And it doesn't have to be violence or Islam in the mix - I've met and am related to people I strongly suspect claim to be devoted Christians (when it's convenient) to justify bigotry or just generally looking down their noses at people.

Not long after 9/11, my eldest nephew and I were discussing a poor woman who was beaten up in the U.S. for the "crime" of wearing traditional Indian garb. My WONDERFUL sister (nephew's mom) said the woman should've expected it because of how she was dressed.
