Whoop-dee-doo! $94,000 a year for newspapers provided to 120 legislators and all their staff!

Now, the 600k they're spending on (not) distributing news is another story... :-)

It's a reasonable price/legislator. But whoever controls the keywords used in the search has an edge on everyone. They get to target politicians on both sides with their view of what is important in Florida.

Either that or read the Smoking Gun and watch Cops.

``Somebody just put it on my computer,'' he said laughing. ``I don't know. It just shows up.''

"Well see here this thingamagig with the television connected to this tower type thing just does something MAGICAL, and give me my news. Also, my news comes from Jeb Bush. DUBYA IN 2008 !" I think we have found Finger's identity out (I have a computer.)

But many lawmakers already get their news coverage from newspapers' free Internet sites or from a free Web site, the Sayfie Review, that provides daily links to political stories from the state's largest newspapers.

Shortly after taking the speaker's position last year, Byrd created a House Communications Office with 13 employees making a total of about $600,000 annually. Their charge: Provide information to Floridians as an alternative to news ``filtered'' by TV stations and newspapers.

But none of those 13 employees combs the newspapers daily for stories.

Shouldn't the tag for Florida also include "Dumbass" since thats what all the stories end up discussing anyways?

Use of the 'Florida' tag just takes 'Dumbass' to a whole new level.

Byrd said Tuesday that he didn't know the details of the contracts.

``Somebody just put it on my computer,'' he said laughing. ``I don't know. It just shows up.''
Byrd's signature is on both of the contracts and on the letter sent to lawmakers notifying them of the services.

/yeah we trust the gobment

Obviously this Journalist has no idea what a news clipping service is. You send them a topic list with keywords, they send you hard-copies of relavent articles from local papers, international papers, magazines, television broadcasts, news releases, etc... I ran Dow Canada's media clipping service for eight months. It saves execs a whole lotta time because I spend my whole day reading so they can do important crap like running the company. It's a valuable service and saves from than it costs in people hours.

Byrd touted in a March 21 letter as a ``new service to help you stay better abreast of the issues affecting Florida.''

The Legislature used to have an old guy who would come in at 4 in the morning to provide clippings of news across the state by 9:00 a.m. He'd have the big stories from all the major papers on everyone's desk before 9 a.m. About 5 years ago, they started scanning everything. Same product, available electronically. It took one old retiree who probably made about $50K a year.

What a friggin' waste.

Byrd said Tuesday that he didn't know the details of the contracts what does he care he isnt paying for it, if he didnt have this service he would most certainly miss his t-off time with lobbyist, then where would he get campaign money from?

I don't know what's scarier:

1) they rely on Florida news sources (thinking Slatinel)
2) they need to read a paper to know what's going on with their constituencies
3) they are oblivious to how much money they're spending

This is nothing! The city of Cranston, RI bankrupted itself by hiring cross guards to work an hour a day for 180 days a year.. and paid them $15/hour plus full benefits. Came out to be over $600,000 a year!

He neeeds to spend that money on the Democrats to further dumb them down so they won't even be able to find the polls next time.

I used to work for Video Monitoring Services. They make money reselling media, basically. I was never sure how legal it was, but I got a paycheck out of the deal. I also never once showed up on time. I was also not fired. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me. Anyhow, you'd be surprised how many asshats will pay big bucks for a little notice every time some keyword shows up in the paper / on the news / in the media in general.
