This is all you really need to know.

They opened for Radiohead in 2001 on the Kid A tour. That's the only time I saw them. They were alright.

Came for this, leaving satisfied.

They're OK. Were sorta popular for a hot minute.

Beta Band was OK in the 90s.

Beta Band sounds good on an album with a star producer.

Live on stage, having to try to actually play the instruments?

...notsomuch.

2010-06-30 03:13:27 AM
never did see them live...they broke up weeks before they were supposed to play ACL in 2004/5(?)...i do love beta band albums though.(yes, thank you nick hornby) those bastards were pretty far ahead of the curve as far as im concerned. liked them much more than blur. but yeah, he does sound like a whiney fuxxor. so i guess....STFU and get a good band again?

I disagree. Those guys blew my mind when I saw them live, but I'm a huge fan.

Meh, I was trying to find a way to defend the guy, but there was so much more going on at this 2010 Glastonbury festival that dude really does come off just being bitter about Albarn.

Man, way too many good acts going on to really biatch about farking Gorillaz and their mediocrity.

Love me some Beta Band. Saw them a handful of times and they always delivered.

The Three E.P.'s is one of my most favorite albums.

Until reading this story I would have sworn upon many various deities that Albarn was the frontman for Beta Band and Blur, Gorillaz, The Good The Bad and The Queen, and several others (Stones, Floyd, Radiohead, Beatles)

Brits, they all sound alike. amirite?

Damn, I'd forgotten the Beta Band used to exist. Why are they asking this guy his opinion now?

And while the band was good, he was always kind of a douche. I read several interview/feature articles on BB where he was involved in the capacity of staring into space and refusing to talk about anything, giving answers of "yes", "no" or "don't know" at best.

It can be rather difficult to properly articulate responses when you are completely obliterated on hard, hard drugs.

What is this?

(It's the Beta Band)

It's great!

(I know)

Their bass player is by far the best member.

Did anyone who is a huge fan of The Beta Band listen to The Aliens - Astronomy for Dogs? Thoughts?

"Needles In My Eyes" is one of my favorite tunes, but their material was way too inconsistent. Same with the partial reincarnation with "The Aliens" and the album Astronomy for Dogs. Few less bong hits, a few more time devoted to studio work, and they could have been a great band.

I would say I'm a BB fan, not a huge fan. Heard The Aliens, found it to be a bit ADD. Seems like you need a stone junkie to steer the ship, in that case anyway.

I saw The Beta Band open for Radiohead during the Kid A tour in Chicago, then at St. Andrews in Detroit a few years later. They are amazing live and were probably the most underrated band of the late 90's early 00's.
He does sound like a whiny twat in that article though.
S'too bad.
Also, the aliens are pretty good.

A bit more funky, but the same problem of about 3 throwaway songs per album. I picked up the album off Amazon Marketplace for 0.99 (I know, I'm the last person who still buys discs). One of the tunes was featured on the "21" soundtrack, which is really not bad at all.
