All she wants to do is [POW POW POW POW] [sound of cash register] take their money.

once one of the brightest stars in world pop music

Ha. Haha. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I downloaded Paper Planes just like everyone else, but it was pretty obvious to me that this woman would be a one hit wonder.

Why does this read like an obituary? Somebody had a shiatty concert. Woopty shiat.

I saw her once at a festival. About 30 seconds in, people were leaving so fast you would have thought the place was on fire.

Came to say this. The writer even admits that her recent live performance on Letterman was great. I don't know much about MIA, but everyone has crappy concerts.

The best concert I ever saw was Willie Nelson at Ravinia near Chicago. One of the worst concerts I ever saw was Willie Nelson mailing it in a year or so later.

If you ever have the misfortune of hearing her at a live concert, she is more tone-deaf than Miley Cyrus if that is even possible. Another "musician" that just can't cut it without being "enchanced" in the studio...

I'll never understand this line of thinking. Yes, there are vapid, useless artists who use autotune or whatever. But the use of technology has no correlation to artistic merit.

Are you still pissed off that Bob Dylan started using those electric instruments?

My point is simply that MIA is never on pitch - listen to any of her songs on the album, and then attend a concert - you immediately will notice she sounds awful.

I've got no beef with Dylan - he sounds good either way.

2010-07-26 07:52:04 PM
Meh, she has some catchy songs, but just seems like such a vapid moron when she talks off stage. Her fanbase consists primarily of indie snobs who want to feel worldly by listening to her.

/indie snob.

An electric guitar doesn't play the song by itself. Well, the toy ones do...

I've liked MIA, but she certainly isn't for everyone. She sort of went "Kanye" which is disappointing, because it is weird to say I like her now. I really like her albums, I really like her new album, and that is really the bottom line.

2010-07-26 08:26:50 PM
MIA-decent Cali punk, not my fave but Murder In A Foreign Place was a fun album, nice live too...when did a woman start singing for them (kidding, never heard of that MIA you people are talking about...)

Is MIA the "artist" that re-made Rumpshaker? You know, the one that after the first listen to her hit single all I could remember was "All I wanna do a zoom a zoom zoom zoom and a boom boom...and take your moneyyyyy"?

Yeah, easy come easy go.

Nah, she's the one that regurgitates "Straight to Hell" by the Clash for that Slumdog movie...

I'm definitely not a fan, but seriously!? A couple sound and equipment farkups on a hot-ass day and her career is over? Someone hasn't been to many concerts.

/I wouldn't have left
//because I never would have gone there

I can't stand her. fark her and her politics. She supports terrorists. The LTTE did nothing but farking BOMB civilians during the 20 years of conflict. A friend of mine from Sri Lanka LOST family members due to that shiat.

2010-07-26 09:26:42 PM
The use of "15 minutes" has become pointless. It's supposed to reference stuff like Balloon Boy and Joe the Plumber. It doesn't have anything to do with an artist - specifically an artist that subby heard about because there was a song in a movie that came out a year after the song was released, and since there hasn't been a follow up song in a few years this person must be out of their 15 minutes.

Fark 1995: Someone's 15 minutes are up: Beck releases unlistenable acoustic record.

One of the best shows I saw was Beck, one of the worst shows I saw was Beck. Don't ever see a show at the Aragon Ballroom. I thought that "bad acoustics" talk was all hype. You seriously could barely hear anything.

Subby, when they say "not news" it's in a kinda ironic way. However, nothing on your blog is actually news, so the whole irony thing doesn't work.

I think it was in a recent Rolling Stone article about her that someone close to her admitted that she doesn't have a single clue about that situation and she just blindly supports them because her Dad was part of it or some crap. She's a freaking idiot and barely talented. I really don't see why indie snobs love her. Are they afraid of supporting talented black hip hop artists?

Hate to say it, but it sounds like the sound guy did her in.

That said, I will never forgive her for sampling the Clash.

Wait. So she's claiming she, over a long time period, publicly supported a terrorist organization ONLY because her father did and she didn't know what they actually did?

The suckers were people who went in the first place, because her music sucks freaking donkey dick.

Can't blame her 100% for technical problems and rain though. One of my favorite bands kicked off their Euro tour blowing out the power 3 songs in. Doesn't mean they suck.

Mini Ditka: Um, am I really in the minority that wanted to strangle her after I was exposed to that piece of shiat? That song is farking painful.

No, I hate that song too. She's awful, she has no sense of rhythm and she's permanently off-key.

She reminds me of Lumidee, whom you may remember from that song "Uh oh". It had a great beat, but her vocals were absolutely dreadful. That's what MIA is like.

There aren't many people/groups about whom I say this, but I seriously cannot understand her success. Her music has no redeeming qualities, she's an utter biatch in real life and is remarkably clueless about the politics upon which she spouts. To quote someone else on Fark, she's just a barely attractive freshman political science student with a trust fund, a Che t-shirt and a microphone.

Same here. Saw her here in Austin. Was really, really awful. Luckily it was a festival so I didn't pay a dime to see her. Even the hipsters who were stoked about the show filed out to get water after her third song.

She kept about 1/3 of her crowd by smoking some weed on stage. That was the only entertaining part of her show.

Paper Planes is one of the worst songs in recent memory. Hey let's use sound effects instead of lyrics! That's so awesome and original!
/Probably influenced by idiot friends blasting the song nonstop.

So much hate in this thread. I don't go into your Rush threads and biatch there, do I? You guys need to calm down. Yeah, Paper Planes was annoying because it got played everywhere. She's not supposed to be a singer, she's a rapper - so I don't really care how on key she is. She didn't have a trust fund. She probably doesn't have the greatest live show, rappers aren't really known for that. I don't really care about what politics the artists I listen to support or how much they know about them - I care about the music. I just like her albums, which nobody here complaining has listened to.

You probably wouldn't like the albums anyways, I don't know why I am bothering to type this. To each their own.

Being off key affects the music, whether it's rap or not.
I just care about the music too, and my friends have played some of her other stuff. It doesn't help that they defend it by saying "But she's from Sri Lanka!" Like that is supposed to affect my opinion of her music?

Oh, and that's not her on the albums, that's her producers and the programmers of ProTools.

If you can't do it live, you're not doing it. Period, end of story, STFU, you're wrong. She's Milli Vanilli with an axe-wound and one fewer sock puppet.

THIS!

from wiki:
M.I.A. voiced her concern of violence in video games in June, 2010. "I don't know which is worse. The fact that I saw it in my life has maybe given me lots of issues, but there's a whole generation of American kids seeing violence on their computer screens and then getting shipped off to Afghanistan. They feel like they know the violence when they don't. Not having a proper understanding of violence, especially what it's like on the receiving end of it, just makes you interpret it wrong and makes inflicting violence easier."

If someone played you an album and you liked it, but then you found out they had a bad live show, you would stop listening to them on principle even if you really loved the album? And in the case of TFA, all you are basing their entire live act on is one show? Also, you're basically saying "all hip hop isn't music," which suggests what an open mind you have about music. Liking music on principle isn't actually liking music.

Producers and singers work together in other ways than pro tools. If a singer works with a band, do they have to know how to play the song on every instrument and nail it every single night in order for them to pass your standards? Probably not. You are ruling entire genres of music out because why exactly? To "have taste" in a narrow way that the majority of people wouldn't agree with you on?

Snake, it's fark music tab. They hate EVERYTHING.

don't sweat it. It's nothing personal to MIA.

I liked her first album but haven't listened to her much since. I could never see her live though because that patois of hers is a melange of the world's most unpleasant accents, so I'd rather not hear her between song patter.

Is SnakeLee MIA or just a member of her family?

2010-07-27 12:30:27 AM
Marla Singer's Laundry: SnakeLee: I totally understand people who don't like her musically, but some people hate on her without ever giving her a chance.

Dude. If I don't like her musically, WHY WOULD I LISTEN TO HER MUSIC? That's kind of the point. It doesn't mean I don't like you, because I like your posts, and you're funny and all. I'm not attacking you, or her fans. If she makes you happy, that's great.

But don't sit there and tell me I just have to accept that she has no real musical ability and look past her dismal performances. That's not happening.

My only point is: I get disappointed with people when they just rule out entire genres of music. I hear people all the time say things like "I like all music but country," but if I took even the staunchest anti country person into a time machine to a Bonnie Rait concert in the 80s, they would at least admit that there was merit to it. If I played them Ray Charles "Modern Sounds in Country Western," they would go "okay, I like that."

I personally know some people that won't give MIA a chance because indie kids like her and she talks about shiat that maybe she doesn't fully understand. If you don't like her musically - in other words, because you listened to her and it didn't resonate - then that's fine. It's just that some people that have never heard her outside of a movie trailer swear she is a no talent hack. Not trying to get personal, just trying to challenge people on why they like things.
