I don't even think these are the five best beers brewed in Oregon, let alone the United States.

/As an Oregonian, I'm proud of our local beer selection, but honesty demands that I acknowledge the beers of other states.

Yeah, as chosen by a wine expert. Beyond fail, though Dead Guy is good.

This. I wouldn't turn any of those beers down (and truthfully, I need to restock with another case of Session), but they're not the best beers in the country. As much as I love to pimp my Oregon beers, I'm not deluded enough to think that we control the good beer market.

But happy Oregon Craft Beer Month, anyway!

There are lots of wonderful beers available in limited markets, however for nationally available, I'm surprised Dogfish Head and Stone didn't at least get a mention.

/my fave is still ANYTHING from Real Ale in Blanco, TX

Dogfish Head makes some good beer, but a lot of them are too specialized for most people. Funky ingredients, strange tastes. Beer geek heaven. Beer newbie nightmare.

Cascade Brewing here in Portland is the same way--krieks, goses, sours. Excellent beer all around, but if you put it in front of a casual beer drinker, they'll probably turn up their nose.

I'll have to try the Widmer Hefeweizen. I'm a relative beer newbie being introduced to beer by a snob. It's an entertaining experience.

Him: "Here, you'll like this one."
Me: "Ugh, tastes AWFUL!"

I appreciate the sentiment in the article that Portland is top dog for craft breweries in the country (if not the world), but you're right. Widmer Hefe and Session Lager have no business on this list. Widmer just isn't that good, and Session is good for what it is (drinking a shiatton of beer), but they're not even in the conversation for the best beers in Oregon let alone the country.

Dogfish 90 minute still my favorite. Dead Guy was a good choice. I'm really into strong beers now though, so I'm not a good person to ask 'top 5'.

Has anyone had the Rogue Imperial IPA btw? Absolutely wonderful beer, had it from the tap a few months ago.

Not my favorites but I have picky due to a mild allergy to hops. The hoppier a beer is the less I can drink it. These are some great brewery's though. Rogue makes at least one or two that I really love like their Mocha Porter and I've been drinking the Full Sail summer seasonal the past few nights. I used to like Dead Guy but I think the last time it really set off my allergies but since I was drinking at Zeitgeist it could've been any number of pitchers that rolled past my face that night.

But since this is the internet and I'm supposed to be complaining, wtf?! No PranQster or Arrogant Bastard Ale?!

Before some Eurotrash spews out the inevitable "American beer is water" line, please be advised that American craft brews, even mass-produced ones like Samuel Adams are far more flavorful than much of the beer from Europe, though obviously it took us many more years to get to this point than the Europeans did. We brew much more than Budweiser, just as Europe brews much more than Heineken, which, by the way, is crap.

Yay a Fark beer snob thread, where Farkers talk about how the best beer is some relatively obscure beer that only the chosen few know about, and how anything else is just an insult to their palate and liver.

Sooooo, Deschutes Brewery is in Bend, Oregon and Rogue is in Newport, Oregon, so geography FAIL. Or sub-headline fail. Whatever.

Also, Widmer is good but their Heffy is a weird choice. Like choosing vanilla at Baskin Robbins.

Bridgeport IPA is one of the best beers in the country as judged by its consistent great flavor and very high drinkability for an IPA. I usually can't drink 11 IPAs because they are so hoppy.

Full Sail does some great beers, the least of which are those session lagers. Lagers?!

I think people like Dead Guy more for the packaging. Rogue is an underperforming, over priced, way overhyped brewery. Did I mention waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced? They think their stuff is liquid gold when it's really liquid, I don't know, raisin bran or something.

If you want a real Oregon beer, Terminal Gravity brewing kicks serious ass out in Enterprise, OR. Had the ESG (Extra Special Golden) at my wedding. Awesome. Most drinkable micro in the world.

BTW best lists are stupid and I wouldn't be surprised if this is a mass media troll.

Not my all-time favorite, but Full Sail's Session has been a good friend to me the past few sweltering Texas summers.

I had this discussion a couple of nights ago with one of my British friends. He's a beer snob, brews his own, world traveler, etc. and he contends that the depth and diversity of craft brewers in this country make it the best country for beer in the world.

Agreed.

Although Rogue Chipotle Ale is to die for IMO.

This years' Organic Brewers Fest last weekend was piss-poor. Best beer there was the Vanilla Bean Porter from Eliott Bay.

rohar: Dammit, I was gonna post that.

I haven't had that particular hefe, but I love them in general. I have one left from my last batch of homebrew, and it's going with me to the beach next week. Dead Guy is a personal favorite. Also, for nationally available beers, try this hotlinked, hoppy, crisp favorite:

In fairness, they both have brewpubs in Portland, and the writer acknowledges as much with regards to Deschutes. Technically, Session Lager isn't Portland either since Full Sail is about a half hour east in Hood River.
