That's a new rule?

2010-07-09 12:07:04 PM
FTA- The entire fire department in Oliver, British Columbia is facing rotating two-week suspensions after they drank a keg of beer they rescued from a burning hotel

/NOT YOURS

2010-07-09 12:07:09 PM
"...legally".

2010-07-09 12:08:25 PM
Depends on the beer. Hell it might as well be liable to use it to put out the fire than drink it.

2010-07-09 12:09:11 PM
Aw jeez, that's rule #?? Don't take shiat, don't move shiat unless necessary

/we get our beer handily given right to us, afterward, usually...

2010-07-09 12:09:14 PM
"...after further investigation, the city and fire officials determined the whole 30-plus-member force should be penalized after they drank at least one of the kegs."

Hea hea hea, sure, punish everyone.

Who needs firemen anyway, it's much more exciting watching shiat burn down.

At least the beer is okay

Oh, FFS. Put it on your insurance claim you ingrates.

Years back while living in Greensboro (NC), a local bar caught fire and burned to the ground. Prior to its demise, friends swiped 4 cases of beer. It was singed and nasty - but free.

/didn't drink it

Beat me to it.

This is so stupid. If the firefighters paid for the keg, almost $400 which the hotel owner says isn't enough to cover the cost of the keg(BS, more like the profits of selling each 8oz glass for $6), then this should be a non-issue.

They saved the hotel, and the owner should be grateful. Also the mayor's descision to enact punishment for all even though not all were involved is just wrong.

But hey in America, we firmly stand by the ludicrous logic that one bad apple spoils the entire bushel.

2010-07-09 12:15:10 PM
If I'm not allowed to "rescue" the beer, I'm letting the place burn.

2010-07-09 12:15:16 PM
Wait a minute, a $400 check doesn't cover the cost of a keg? What kind of beer was this???

I expect the city of Oliver, British Columbia to come under a series of cryptic graffiti attacks in the near future.

2010-07-09 12:15:37 PM
Are you effin kidding me!? All this commotion over beer? Firefighters aren't even allowed to drink on shift so that should not be an issue.

They risk their asses all the time, and beer should be readily available to them whenever they damn well feel like a beer.

2010-07-09 12:15:41 PM
"the hotel was destroyed in the blaze"

There needs to be a caveat about actually extinguishing the fire before reaping the spoils.

"But, the volunteer firefighters may not be in the clear just yet, since the police have said it is up to federal authorities to decide if criminal charges will be laid."

uhh... what am I missing that indicates its up to federal authorities?

Wouldn't this simply be a provincial crown decision?

That's what I was thinking. And if it was that good, I guarantee you the fire would have ruined it.

Punishment shall be swift. Firehouse arrest with a kegs of firehouse beer, and 6 female strippers in lockdown with our fearless firefighting brethren for 48 hours
straight.

How's that?

They took 6 kegs, probably enough volume to involve the ATF.

The hotel was destroyed. So no, they did not save the hotel. They did manage to save (steal) the beer.
How noble that the volunteer firefighters are all willing to take a 2 week suspension from their part time, most likely non-paying job.

Stealing is stealing. Had cops done this, most of you would be calling for their heads on a platter.

2010-07-09 12:25:08 PM
It's strange that anyone is defending it.

A business just faced a major loss. Something worth a lot of money was taken but public servants, likely well compensated for their work albeit it's heroic work.

This isn't a video game. The most macho people do not get to keep what they want. There's a level of trust the public must have in these people or you have massive problems.

I'm glad the fire unit is taking this seriously and seeing it as a unit wide failure. They should know they all abide by honor.

the rcmp are too busy getting DUI's to worry about that

2010-07-09 12:26:06 PM
Firefighter or no, they stole the beer kegs (six of them per the story). The check probably didn't cover the beer cost for six kegs -- depending on the brand of beer. They know they screwed up, that's why the offered a check in hopes of not being charged.

/had firefighter family
//doesn't reflect well on firefighters

Its canada.. no ATF.

hell when the cops murdered that guy at the airport in BC it was not even a federal case.

Yeah, I've gotta side with the hotel here. There should be an expectation that firefighters saving your building aren't going to take things from it. The logic of "it would have burned anyway" does not apply.

This was Canada. And actually the hotel was destroyed. Still, I am surprised. We firmly believe everyone who does a fantastic job here deservse a beer, from the Firefighters who protect us, to Champion Lady Hockeyplayers who MIGHT be just a tad underage, somewhere...

So if a fireman loots it's OK, but if someone else loots it's a crime?

hah, no. Looting is looting. It's taking advantage of a hazardous situation to steal goods for personal gain.

Stealing is stealing. The firemen stole. Simple.

Subby is an asshat, and should probably go way.

Meesterjojo: Stealing is stealing. The firemen stole. Simple.

Agreed. Now it being Canada, if they had simply turned it over to the bar owner, chances are he would have given them a keg... if you know they had saved the bar instead of the beer.

Hey I rescued your daughter from the fire, I should get to do what I want with her now. Hell, if it weren't for me the fire may have claimed her. Here's a check to cover the cost.

Let it be written.

Wouldn't be a problem if the owners had done the right thing and locked themselves in the basement until all the beer was drunk first.

E: you have no clue what being responsible and not stealing stuff means

2010-07-09 12:47:51 PM
This is just another example of idiot firemen doing stupid stuff. Everyone always runs to their defense when they do something stupid because they're supposedly "heros." It's just like when one of them dies in the line, it's usually because they did something stupid and got themselved killed. We praise them and ignore their stupidity when they behave like idiots. It should stop.

2010-07-09 12:48:05 PM
Yes, in this case, the hotel owner is being an ass. Those firemen deserve at least a beer. However, it was his beer, and the firemen did steal it. The larger issue is whether firemen have a right to take whatever they want from a burning building. The law is based on property rights, not what someone thinks they deserve.

As for punishing the whole department, according to the article, they asked to be punished as a group.
