I think his point was that the side effects and body reaction to medication WERE NOT like everyone else's. At least that would be my view on "self-medication." We are all different, and react differently to things. So who's a better judge of how a medication is affecting you? You, or the doctor?

He didn't say that. He said that self-medication is "the most tried and true," implying for everyone, without any sources. Those may have been the results for him, but it's kind of silly to denounce it for everyone else.

I'm depressed so I drink. My drinking makes me depressed. Now I'm an alcoholic which is really depressing and I forgot what I was originally depressed about.

Since my depression is due primarily due to work-related stress, I figure that if I do end up deciding to punch out, I'll do it at my desk.

I have a panic disorder (basically anxiety but much worse and 24/7) and the only thing that really makes me feel normal is if I get a nice buzz. But it's a blessing and a curse because the buzz helps, but when it wears off the anxiety is just worse. I've tried probably 10 different drugs and Xanax is really the only thing that kind of helps. So I'm either drinking, on Xanax or both. Vicious cycle, I've forgotten what it's like to be a "normal" person.

Mostly A, although I'd have some smoke if I had some.

And just why can't I do all three?

Life can be farking shiatty. You can have a year where you lose your mother, your job, your dog, and, for a time, your self-confidence. That's been my 2009-2010 so far, and I'm still unemployed right now.

But in that year, there's still some pretty awesome things that happen, but you need to be ALERT to see them. If you're medicated 24-7, you're going to miss that shiat.

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I smoke pot probably 4 or 5 times a week, so I'm not Mr Teetotaler, but I've never ever in my darkest, most depressed moments, ever considered "Hey maybe there's some pill somewhere that'll make me feel normal again." Pot doesn't make me feel "normal", it makes me feel stoned.

There's no "feeling normal". There's no "normal". The way you "feel" changes as bad and good things happen to you, your outlook changes, and your expectations change, and that's the way farking life is supposed to work. You rely on your family, your friends, and your own strength of spirit, not some farking pill.

Unless it's chemical depression, then I guess you should get some pills. (After getting a second and third opinion).

I mean there are breathing techniques and what not that the doctors say can help, but the bottom line is that I will probably be on medication for the rest of my life.

This is my point as well. You said it well. For a lot of people with depression, anxiety disorder, etc. it really is a chemical imbalance and they really do need medication. You can't just "wish" it to go away.

Probably, but certainly not definitely. There are other ways to deal with it that may be way harder and take more time and effort on your part, but I can guarantee you that being on medication for the rest of your life isn't the singular option.

I mean, there's probably a lot of people who have something pretty close to your condition who cope in much different ways. Different doctors have different approaches, and "conventional" medical wisdom changes every little while.

If you suffer from persistent depression, your mood doesn't change that much with life circumstances. That's why people are prescribed medication. Whether and how well it works is another discussion entirely. I've been depressed basically my entire life, minus a few brief episodes where for whatever reason medication worked for a while. When it did work, it didn't change who I basically am - it altered me far less than smoking a fatty or getting drunk would - it just took away the depression and allowed me to function much better. I wasn't even happy so much as I was just not depressed.

I, for one, stop being depressed and be awesome.

Count me in the pool of people who do both, in excess. Exercise is good too.

I sort of meant normal in terms of how I felt before this disorder started 8 years ago. Not "normal" as being judged by the general public...

Depression doesn't exist. It's just pent up guilt in people who hurt someone during childhood. Grow some balls you crybabies.
