Please correct me if I'm wrong (for I know nothing of beer), but my husband and I toured the Coors factory in Golden, CO a couple weeks ago and I thought they said they had merged with Miller.

But like I said, I don't know a thing about beer.

Good to know. On the tour they made it sound like Coors had outright bought the Miller company which in my mind would make Miller a US based company.

As a native Pennsylvanian who has lived here my whole life, I can say I'm not a big fan of Yuengling but it is certainly a popular go-to beer around here. Blue Moon or Killian's for me.

Please, please, please allow Yuengling to distribute in CT.

Also, the brewery/pub/restaurant that I frequent is busier than ever. We like to poke fun at people walking around with a Bud there. I mean, shiat man, you've got like 40 tasty, hand-made-on-the-premises beer and you're drinking Clydesdale piss?

Yuengling is like an ever-popular go-to brew. It's got good flavor, it's dependable, it's inexpensive, and here in Pennsylvania, it's as common as Bud Light. I don't recall ever visiting a bar here that didn't have Yuengling Lager. And when I'm out and about downtown, it's nice to interrupt the $11 martinis at Privado with a $2 (Yuengling) lager from Molly's.

It doesn't really compare to Troegs or ABC, but it isn't meant to. Yuengling cranks out a consistent, inexpensive lager that goes with anything. It's priced so that working-class families can afford to have something better than Coors at their 4th of July cookout without having to break the bank.

PROTIP: When visiting any given Pennsylvania bar, if you ask for a "lager", the bartender will assume you mean a Yuengling lager. If you ask for a "Yuengling Lager", he will know you are a tourist and will punch you in the face. Repeatedly.

Barbigazi: I don't understand what people see in Yuengling, it's a generic regional beer. It's alright but I wouldn't suggest it to anyone as a great beer.

It isn't meant to be the best beer ever brewed. It's good and it's inexpensive. It's arguably the best of the "cheap" beers. Given Pennsylvania's nature as a rural, blue-collar, low- to moderate-income state, Yuengling provides the state with affordable, fresh beer that tastes better than Bud Light, Coors, Keystone, or any of the other discount brands.

I know others have already said this, but I feel obligated.

In fact, I'm going to stop at ABC on the way home and pick up a six-pack.

2010-07-02 04:17:58 PM
Yuengling isn't craft beer. It is a regional brewery that mass produces beer.

Lager is better than other comparable offerings because:

1. It doesn't have that same bright yellow color.
2. It tastes better.
3. It costs the same or less.

long time yuengling drinker

it's not snob beer. in fact i usually buy darker stuff (though their porter is out of this world!) and have a case of it for 'drunk drinking'

it's by far a million times better than any of your millers or buds or any piss like that.

do remember before it got popular people would jump at it when they saw the name.

had a captain in georgia offer me $50 for a case we took down with us (of course i drank it not sold it). cool guy for an officer, he coulda confiscated it if he really wanted to.

I used to like Yuengling, but I've gotten snobbier, and I don't really drink it anymore. The thing is, local brews like Yuengling are becoming popular with the people who used to be all about the boring beer.

It's a good thing. The whole miller/bud thing is a remnant of prohibition (only the biggest survived), and the explosion of regional and craft brewing is a return to the natural order.

When I went to Kent State in Ohio, we'd take the 1hr drive into PA to get cases upon cases of Yuengling and we'd store them in a large grocery store fridge we had access too. It was always pretty neat to walk in the store, go behind the cooler, grab a case of Yuengling and walk out without paying. Quietly sold a few of them for well over market value too.

It's a solid, tasty lager and now that I'm living in NY, it's at my fingertips. I'm inspired now, inspired to buy a case of yuengling and get silly.

Yuengling could change the world. It is nearly as cheap as Busch. But you can drink it! It's actually pretty good. Busch beer guys - you don't have to suffer. You can actually have real beer for not much cash.

Yuengling is a bright star in the world of beer. A cheap beer that is actually good. I brought some to a fellow beer snob buddy of mine. I said "try this". He said "Hm not bad I guess." Then I told him how much it was for a case. At that moment he was enlightened. A cheap beer that actually tastes like beer.

It is one of my favorite parts of a trip to PA. I'm in OH - they don't sell it here. I'm going camping here in a week or two. Can't wait to stop by the big beer store and grab a couple of cases. Couple for the campsite and a couple to bring home.

Loves me some Yuengling.

I just picked up a 30-bottle case at the local distributor for $16.99. This was slightly less than a case of Coors Light, Bud Light, and damn near everything else in the store. Milwaukee's Best was $14.99, Gold Lager was $13.99, and there was a terrifying line of "Pennsylvania Style" beers for $9.99. FOR THE CASE.

You can not buy a better lager in this price range. Period. Not happening. You may be able to get close, but you won't get it nearly as fresh.

People who complain about Yuengling have unrealistic expectations. Comparing Yuengling Lager (the only Yuengling as far as I'm concerned) to any given craft micro is like comparing a Ford Focus to a Bugatti Veyron.

I'm not kidding. In fact, where I grew up (Berwick and the surrounding areas), if you walk into a bar and ask for a lager OTHER than a Yuengling, you will get some pretty nasty glares. They might let you get away with a Coors -- maybe -- but that's it.

For good beers I jump the border to Wisconsin to some good New Glarus beers like Spotted Cow and Fat Squirrel.

For a good cheap beer, Grain Belt Premium or Grain Belt Nordeast fit the bill. They are light, really good on hot summer days. They are best of their class but not the best overall.

Budweiser tastes like I imagine Clydesdale piss would. Yuengling is not spectacular beer, but it is respectable inexpensive Pilsner, and in fact there's half a case in my kitchen right now. (I drank the other half.) Perhaps even non-snobbish beer drinkers are figuring out that if a beer doesn't taste good there's not much point in choking it down.

It's funny Fark should mention Yuengling, because I'm currently pouring Yuengling into my belly while reading Fark. Roll on, Friday.

Also, the cross-country Yuengling / Fat Tire trade could be a lucrative business for the rogue distributor. Those who normally can't get one or the other due to geographic location tend to hold Yuengling or Fat Tire up as the ultimate score. I fall into the category of "I will punch a weary west-coast eastward traveler in his/her face and take the Fat Tire in his/her car trunk"

Also, for the locals, anyone else think Lager has been more ricey-tasting lately? Like closer to a PBR?

/further sampling of each will be required

However, we do have Boulevard and Schlafly, so I can't complain too much.

what makes yuengling so great is the value -- here in state college, for example, you can get a pitcher for 5 or 6 bucks, and it's a pretty good beer for that price. actually, there's a bar here that, because of hipsters, charges almost twice as much for PBR as for yuengling. (3.50 for a can of PBR, vs. 2.00 for a pint of lager)

As a native of SE PA, I swear this is true. In fact, shortly after I turned 21 and was out of state, I was embarassed when I found out that this isn't true everywhere.

Based on this fact I've created a philosophy, which is seems to be in harmony with this thread: Yuengling Lager is the reference Lager, against which all should be measured. Not saying it's the best, it just is "the Lager". If you're better then Yuengling, you're a good Lager, if you're worse, you're a bad Lager.

I miss Troegs and Victory, too. First time I puked due to drinking was when I finished a sixer of Mad Elf by myself. Good times.

That said, I appreciate having access to Rogue and New Belgium at the bars & grocery stores. Deschutes is also solid.

Yueng is the king of the cheap but good tasting beer. Plus durring a economic crater like we have price and taste is important. Yuengling wins handly on both fronts. It isn't a sam adams but isn't coors lite either. It's dependable. That's what people want dependibility on price and quality and Yuengling wins. Bud, Coors, Miller, the big three have to compete with the regional, craft, and micros. Coors gets serious points with Bluemoon. Pabts is the bastard 4th big brewer and the largest American owned brewery now. Pabst has always had a PR problem though it is pretty much the same americanized pilzner crap as the other 3. Yuengling makes an american lager- And they do it well. That's why they will only get bigger.

Yuengling tastes like a better Budweiser with some food coloring in it. Sam Adams is a much better choice for a "gas station lager". In fact, Budweiser American Ale(not lager) is even a better choice in overall beer quality.

Thunderpipes: chris2627: School me farkers, I'm in NOLA and I've never been a beer drinker, but I want to try some good beers. The only beer I've ever had was a bud light and it was god awful

Try a bunch, cheap, expensive, local, national, global, then see what you like. Don't take people's word for anything when it comes to beer, especially here on Fark, because it really doesn't matter and everyone likes different stuff.

Even I don't like Bud, and I am a Redneck.

Excellent advice. You could probably stay on the various Abita styles to get a taste for what's out there, they brew quite a few.
Just remember, beer is an acquired taste. If you run across a style you absolutely hate, don't rule it out forever. You may find another brew of that style that will have you reciting the timeless phrase about beer and God loving us etc.
Oh, the places you will go...
Parched I am, gotta do something about that.

Virginia has it.
(And yes, I was west of PA when I had it)

Yuengling is fairly available east of the Mississippi, I think, and in scattered places west of it.

I live in Michigan and my family has a connection that brings us several cases of Yuengling when he ventures to his second home in PA every once in a while. I wonder if I would love it as much if it was available in Michigan, but as long as our fridge is stocked I'm good.

It's true. If you ask for a "lager" in Philadelphia, you'll get a Yuengling. Conversely, if you ask for a Yuengling, you'll get a Yuengling lager (they make other brews).

True Story:
Yuengling has been handed down from father to son for generations. Each son has to BUY it from their father. Dick Yuengling, had a bunch of daughters. No son to hand it down to. At the time, only people from Pennsylvania knew about the beer. There was big article in the Philly Inquirer about that years ago.
But what happened was that the daughters went to college, figured out how to not only run the business but also how to expand it and get it past that Pennsylvania border.

End result, I have Yeungling in Florida and I am damn happy about that. Life is good.

Now if only one of the daughters was looking for a husband...

I'm drinking Spaten Optimater right now so I'm getting a kick out of this reply...and a hell of a buzz. This shiat is %7.2.

As far as beer is concerned try as much as you can. You will start to learn as you go which recipes you like and which ones you don't. For me, I don't like pilsners. I like almost everything else though. If you're in NOLA I gotta agree with the guy that recommended Abita. Turbodog and purple haze are very good but work your way through them all.

I drank Yuengling long before they had the lager line Chesterfield, Porter sometimes, but mostly Premium, It was a decent "cheap" brew - and i felt like i was helping my local economy. (central PA resident) I actually kinda liked the Yuengling beers - Then Lager came out - and that was my regular bot - for quite awhile.

About 10 years ago, on a business trip, the hotel bar had Newcastle Brown Ale on tap - I was instantly converted. I am hopelessly addicted to that stuff, there is ALWAYS at a minimum a 12 pak in my house on any given day.

The weird thing tho...now Yuengling Lager tastes like hobo piss strained through Rosie O'Donnell's panties - really
It pisses me off, my family and friends still give me the occasional case of Lager and i think what the hell am i gona do with this shaite?

/Newcastle Brown - changed my taste in beers

Two best days of my life:

1. The day Yuengling bought a Stroh's plant in Florida
2. The day it shipped its first bottle

Cans are great and doesn't mean anything to the beer inside. I wish more breweries would use them.

I toured the oldest brewery in America earlier this year. For those that have mentioned wanting Yuengling, here is what the tour guide said:

- The current owner has no plans to expand the regions they currently serve and it will most likely stay that way until he relinquishes control.

- When one of the daughters takes over (no sons and YES it is a family run business still) the next Yuengling expansion is planned for Ohio and New England.

BTW, I love the beer snob thread. I classify beers in these ways:

Pounding beer: One I want to drink all night, get hammered, and not get sick of the taste. Yuengling fits this requirement and is better than the alternatives.

Sipping beer: Stouts, Bocks, IPAs (like super bitter Hop Wallop, Hop Infusion). Too much of this makes my toungue sad. These beers are beers to be taken in moderation.

Cheap beer: What college students drink. I'm out of college so I'm out of this category. Bud, Miller, Natty Ice, Keystone, Meister Brau et al fit in here.

2010-07-03 12:54:19 AM
foreman3: Be careful of what you wish for. Those are the only places you can buy beer (OK, you can get a 6-pack from a resturant). But no beer in supermarkets or WAWAs

They are getting wise to this, though. Big supermarkets with a sit-down food area are starting to get 6-pack licenses. Their prices can't compete for stocking up (and you'd have to make a couple trips through the register anyway) but it is starting to get a little easier to try weird beers.

I AGREE! Something happened to Lager a few years ago (roughly, may only have been a year or so) and it hasn't tasted the same since. I used to order lager (yes, we do order it that way, at least in the philly area) as a standby to whatever I wanted to drink that the bar didn't have, and I've stopped because the taste is going south. That's not to say Yuengling is horrible or anything, I've just been disappointed recently.

Sometimes it's great to be a Pennsylvanian. Yuengling is one thing we can be proud of.

I'm off the buy a couple of boxes of Yuengling in about 26 minutes.

No, really, not kidding. The beer distributor opens at 8:00 and I like to do my beer shopping early in the day. If I wait until later, I may not be able to get my stash home without having bums trying to steal it, or panhandlers/teen age boys begging me for bottles of beer.

Yuengling is older than both Miller and Coors. It is the oldest brewery of beer in the United States.

They aren't the biggest, not even close, but they certainly survived prohibition.

Some bars, for who knows why, categorize beers as import or domestic...when what they really mean is fancy or generic. For that reason, you will commonly see stuff like Sierra Nevada and other craft beers listed as import.

Putting Yuengling in that category is fraud, it is domestic in origin, style, and price.
