Near my house is a shopping center that has the most convoluted entrance system ever. I will see people cross over double yellow lines into a street (going the wrong way, might I add)and they are invariably old or totally confounded by the concept of driving. People must be thinking: "Oh, that's where I want to go...hmmm, I have to cross a median though and dart across 4 lanes of traffic going 50mph...well, here goes nothin!". It's something you have to see to fully appreciate.

It'd like to see more details of the studies. Studies have always shown women are better drivers than young men.

Speaking as a biker,I think about 85% of people in cars shouldn't be drivng. Age, gender, race, and vehicle type seem to have no bearing on the amazing level of asshattery I see on the road every day.

My husband has so many dents and scrapes on his truck that it looks like he drove it in the demolition derby. He is a young man. On the other hand, my car is pristine - and I am a woman. I know he rearended someone while looking at some girl's butt at least once, so how does that make young men better drivers?

Sounds like your husband is a sh|tty driver. Nobody said we're all good drivers, just better than women and the elderly, for the most part.

I've never had a sober wreck in my life. Unfortunately, I've been in several wrecks (in my younger days).

Oh, crap. This guy obviously already needs to get off the road. And to think, one day he'll be old or a woman or both.

I'm saying if you want to get across town fast let the man drive. If you're driving all day let the woman drive.

Apparently, you all missed THIS part of the article:

While highway deaths may be increasing for women and the elderly, men are still killed on the roads in far greater numbers. Nearly 28,000 men died in automobile crashes in 2001, compared with more than 13,000 women, according to government statistics.

Increased speed sees crash deaths increase 10% for women and yet we're STILL less than half the male deaths.

One has to understand that when men and women argue about who is the better driver, the argument will never be resolved, because to men "better" means getting there in the shorter amount of time. To women, "better" means not scaring the shiat out of your passengers.

And the study makes perfect sense to me. More men know how to drive at speeds above 70. Women don't have as much experience at it. And the elderly just can't do it.

Therefore, trucks, the elderly, and asian females with stuffed animal dioramas in their rear windows should all be restricted to the rightmost lanes of freeways

2003-06-05 07:11:51 PM
Hmmmm,I think I see why so few of you ever get laid.

2003-06-05 07:12:04 PM
In my 18 years of driving I have met exactly ONE female driver who was good. She was an asian woman in a small car. I had an extremely hard time keeping up with her. It was great fun trying to catch her. No, I am not a cop nor did I have any reason to catch her. It was just that she was driving so well I had to see if I could match her. I did, but it was rough.

I have seen ONE black person who was a good driver. He was driving a 86 Sentra just like I was and we raced around Charlotte-Douglas airport. I beat him, but just barely. He was a very skilled individual.

Everyone else sucks at driving. During my day at work I see so many people who should never drive. Old people, soccer moms, mexicans, minorities, etc. It gets real old being run off the road by granny or having to slam the brakes because Jose pulled out in front of me. I say, make the driving test 500 questions, in ENGLISH ONLY, and make it so that if you miss one question you have to wait 6 months to try again. Test everyone every year after they reach 60. If we can get the incompetent fools off the road we can save 10,000 lives a year. Might lose $10,000,000,000 in commerce but it would be worth it. Wouldn't it?

2003-06-05 07:12:19 PM
Highway statistics are meaningless unless expressed in terms of passenger miles.

2003-06-05 07:13:10 PM
I'd like to see demographic charts compairing short, twenty mile, trips against long, two-hundred mile, trips. My guess it that guys get more bored with long, steady-speed trips than women do.

2003-06-05 07:17:00 PM
Microbe Actually the whole bad asian drivers is a sterotype you use to hear a lot.. especially woman asian drivers... Since moving to seattle I've noticed almost everyone drives like shiat.. the first day I was here some stupid biatch slowed to almost a complete stop in the middle lane so she could merge right on the freeway..and I mean this was during the couple hours traffic actually moves here.. I never saw that shiat in Phoenix..

Weren't you advocating lane splitting on a thread about motorcycles not too long ago?

(for those who don't know, lane splitting is a practice some cyclists/bikers engage in, in which they pass between cars in both lanes by riding along the lane divider...)

2003-06-05 07:17:51 PM
Simple test to see who is the better driver.

how many women are able to compete with male rally drivers, F-1 drivers, Nascar, NHRA, etc?

Few and far between.

There you have it. The dicussion is over. Males are better drivers.

2003-06-05 07:18:24 PM
Amen, Wadems! Someone needs to come to Washington state and teach these people here exactly what a fast lane is for..

I agree with Cataholic, but also, we need to know how many of each group actually make up the whole. 13,000 women die and 28,000 men die in a year. Are there twice as many male drivers, same amount, what ages? Etc.

2003-06-05 07:19:18 PM

There is no greater evil... than driving too slow in the fast lane...

That is bad, but so is tailgating and harassing someone doing 65 in the slow lane!

2003-06-05 07:19:29 PM
Man driving along at 90mph, woman/elderly pulls out in front of him, man swerves, avoids woman/elderly, crashes, dies. Add 1 to the men dead driving statistic.

Man driving along at 90 mph, woman/elderly has momentarily brain misfunction and doesn't do something stupid, man passes safely, all well.

Maybe more men die in road accidents than women or the elderly, but take the women and the elderly out of the equation and see how many men die then.

And as someone else pointed out below, if you're not overtaking MOVE OVER TO THE RIGHT YOU FARKING IDIOT.

/lives in the SF Bay Area and hates people that 'drive' around here

Rebuttal (no, not a picture of my bare ass):

It sometimes is necessary for drivers to change lanes to avoid t'other drivers who do not drive in a manner that is considerate of the others using the roadways. It the state in which I currently reside, I have found that the paid portions of the highway are filled with people who do not drive at a rate consistent of the posted rate of speed.

Besides, if you are not going to drive at a rate consistent with that of other traffic, you are become a hazard. Now, if there is "bumper-to-bumper" traffic, changing lanes all willy-nilly is not advised, but when the traffic is light there is nothing wrong with, even if one neglects to use directionals occasionally.

I have more of a problem with people driving at a rate of speed beyong what their abilities allows. Recently, there have been 11 fatalities on a roadway around my area (I think it is 11, it might be off) and the solution is to remove two lanes (one in each direction) and install a designated turning lane. This does not do anything to improve poor driving skills and does not even address the problem of people driving beyond the range of their skills. But then again, it is not anyone's fault that they are driving recklessly or dangerously.

my point... as you can guess... I forgot it...

2003-06-05 07:22:00 PM
I think the main reason women and old folks have the most problems on the road is they commit the worst sin possible when driving.
That sin is Failure To Pay Attention.

2003-06-05 07:23:14 PM
How in the hell is it legal to pass between two cars on a lane divider?

I wanna move to Phoenix.
Buh bye Mississhiatty.

2003-06-05 07:24:39 PM
I obey one simple rule when driving: Assume that anyone around you is about to get stung in the eye by a bee in the next second. If you feel you'd be ok to react to whatever they did if that happened, then you're driving safely.

2003-06-05 07:24:41 PM
Yes, Sofa_of_Death, ONLY women and old people pull out/create obstacles in front of you. I must be imagining all the 20 something males in SUV's around here that cut me off while chatting on their cell phones or stop in the middle of the lane to turn left when they're not in the f$#@! turn lane...

I'm a woman driver. Never been in an accident I've caused; but have been rear ended 3 different times while completely stopped at red lights--each time by a male between the ages of 17 and 29. Women drivers can be bad (my mother for one) but males are not exempt.

2003-06-05 07:25:01 PM

Weren't you advocating lane splitting on a thread about motorcycles not too long ago?

Yes, but only in stopped traffic. There is a big difference between driving dangerously becuse you just have to pass someone, and cutting around stopped traffic. It's 2 different things.

If I am doing 70, and there is a big truck in front, then zooming past me and cutting into my lane is pointless. You aren't getting anywhere, and you are likely to rear end someone, or cause some other accident.

Besides, my bike is air cooled,so sitting in traffic isbad forit. and besides, by lanesplitting, I'm getting out of your way.

2003-06-05 07:26:15 PM
Oh, and the worst drivers on earth are not women or old people, they are 16 and 17 year olds. Just ask any insurance company. Nothing is more dangerous than someone who's been behind the wheel for 4-5 months and thinks they know what they're doing when they really don't.

2003-06-05 07:26:27 PM
Urbn: Yes, more men are killed on the roads. Much more. I've seen this be mistaken as suggesting that women are safer drivers on average (or whatever) as it's the easiest "statistic" to get. Actually meaningful however, is acccidents per mile driven, and in these statistics, women take the lead dramatically. In modern society, men still average far more time on the road the women (perhaps because more men commute to work each day?), putting them at greater risk.

More accidents doesn't mean worse driver. Studies I've seen suggest:

Men are twice as likely to have an accident than women.
Men average four times the road travel than women.

Put these two together and there is both an indication that men are much safer drivers, and an explanation for this - they spend more time driving, thus more experience, etc.

Obviously, this all about averages, so cannot be applied to individuals. So instead of looking at gender, looking at factors such as whether somone has driven to work every day for the last 10 years, what kind of driving conditions are in the area, etc. is a potentially less stupid activity :-)

But that said, I'm with you. Few people on Fark read the articles. It's embarressing sometimes.

2003-06-05 07:26:43 PM
Men are better at driving fast, Big Al, but women get cheaper car insurance premiums because they have fewer accidents.

2003-06-05 07:31:38 PM
i don't know if anyone said this or not... but maybe it's because the young men are ENDANGERING everyone elses life. just a thought...

back to bashing women...

2003-06-05 07:31:49 PM
Yes, Archvillain, these are not really meaningful numbers. I just find it interesting that any time something in an article even HINTS at showing a supposed weakness or negative proclivity of females, Farkers tend to jump all over it and ignore anything else the article might say. If it implies something bad about men, it's "Statistics are all made up! Everyone knows this is bs!" As I said further down, you would need to know a lot more: how many drivers in total and broken down, who was found at fault for the accident (not just who died), and many other factors as you've stated.

2003-06-05 07:32:50 PM
not to mention that, when not lanesplitting in stuck traffic, your spot on the road looks like a big inviting spot to a driver not paying much attention (read: average driver).

2003-06-05 07:33:30 PM
Theflyingdutchman: I'm not talking about swerving to avoid an accident, I'm talking about people who seem to feel that passing someone is more important than being safe. You know the ones I mean, they will do anything to pass another car, even if there is no where to go. You see them racing up the highway, swerving in and out of lanes, sometimes between them.

2003-06-05 07:33:34 PM
Urbn, I don't for one moment think it's only women drivers that are bad (here in the Bay Area it's certainly not), but if I can't make a pointless, sexist, stereotypical and possibly offensive comment on here then it just wouldn't be fark. Don't tell everyone though.

I only have a ten minute commute and every single day without fail I get wound up by idiots on the road. No, it's not just women. But a lot of the time it is.

I probably annoy other drivers too, but fark em ;-)

2003-06-05 07:36:35 PM
oh and personally, i'd give up my right to drive if someone would drive me everywhere i need to go.

2003-06-05 07:38:27 PM
Traffic hazards as observed by me around the LA area:
1) Ricerockets and their pinheaded punk drivers
2) Sport hostility vehicle drivers with leadfeet and
surgically attached cell phone. and god knows what
else (read dvd players).
3) Soccermoms late for the game. (had one screech at me
once and I got out and LAUGHED at her. she was so mad
all four kids looked scared and stayed quiet)
4) teenage girls- younger the girl the faster the car.
5) Elderly drivers are at the bottom of the list. all
they do is go slow. and hit the gas instead of the
brakes sometimes.
6) not physically dangerous but a dishonorable mention to
those who feel the need to share their biatchin' bass
response with all cars in a 1/4 mile radius. asshats.
