Strangely enough, the one thing the Navy does use F-16's for is Topgun.

It's meant to mimic the camo schemes that were often used by Soviet bloc nations during the cold war. The light/agile nature of the F-16 also mimics a lot of the Russian-built airplanes that US pilots might face, which is why they're used in the aggressor role.

Two pilots who violated a no-fly zone related to President Obama's two-day visit to Las Vegas

So there's a no-fly zone everywhere a president goes?

My assumption would be yes. IIRC, when Gore was visiting Columbus they actually shut down the highways he was driving on (this was back when he was Veep, not a shill yelling about global warming).

Yep. The FAA enacts Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) around any presidential activity. This usually excludes airlines, police, medical and flights operating under IFR.

Link (new window)
The FAA may also issue Temporary Flight Restrictions, or TFRs, which are similar to Prohibited Areas but which are typically effective for a few days or weeks, versus the essentially permanent nature of a Prohibited Area. For example, a TFR is typically issued to prohibit flights near the President's destination when he travels outside Washington.

What is the Top Gun reference for? Anytime any military fighter takes off, is that a valid reason for a Top Gun reference?

There is nothing remotely related to Top Gun here, other than military jets were in the air.

After watching videos of actual air strikes against real targets by the A-10, I would have to say that is the most fearsome goddamn things I have witnessed. I cannot even imagine being at the receiving end of a strafing run. I actually felt sorry for a second for some of the targets.

My brother was in Gulf War I. He mentioned the scene at the "Highway of Death", as the Iraqi army commandeered any vehicle they could find to get out of Baghdad. As the road out was a long, straight highway, the A-10's just lined up along the road and strafed the hell out of all the vehicles. He described it as an almost pitiful slaughter.

hbalien: So there's a no-fly zone everywhere a president goes?

Very much so. Invariably that asshole Shrub would stump for some dillweed at a $10,000/plate fundraiser east of Seattle on a Friday afternoon - completely farking the commute as most hwys were shut down for 45 minutes each way. Said dillweed's campaign would garner maybe half a mil - while estimates of the cost to the taxpayer were around 3 million, not including local traffic and other aggravation.

I think it was W's way of giving liberal Seattle the finger.

Over a year ago, I was at Sky Harbor International Airport to catch a flight to Vegas, when Obama was arriving in Phoenix. All aircraft were grounded and delayed for at least an hour to allow his highness to land unmolested. As a result, got to Vegas way later than expected and nearly ruined my plans for the evening.

Don't forget the unannounced Air Force One photo op right above NYC. Pretty safe to say all Presidents do this crap. Perks of the job.
