The mother has prostitution charges on her, she's a sex offender too. And "willful exposure" could be peeing in public, flashing a kid, or anything in between.

Prostitution isn't considered a sex offender type of crime. I don't know where you get your defintion of "sex offender" from, but I've never heard it to include prostitution.

This is very sad, the best thing that could happen to that girl would be to be taken from those two failures. Are there no grandparents? Are there no caring homes in Australia?

The first world countries have failed their children.

This. One of the things that family courts need to start considering is the reality that being placed with family is often NOT in the best interests of the child. There are many, many couples out there who would desperately love to adopt a child -- give the girl a chance with one of those. Neither of these dirtbags deserves anything but stripped custody and forcible sterilization.

Not commenting on the case, but just because someone is a Convicted Sex Offender, doesn't mean they are any danger to anyone's child, much less their own.

However, regarding this particular case, I don't think the girl needs to be with either one until they clean up their act.

I know it seems draconian and it would never pass in the USA due to the shrieking cries of 'Freeeeedoooom', but I find it amazing that we can require a license or permit for every little thing imaginable, but any jackass can go and produce a kid.

OK I'll bite. Say someone doesn't get the license. What then? Mandatory abortion? Seizing the child at birth?

From TFA: put on the sex offenders' list after being convicted of wilful and obscene exposure.

Gotta love how such an act gets him put on the same list as people who molest and rape children. Great for the headline to get people against the guy and the case. Obviously this guy is unsuitable to raise his child or be near children. You know, because he probably got busted for mooning someone. :-/

Granted, the story doesn't paint either parent as much of a model citizen or ideal parent or anything. ;)

Yeah, no. Anyway, I thought vaccines were not required in America thus the problem with parents fearful of autism not getting their kids immunized.

Her drug-screening tests repeatedly indicated the presence of benzodiazepines and opiates. She was even suspected of once taking drugs while in the court precinct arguing for custody.

Her home was once described as filthy and strewn with vomit and faecal material, though the court accepted its cleanliness was usually "probably in an acceptable range".

That kid has a bright future to look forward to.

No clue.

Listen, I'm not saying we should do anything like that. But since we're not, we need to, as a society, step up our efforts in protecting children.

They have no choice in how they are brought up in this world and yet we too often fail them.

Not everyone is fit to be a parent and yet everyone can with little consequence. There are stories of women having half a dozen kids, each one taken away by child protection, only for her to get knocked up again.

That may be the saddest thing I've seen in a while.

I wrote an article for our Journal of Child and Family Services, arguing quite forcefully that, despite the worldwide passion for "family reunification", sometimes there just isn't a family to unify. This would certainly seem to qualify.

"was put on the sex offenders' list after being convicted of wilful and obscene exposure."

Nice details there.

So is he a guy who goes around in a trenchcoat flashing women his junk? Or did he just go streaking once or go outside drunk and naked after a party?

Is he a convicted Sex offender because he urinated in public or slept with a 16yo when he was 18? Or because he actually did something worthy of being put on that list?

wilful and obscene exposure

Sounds like he pissed on the wrong persons wall to me.

2010-07-05 12:01:51 AM
Why are so many Farkers defending the father?

Both parents are complete farkups. Take the kid away from both of them, for her sake.

Also, frivolous use of the sex offenders' registry is not half as prevalent in Australia as it is in America, so it's doubtful that he was convicted for drunken streaking or public urination.

To everyone who tells infertile couples to "Just adopt" - well, here's your answer. The state's worship of DNA trumps virtually everything, including common sense. (Though I will say that though the bit about their home sounds awful, "once described as" could mean that there was 1 awful report against 20 mediocre ones. People can sometimes get, shall we say, carried away when describing situations).

Cool story bro (sis) time:

When I worked at Legal Aid I represented a 23 year old woman who was fighting for custody over her youngest of five children (from 5 different fathers). The father was a complete scumbag too (long criminal history, never paid child support), but as we were prepping our case, I asked it was true that she had had sex with another man while her 3 year old son was in the room watching.

"That's crazy," she said, "he was watching the TV in the room, he never saw a thing!"

Sadly, I won that case.

2010-07-05 12:04:16 AM
The sex-offender thing doesn't seem too heinous in this case.

The mom being a drug-addicted prostitute whose crack shack is full of vomit and sh*t is definitely worse.

But someone on disability for depression is probably not an ideal parent either. I'm not hating on depressed people - I consider it an illness - but if it's untreated, it's going to affect the quality of life for any child that person is caring for.

I wasn't even considering the guy's weenie wagging or whatever it was that got him on the list. The injuries the child had sustained including one from being hit with a shoe and the parents inability to keep themselves conscious and not drug addled for a whole day at a time would be why I would have removed the child from that home.

The kid would be better raised by wolves.
