Well said, Starlight.

This person and the other person were co-workers. It could still be an isolated incident. However if it is an attack, with the amount of elderly retired people in Florida it would kill an awful lot of people.

2001-10-08 08:45:51 AM
Not that it wouldn't kill a lot of people anyway.

2001-10-08 08:46:43 AM
Hey - isn't that Dennis Quaid in the med-tech gear in the photo???

On the face of it, it seems odd that it is the offices of the Sun trash-rag that seem to be the source of the spores.

I just took a good close look at a microscopic sample of the Anthrax virus. Well, see if you notice anything weird.

anthrax takes about two weeks for the symptoms to be noticed (most people just believe they have the flu at first and don't seek doctors). Not to be an alarmist or anything,,,,,,,,,,,,,but if a third case pops up I'd say anyone with a cold in Florida should seek a doctor.

I suppose the part about "I feel fine" rings a bit hollow in the REM repetoir now, eh?

I am farking tired of the news media scaring the shiat out of the public about "bio-terrorist" attacks. stop trying to predict the future and give us the news. scaring the shiat out of people isnt going to help.

2001-10-08 09:21:04 AM
"When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout." I'm going to hide under the covers. Thanks MSNBC.

2001-10-08 09:21:15 AM
I'm curious, is one of the symptoms of anthrax the feeling of intense burning during urination and a severly discolored taint?

If so, I need to go to a hospital...to give blood...

2001-10-08 09:21:59 AM
Well, seeing as how a nasty cold has already come and gone through my section of FL; either we all have REALLY good immune systems, or this is an isolated event. Hoping for the latter.

2001-10-08 09:22:11 AM
I live in Florida. Not far away from where the terrorists lived, and VERY close to Boca. This is news. It may not be a bio-terrorist attack, but I still want to know about it.

2001-10-08 09:22:36 AM
Heh...lucky me to be allergic to something like pennicilian and other drugs related to it.

Ah well if its my time then its my time. If I did contract an illness like this I'd be asked to be dropped off in the middle of Taliban territory with nothing but my sword and my nice WWI bayonette so I could go out in a flash of screaming, hell-raising glory.

2001-10-08 09:42:20 AM
Its the friggin tabloids. The magazine is the Sun. Who wants to bet someone was pokin around somewhere it wasn't supposed to

2001-10-08 09:54:33 AM
OK, with the first case we could brush it off as random. A second case, so close in time and space to the first, given the extremely low base rate of anthrax infections in the U.S., is starting to scare me a bit.

2001-10-08 09:59:07 AM
I like their early work... "I'm the man" and that Public Enemy colaboration. Then, they did that shiatty "Sound of White Noise" album. I turned that crap off.

quote from orlando sentinel:

"the building where both worked was closed after the bacterium was detected there"

how did it get into the building?? i thought this was meant to be a goat fur living bacteria??!!

except.....
*scary*

Boojieboy, If it wasn't close in space, then I'd be really worried. You are talking about someone that worked in the same building. The first one could simply have coughed on him.

<paranoia mode> This was at a tabloid. Did they find something that freaked the government out? </paranoia mode>

2001-10-08 10:19:04 AM
This building where he worked was a Tabloid, The Sun. It must be the work of Oprah Winfrey and Elizabeth Taylor.

2001-10-08 10:32:22 AM
Yikes. I work in Boca. I thought the Sun offices were in Lantana... but that's still too friggin' close for me. Can I just take some of the antibiotics now?

2001-10-08 10:39:47 AM
Can regular old citizens get ourselves vaccinated? And how much does it cost? Anyone know?

2001-10-08 10:41:26 AM
Anthrax found in the building.

This is pretty scary seeing how i work within walking distance of that buliding. Pretty freaky seeing all the news trucks around.

2001-10-08 11:05:53 AM
This story may mushroom. I'm not sure how anthrax "naturally" finds its way into the air inside of an office building in concentrations high enough to kill one man and be caught in the nasal passages of another. This may be nothing, but I don't believe it's alarmist to report this story. Given the timing, if this is a coincidence then it is a *large* coincidence. If it's not a coincidence, then it will do the public a great amount of good to get the story out early while there is still time for treatment. I'd bet the 300 other employees in that building are glad for the heads up.

The worst part is that flu season is coming, and it will be hard to tell the difference between the flu and Anthrax. People should get flu shots so if they have flu like symptoms, they will know that its probably not the flu (but not neccesarily anthrax).

2001-10-08 11:24:35 AM
Jeez.. Well, I sorta get the Impression that Anthrax can be treated, am I right? If I am, Then I'm at a little more ease than I was 5 minutes ago.

2001-10-08 11:34:49 AM
Yeah.... hi. Have these guys at CDC checked the mail room to see if it came thru there? If the guy opened a care package and had it on his hands and then typed anything...

2001-10-08 11:40:48 AM
oh man, I hope these cases are just environmental.

it is kinda scary to think about the real potential of a disease attack.

this sucks

Now that's funny. It bugs me when the lame headlines make it through and good ones get edited.

Well hey, at least something good is coming out of all of this, we SoFla Farkers are getting to know each other a bit better.

Like 3M TA3, I live near where the hijackers did (edge of Ft Lauderdale/Davie), and I work in Boca. Maybe we'll have to have a Fark party soon...

FloriFark! Weeeeee!

Can we make it soon, before we all die of anthrax?

(I live in Plantation, btw, and work in Boca)

2001-10-08 12:56:34 PM
zeander: Gas masks are not very effective against bio attacks so you would be wasting your money. Second, do you think this other case of anthrax may have resulted from contact with guy who died of antrax?

I love the way the media tries to scare people.

2001-10-08 01:13:42 PM
Since anthrax is NOT a communicable disease, I find it highly unlikely that this other "case" (wherein bateria were found in a man's nasal passage) resulted from contact with his co-worker.

Unless, of course, his co-worker was walking around the building with a mister full of spores....

2001-10-08 01:16:53 PM
man... if the terorists were smart... they would act like they were gonna use e-coli as a weapon... so everyone would freak out at every one of the cases.
a little statistical trick for everyone... when you read that this is a ultra uber rare form of the disease and you have a 1 in 10,000 chance of catching it... it seems scary.. but what you need to remember... is that this might be a rare kind... but there are many rare kinds! if there was another rare kind that would cause you to have a 1 in 5000 chance of getting a 1 in 10,000 disease... yes he died of antrax... yes it was not a common form... but there are several forms of that disease and someone is bound to get one sometime... each form is rare to get... but... you have to add the chance of all of them... since no matter what kind someone gets it will be really rare... and make us all go "wow! scary!"

2001-10-08 01:40:03 PM
I thought Anthrax wasn't contagious from person to person!? Is that incorrect?

2001-10-08 01:41:25 PM
Right - why don't I read BigPhilly's entry. Duh.

2001-10-08 01:43:53 PM
Double fark.

2001-10-08 01:50:12 PM
Yes, anthrax can be transmitted person-to-person. It can even be transmitted from Animals(cows)-to-persons. There are also different strains of Anthrax.

2001-10-08 02:05:42 PM
The Sound of White Noise was a great album, you snot. "Packaged Rebellion" and "Only" were 2 of the best songs they ever did.

2001-10-08 02:51:03 PM
im sorry..but did neone actually find this story at all surprising...i said it in the post after the first case was found....i highly doubt this is just a random coincidence....thatantrax would all of a sudden show up less then a month after the attacks and less then 20 miles from where the terrorists lived....good job government...keep up the misinformation till we all die

2001-10-08 03:07:44 PM
Penile - from the CDC link you provided:

Anthrax has little potential for person-to-person transmission; standard precautions are thus adequate for health-care workers treating anthrax patients.

Ok, "little potential" does not equal "no potential", so I withdraw my previous "not communicable" statement. I had seen various sources that stated it as fact, so I believed it.

2001-10-08 03:44:11 PM
It's no longer isolated. When it is discovered to be Afghani related, tactical nukes.

2001-10-08 04:05:24 PM
No bio terror attack here. Keep moveing. First case in twenty five years of this type of anthrax on the guy that just died of it and someone else now has it. Keep moving along folks. It must be luck. Dozens of people work and hundreds visit that building everyday. Keep moveing along.
Nothing to see here. If the whitehouse comfrims bio terror attack riots would be in every city. Trust the government they after all they protected us against the first three.
