makes 3.

Amen. Hell, even Liz Taylor's speech was worth listening to.

yup!

Honestly, as I can remember it, there wasn't a bad moment in the entire show. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience. I'm just still sad as hell that we had to lose Freddie in order to have that show.

My absolute favorite Queen song ever, but I'm in love with my car & '49 aren't far behind. Fat Bottomed Girls is #2 though.

My two fave moments...

Sad: Who wants to live forever (new window) made extra poignant (easier to see in some vids) by Roger Taylor fighting a losing battle versus composure during it.

Awesome: Somebody to love (new window). I'm not big on George Michael, but damn, he does Freddy proud in this version. Probably the closest we've had to Freddie being there again. Brian May's shiat-eating grin after the high note says it all.

The Concert For Life was the last great moment for the Leps before the backlash did its job.

Joe's Union Jack outfit made him look like 10 pounds of poop in a 5 pound bag, but what did it matter in the end when the performance was otherwise powerful? I also loved him and Phil backing up Ian Hunter on "All The Young Dudes" later on in the show.

Also liked Bowie/Lennox, George Michael solo and with Lisa Stansfield, Spinal Tap, "Bo Rap" with Elton and Axl, even Extreme doing "Bicycle Race". That was before Gary deep-sixed his own rep trying to replace Sammy Hagar replacing Diamond Dave.

Besides Freddie, Mr. Taylor was/is one of my favourite people in Queen. I really like his songs, and his singing voice is great, and his guitar riffs are unusually rockin' for a drummer. woot woot.

/plus he has a high speaking voice. it sounds funny.

The only reason I can tolerate the song is because it fits the continuity of Night at the Opera. I love the story of him locking himself in a closet or something unless the band made it the B-side to "Bohemian Rhapsody". Brian May could have swore the song was a joke until Taylor was quite serious about it. That makes total sense to me.

Bear in mind this is the guy that wrote "Fun It". "Fun It"??

/Brian May > Freddie Mercury > John Deacon > Roger Taylor, though really I'd put May and Mercury in a tie for better songwriter in the band.

Got to see them back during "The Game" tour... great show, 'cept they only played the intro to Another One Bites the Dust (literally - just 6-8 notes & that was it.)

/RIP Freddy

fun fact:

"Don't shove it... fun it" played backwards turns into:
"Get-off-me... you SLUT!"

/i'm not kidding. try it.

What about Roger Taylor from Duran Duran? He was a way better drummer. Just listen to the beginning of "Rio" and you will hear it.
