As far as I'm concerned, someone should take a Blade to his finances. He's in some Major League trouble. The jail bus is leaving, and he should have been on it as a Passenger 57 months ago. I think I've just about hit my Boiling Point with Wildcats who think they're above taxation, and especially the ones who think they're Unstoppable. I'm glad his appeal didn't go Undisputed. I just hope he learns from his Hard Luck, and he thinks about his mistakes for more than 7 Seconds. The last thing I want is for him to pull a Disappearing Act. Maybe he can coach a penal football team and have them Drop Zone coverage from their playbook.

Just make him pay it all back. If Willie Farkin' Nelson was forgive millions and millions of his tax debt, why not allow Wesley here the same courtesy?

Rubber Biscuit: Just make him pay it all back. If Willie Farkin' Nelson was forgive millions and millions of his tax debt, why not allow Wesley here the same courtesy?

Because the "I was too stoned to realize I was supposed to file taxes" defense worked better for Willie than for Wesley?

So, Wesley Snipes, a black man, is going to prison for three years for a crime that endangered no one.

Meanwhile, white females stars who put the public at risk by driving around drunk and/or high manage to avoid any jail time at all.

Sure, seems fair.

Because Nelson isn't a Wesley Snipes type, and wrote nice songs yo' mama can sing to.

the difference is I know I have to pay taxes I just didn't vs. I don't believe Americans should have to pay taxes so I won't pay taxes.

Rubber Biscuit: Just make him pay it all back. If Willie Farkin' Nelson was forgive millions and millions of his tax debt, why not allow Wesley here the same courtesy?

Because there's a difference between civil failure to pay taxes and criminal tax evasion.

2010-07-17 06:36:26 AM
OK, but if he's been caught and convicted of criminal tax evasion, what purpose is served by giving him prison time?

Just make him pay what he owes, plus a penalty. Like double.

Yeah, but the conviction itself is completely fair. The solution to the discrepancy you're pointing out is to force the women in question to serve full sentences, not to let off every other criminal to make the law all evenly unenforced.

Oh, I absolutely agree. I just don't think any purpose is served by putting someone convicted of tax evasion in prison. If he's guilty - hit him where it hurts, in the wallet.

I'm with you on the race angle for everyday folks, but as for stars see Simpson, O.J.
Snipes' had crap lawyers, to get a sentence like that.

Rubber Biscuit: Just make him pay it all back. If Willie Farkin' Nelson was forgive millions and millions of his tax debt, why not allow Wesley here the same courtesy?

Yes, it's like the old debtors' prisons - like you can pay someone back when you can't work!

And no parole in federal prisons. He'll have to do the whole time. None of this 'out in 50' shiat. No release for overcrowding.

2010-07-17 09:54:13 AM
Wow. So our tax dollars pay to take care of him for 3 years, all of which during he can't work? Sure, maybe he deserves some prison time, but damn. Give him 90 days and a huge fine, if he messes up again then whack his ass like a dead pony.

You have to be a special type of asshole to get jail time for tax evasion. You only will get jail time if you go to trial and lose. Even then, jail time is usually reserved for the most flagrant offenders. Wesley had numerous chances to take a deal and avoid jail time, but he thought he would win with a stupid defense.

No. Messing around with other people's money is a crime that warrants prison time, in my opinion. But putting tax evaders in prison just costs the system more. Since what they care about is keeping their money, make them pay what they owe and a hefty fine. As far as I'm concerned, add about 10,000 hours of community service to the package.

2010-07-17 10:39:04 AM
Normally I wouldn't side with someone playing the race card to avoid paying taxes, but in this instance I think Snipe's sentence is overkill for this reason:

He was only convicted of willfully refusing to file a tax return for three years. That's it. Three misdemeanors.

Granted, they charged him with a lot more, and his insane "861 argument" that he didn't have to pay taxes was definitely worse than Nelson's piss poor accounting, but they didn't convict him on any of those charges. He was convicted and sentenced only for not filing federal tax returns.

Three years? That's f**king absurd. When people talk about government overreach - this is what they should be referring to. Wesley Snipes may be well on his way to becoming a hero to the Tea Party. That's how farked up that sentence is.

Off with their heads, obviously.

Like many blacks, he may have a Sears card.

2010-07-17 11:44:37 AM
Prosecutors are making an example out of him because of his fame.
He's convicted of three misdemeanors.

Basically he beat the felony rap.

But he'll stay in a special low security facility, he knows quite a bit of martial arts as well, so it's not going to be that rough for him.

But yeah, I don't think tax evasion should be a prison thing, it should ruin you financially maybe, but not prison. Also to point out, he might still flee the country.
