In part, it's due to a severe shortage of computer security specialists and engineers with the skills and knowledge necessary to do battle against would-be adversaries.

yeah, and you want to know why that happens? because you anal retentive morons freak the f*ck out whenever a proto-hacker decides to test his/her skills against the local school network and gets caught. then you throw the f*cking book at 'em and make sure they can never legitimately work in the industry ever again.

for decades we've had school and corporate authorities discouraging the mindsets necessary to develop good security practices and turning kids into mindless drones that don't question authority. after all that indoctrination it's no surprise at all that kids don't think like a hacker should. It's like that line from the old rolling stones song - every cop is a criminal. same thing with security hackers. white hat, black hat...same skill set(s), just a different focus.

And, should snowflake get past that massive road block... when the time comes to pick a major in college and s/he has the option of going into lucrative, stable fields of employment that are unlikely to be outsourced and that pay exceptionally well... or face rampant unemployment, constant fear of outsourcing, and supervisors/bosses that know next to nothing about what you do and demand the absurd of you... well... let's say there's not as much incentive to go into computer science as there once was.

there are some hackers out there. quite a lot of them actually who have the required skill sets that government and corporations are looking for...but the guys who make the decisions and call the shots don't like the people to whom those skill sets are attached. If you want a good white hat, he has to think like a black hat. And good security people don't always fit into the corporate/government office environment.

Or the U.S. just accepts that the PRC will pwn the USDA (and other departments) on a regular basis.

You make it sound so safe. I hired a hacker to do my web security, and he hacked my bank account, stole my identity, and now lives in my house and farks my wife.

Another entry on the list of games I enjoyed but never finished for one reason or another and will probably never get back to. Also on the list: Deus Ex, Bioshock, The Dig, Knights of the Old Republic, Indiana Jones & The Fate of Atlantis, Final Fantasy VII, etc. etc.

Just sayin', I went to public school in FLORIDA, had that happen to me, and I think my college accepted me because of it. And I'm now a CS major.

Okay folks... no need to go further, as this is the best answer I've seen so far.

Most talented folks in the discipline I've seen left for this very reason. Didn't matter whether or not it was corporate or govt.

Seems that only a few companies actually take it seriously, and not surprisingly, those are the ones handling large sums of money (and only a few at that).

FWIW: a CISA, CISSP, etc. does NOT equate to having an infosec background or expertise. It means that you know how to take the exam and have had some limited exposure/knowledge to information security practices.

I'm sorry about that, but the contract you signed clearly stated I was allowed to do those things. Section V, subsection 3.12, paragraph Q7 has the details.

Also, you're out of Cheetos. Please drop some off the next time you come around begging me to leave.

Heard the story this morning. On one hand it sounds like an actual opportunity. On the other hand I was thinking "don't these folks know India exists?"

You've got to be a pretty good, and experienced, programmer to (correctly) deal with security issues. You won't find such in the USA.

The motivated ones have changed into fields with a future (like electricianing?) The lazy ones (like myself) are just chilling waiting for the ax to fall. Nobody new is learning this stuff; no entry level jobs exist.

Don't see what the government can do. Probably just use Indian shops and hope we never go to war with India.

"We don't have sufficiently bright people moving into this field to support those national security objectives as we move forward in time,"

Here's a hint: if you're going to successfully entice bright, highly-skilled people to take a serious look at your field, it's going to cost you. You can't expect these folks to want to work for you when they can earn two or three times as much elsewhere in the private sector.

Whats India have to do with this? Most hackers come from China and Eastern block countries.
