(National Post)   Study that showed violence against women increases on soccer match days used flawed, cherry-picked data, as replays show every single documented domestic violence incident was actually flopping   (fullcomment.nationalpost.com) divider line 25

So the study had really awful officiating, then?

Same claim was made about Super Bowl Sunday. It was 100% erroneous, but you'll still see it claimed as fact now and again. It's nice to see soccer is popular enough to be putting on some big boys pants in the realm of fabricated outrage.

The claim is too politically useful to give up, like the "rule-of-thumb" thing.

So in this case, does flopping equal falling down the stairs or running into a door?

Ironically, if men put the pimp hand down MORE, happiness for all would go up.

I concur, as does the author of TFA. False or not, it is just too juicy to not trot out every once in a while. The Superbowl thing never really made sense to me: sure guys are drinking more but they're typically in party situations. DV doesn't usually happen in front of your friends and neighbors unless the abuser is completely out of control... which in that case why would he wait for the Superbowl?

Plus, gambling aside it is the NFL weekend where the fewest fans have to react to the disappointment of "their team" losing. Either way, it didn't add up when I really gave it some thought.

The Super Bowl canard never made sense to me anyway. I get more raging testosterone during the 16 regular season games than during the Super Bowl. Just football, no pageantry, shorter commercial breaks, no big parties, no funny advertisements, no non-fans watching with me.

Well, to be fair, the BYU player was grabbing our Heather in the crotch and tugging on her shorts before the ponytail pull. It was kinda hot actually.

It comes down, simply, to "how can I equate my point to what's currently on everyone's lips" - world cup soccer is about socialism, Avatar was really about the environment/white-guilt/George Bush, etc. When something is the hot topic people will bend over backwards to associate their soapbox stance with said topic to get it in the news, that's all.

one especially pejorative but persisting cultural trend is the impunity with which all men can be demonized.

Someone should write a book about this. No, really.

I think that just exposes the the violence inherent in the system!

BYU's biatch got what was coming to her... maybe if people slapped kids right after they declared their affiliation with or (god forbid) donned any BYU clothing- okay thats not going to fix anything, but it will make the rest of us feel better

Interesting article. A little research also shows Dr. Christina Hoff Sommers is rather controversial herself, however.
This will be fun to fact check.

Even women who have been beaten don't act as girly as soccer players.
