All in a day's work, my son!

This is all Clinton (and Carter's) fault. Also the fault of the American people for electing a black man President.

We forced them to do this!

There are a significant number of Americans who pay attention to absolutely nothing in politics except the (R) or (D) after a candidate's name on the ballot.

Or a realist. looking at the direction this country is going, I think we're in for some seriously bad trouble in our future...and a lot of our problems had their root causes back a couple/few decades.

Why try to solve this broken system? Social security won't actually start paying out more than it takes in (i.e. operate in the red) until way out in...oh, wait--THIS YEAR. Not 2016. NOW.

For what it's worth, I agree...but I don't think our leaders have the capacity to actually make the changes we need. Republican and Democrat alike - they just don't have the balls to stand up and do what needs to be done.

Yeah, but the True Believers on fark don't want to believe that Social Security is insolvent. believe me, I've tried to convince them. they just ignore the math. it's past the point of mere politics and into the realm of pathological behavior.

Were taxes really that high in the stone age? That's something Fred and Barney never really talked about.

I'd guess the larger problem was the lack of supplemental restraint systems in those cars - that, and the neighbor keeping a sabretooth tiger as a pet.

Incidentally "The Flintstones" is roughly as accurate as the rest of that original post.

we could even have fixed our cash flow problems with SS (the baby boomers are something of a funding problem) but again - nobody in D.C. wanted to open that can of worms. So we'll make useless cosmetic changes, steal money from other programs to patch the system from year to year and hope that a miracle occurs before we implode.

we simply cannot continue to pay for all our various programs. The war on drug, the war on terror, social security, health care reform, various/sundry pork barrel spending projects, the war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, bank bailouts, wall street funding projects...the list goes on and on. sooner or later something has to break.

I agree. Let's stop all of those options that start with "The war", and cut military funding by 50%. Problem solved, and we'll STILL have the largest military budget in the world.

If it's any consolation, when he gets to 70, that back-breaking work will likely actually break his back around 68 or so, so he'll get to collect disability as well.

Who on the left is claiming that the GOP wants to take away SS? I mean, other than those who are simply quoting Angle's own words about how she wants to privatize SS or targeting other GOPers who really do want to get rid of SS... they do exist in the GOP.

On the other hand, yesterday we had a thread (new window) about Boehner's SS age increase proposal. Admittedly it's not a long thread, but not a single one of we evil Fark libs even disagreed with his proposed age increase, though one Farker opined that his SS would pay for his subscription to "Barely Legal". He seemed pleased about that though... silver lining and all.

An age increase is very likely going to be necessary in the future.

Couldn't agree more. This debacle we are in is 3 decades in the making. I have zero confidence there is the will in Congress to make tough decisions though. We are going to have to implode before anyone has the balls to break the bad news to the 80% of Americans that REFUSE to EVER hear any bad news.

I think back to Carter's "malaise" speech and how right on the money he was. Problem was, you can't tell the citizenry the truth.

It's fearmongering when Democrats take what Republicans say at face value.

It's really their fault for believing the GOP.

Remember, it take two to lie. One to lie, and the other to listen.

Wait, wait, wait. Fark Libs have been preaching for years that the WaPo was a terrible news source to cite, and the Kos' link to Boner's 70 yr. old retirement age brilliance was linked directly to nothing related to that very argument?

Duhhhh.

Tanning-bed man said that he felt the retirement age should be raised to 70...20 years from now. Where's that mentioned? It's not. Anywhere.

Please, for the love of labia, cite something relevant to the argument you're trying to make. Is it that impossible to ask the left for that simple request?

The rest seems accurate, aside from the left subverting the voting process for unemployment, trying to rush a bill through yesterday only to be shot down, and now trying to get just a simple majority vote on the matter. Epic fail there, for sure.

2010-06-30 01:47:30 PM
How about this... Social Security retirement age raised to 70 for those who will turn 70 in 2035. Starting in 2015, anyone who is 76 or older gets boatlifted to Cuba, kinda like a reverse Mariel.

Social Security's solvency gets secured, and old people get a cruise... it's a win-win!

You missed my point, but perhaps I did not make it clearly enough. Allow me to try again.

Perhaps, since they hold the positions right now, if the Democratic Leadership was showing some fortitude and actual leadership and had the brass to publicly and repeatedly spank the opposition then certain members of the opposition would stop behaving like spoiled little arseholes and we wouldn't have them spouting BS in public.

People still want leadership and in the absence of true leaders it seems they will tolerate loud idiots, but not forever. Sadly, for the time being, we have too many of the latter and not enough of the former.
