milominderbinder: Yeah,

It's all bad down in the south. You're right. Stay away! There be dragons and hillbillys here!

You have fun with all that smug as your Northern/Eastern cities decay into foul nests of shabby infrastructure, lost industry, absurdly high taxes, high crime rates, and overwhelming pollution.

Filled with some of the rudest, most arrogant, self-aggrandizing people I have had the misfortune to meet.

Seriously, look at what Wall-street and Harvard have wrought upon this nation and ask yourself, are they REALLY the smart people?

I'll take some good humored, natural, easy-going folks around me any day. Keep the stuffed shirts for yourself.

As for seceding...you better hope to God we don't decide to. All the heavy industry has moved SOUTH, with the jobs, along with a ton of the military's infrastructure. Where are the oil refineries again?

I'm thinking Texas could probably take on the whole NE and win handily.

I'd like to add... how's that "Ground Zero Mosque" working out for you?

While I don't care for the confederate flag, I think this thread is over-focusing on one or two photographs. Overall, this photo-essay brings back happy memories for me. As kids, we used to dig giant holes and fill them with water trying to make a pool. We'd walk for a couple of miles through the woods to get to a knee deep creek so we could "swim". When it rained, there was an empty lot near by that was hilly and all red-clay. We'd get a running start, flop on our bellies, and 'bob-o-sled' through twists and turns all the way to the bottom. It was silly, active fun. I think it was better for kids than alternating between video games, movies, the Ipod. There are people in my neighborhood who drive their kids to my house on Halloween ... some live no more than two doors down. Yeah, those kids are overweight. So, parents, my advice is, go make a big mud patch in your backyard and get your kids out there!

The Confederate flag is a symbol of hate to me and blah, blah, blah. Nothing about wearing it blah, blah, blah or waving it in your yard is good humored and easy going.

Although, I don't always mind its display because when I go "home" to visit, the people to whom I don't wish to speak are easily identifiable by yes, their ignorance.

I lived in the South for the first twenty years of my life. I know what that orange clay mud smells like and looking at pictures of people diving into it made me gag. Christ, it smells rotten. Ughhh. Also, pig's feet are to be cleaned thoroughly and put in a crock pot with beans and hot peppers, then served with cornbread after cooking at least 8 hours. God damn that's good food.

"Riight. Like youve never hung out and done things with your friends that might be considered silly."

While wearing racist paraphernalia? No, no, I haven't.
Wearing a Confederate flag and saying it's because you're Southern is like wearing a swastika and saying it's becasue you're German.
Which would be a stupid thing to do, right?

"Wearing a Confederate flag and saying it's because you're Southern is like wearing a swastika and saying it's becasue you're German."

Not really. It's not the flag flown during the war. In fact, they kept changing it. What people use now is some sort of later flag that was marketed to them. Along with a whole identity. Just calling a group of people racist doesn't further anyone's understanding. You have to understand symbols in their context, not judge them based on your context.

What people use now is some sort of later flag that was marketed to them. Which would be a stupid thing to do right?

The state of GA included the "stars and bars" on the GA state flag after the ruling of Brown v. Board of Education just to let everyone know how the good ole boys in the state legislature felt about integrating their schools. The whole f'in argument about changing the flag was based on this fact on one side, with the other side screaming, "Tat's me hert'age!"
The reason why the Confederate states used the "stars and bars" the most is because it was one of the few designs they came up with THAT DIDN'T LOOK LIKE A SURRENDER FLAG!
What context are you referring to?

Brown v Board of Education was 50 years ago. The use of a symbol changes over time. The reference in the thread above for tea partiers would probably be more accurate. Users of the flag claim it is about "southern pride" which means southern nationalism. This is a blanket term for a whole host of associated things like states rights, insularism, xenophobia, and distaste for white pretention. Nina9, your generalizations are 50 years old. Not all black people in the South are offended by the confederate flag. http://www.texasconfederateveterans.com/BlackSupporters.htm

You keep calling people stupid for their beliefs that you don't even attempt to understand. Who is the prejudiced one here?

PS. And you're wrong on the flag, the "stars and bars" is a different flag than the confederate flag. This is relevant because if we're going to argue about a symbol, lets at least get the name right.

1. What we call the 'Rebel flag' is a Confederate battle flag that was popular in both theaters of war pretty much throughout the duration of the conflict. The Stars and Bars was the official flag of the Confederacy. While there were many flags used, both in government and on the battlefield, the Rebel flag and Stars and Bars are the most common.

2. The Rebel flag doesn't necessarily mean racism, but in my experience most of the people who prominently display it are either unabashed racists or secret ones.

3. Saying "The Civil War was about states' rights" is akin to a coroner saying someone died because their heart stopped beating. Without slavery, you have no war.

4. Roll Tide.

I agree with your post entirely!

Prior to moving to Texas from England, everyone wished me well and seriously thought I was going to be shot or run down by a horse. It was without a doubt the best time of my life. I've lived in Canada for a few years now but about to move to Tuscaloosa, Alabama and can't wait! And again, everyone here laughed and made the typical "southern" comments. Interestingly, it's usually the people that have never lived there that have bad things to say about it. I love how laid back people are there and even in academia where there are some exceptional douchebags.

/I suppose that's a cool story, bro

I don't know what part of TX your leaving and its size, Tuscaloosa is pretty small other than the school. I loved it there. Nice folks, gets busy during football season, and not too far from B'ham. May I recommend some good ribs at Dreamland, chopped pork at Archibalds, and nice neat place called The Cotton Patch. I miss it.
