Awesome, veto some more.

Wouldn't some sort of microscope or binocular device be more dignified than what is depicted in that picture?

He'll likely set a record. Former Gov. George Pataki issued scores of vetoes in some of his final budget battles with lawmakers, but he never approached anything close to 6,900.

The traditional New York budget writing method has the governor and two legislative leaders work out a secret deal, leaving little need for a veto.

In my state the two legislative leaders work out a deal and the governor vetoes stuff, maybe on the order of 100 items rather than thousands.

Nah, we're still trying to unsee the mental image of the previous governor plowing away at some hooker in nothing but black socks.

Wow that is....WOW. I agree with Kronicfeld. There has to be some other way he could be reading that.

We're not sure if he's vetoing or sleeping, actually. We just wait until he's finished.

I like when politicians know they aren't running for reelection. This guy is burning every bridge he can and raping his opponent's grandmothers with the smoldering planks.

Exactly. Good for him.

Is he trying to read the page or just sign it? If he's just signing, can't an aid put the pen in the right spot and him just sign from memory? Does he have to watch each letter being formed?

For Christ's sake, I can sign my name with my eyes closed, without hunkering over some document. Attention hore.

Really, it's the only way he could do what he is doing.

They forced him to basically not run, because ever since he became governor (almost said 'elected') he's been trying to actually balance the state budget. The problem is that there are too many special interests fighting for their little pieces of turf. It's mainly unions, both public employee unions and unions in jobs like teaching and nursing.

I don't like a lot of Paterson's ideology, but I have to say I admire him for trying to reign in runaway spending at the state level, and for having the balls to actually do it.

I suspect that Governor Cuomo Jr., who has been anointed and all but elected, will look like a pussy in comparison.

/WTF do teachers need a union? It's not like a coal face is going to collapse on them, or they might lose an arm because a machine doesn't have a proper guard, or something.

At first I thought he was doing a line of coke to help him through the vetoing process.

F(my version of)TFA:

Patterson will be using an aide, known only by his street name "Peanut", who will present every 17th document to the governor with a modest rail of coke prepared.

When asked for a comment the governor replied, "DUDE! WE SHOULD TOTALLY GO PLAY LASER TAG!!!".

Spending is scented with lavender, and revenue is scented with taffy. You can't use a tactile point, because of OSHA regulations.

Forced him not to run? Are you kidding? They forced him to attempt to use his authority in an attempt to obstruct justice for an ex-con? They forced him to commit perjury? Sure thing there. How this schmuck is still in office, I'll never understand.

I think he scented up the documents while he was signing them. Something akin to a fish smell.

My grand aunt was almost blind.

She had some sort of small video camera on some feet hooked up to her tv which showed whatever she pointed at showed up HUGE.

She'd kind of tilt it to get her hand under it to sign cards and other things.

And that was almost twenty years ago, I imagine they have fancier stuff now.

This. There is no money left to shuffle around any more. We are broke, and yet many people in our State government (and their constituents) seem to think that we can just wish more money to appear. Until people get that through their thick skulls I say veto early and often.

Anyone else kind of hope that Richard Ravitch sticks around?

He had a really tight plan for working to fix New York before every politician decided to flat-out lie about his plan, proclaiming it was "Borrowing" and saying they were against it, mocking the guy who's saved the City and the State several times, then going ahead and - ha - borrowing.

Screw Ravitch.

He rolled out this plan to save the MTA by proposing that free NYC bridges be tolled, plus higher vehicle registration fees and adding a payroll tax that applies equally to an everyday subway rider and a farmer in Millerton who's never been to the city.

Which would've been fine in an everybody-has-to-take-a-bite-of-the-shiat-sandwich way, but surprise, surprise - when the legislature got through with it, the NYC tolls disappeared and the registration fees and upstate payroll tax stayed, and Ravitch was perfectly fine with that.

So I get to pay an extra $150 a year to subsidize trains I never ride (it's 30 miles to the nearest Metro North station), plus my bi-annual registration went from $22 to $120...all to bail out an MTA that got caught red-handed keeping two sets of books and hands its retirees bullshiat disability pensions without a second glance.

Ravitch is just another one of Shelly Silver's toadies.

As for the state GOP, they're seventeen different flavors of useless, stuffed into a gigantic rancid pita of corruption and sleaze. Fark them, too.
