Wait, let's just practice the entire 'freedom of religion' thing.

Too bad we're not allowed freedom from religion in the US, should we choose it.

As an adolescent, I confessed to a priest that I had committed a 'Sin of the Flesh' alone. He admonished me and told me I was supposed to keep my seed for my future wife. I told him not to worry, I had 3 jars full of the stuff at home.

I_Can't_Believe,

I hope I'm not going off topic here, but Onan was smoten not because he spilled his seed on the ground, but because he intentionally didn't get Tamar pregnant which was the specific command he recieved from Judah, which was presumed to be a prophesy from God, THEREFORE, Onan was disobeying God (the lesson here would be "Don't disobey God", not "Don't masterbate" or "Don't pull out" or "Don't have sex for recreation").

It's important to know the context of quotes, song lyrics, Bible verses, ANYTHING before you use them as evidence for or against any argument. It's certainly more convenient to repeat things we've heard on obsure radio shows or read in independent editorials, but knowing information first hand is most often the best way to go.

Never has so much guilt, self-loathing, and hatred of your fellow man fit into such a small package.

I think Kevin Smith should make another shiatty movie about it.

Yeah, that would make a difference.

PS I was spewing the agnostic view of atheism/anti-theism. You're demonstrating the relevant intelligence involved in differentiating them.

What a great time to become an atheist.. or Satanist.. or a Jew.

(No i'm not associating Jews with Satanists.. just providing alternatives to Catholics)

Oh wait, I forgot, I'm a reverend. Maybe I can marry them =P

It really gladdens my heart to see that the Cat-Lick Church is being exclusionary. Actually, I wish they were even more severe. If only they would be exclusionary to the point of excluding the entire human race...ahhh, then J.R. "BoB" Dobbs might control the world someday...

2003-06-01 03:35:31 PM
The Catholic Church holds that the purpose of marriage is to procreate and to further develop love between the spouses, pretty much the same qualifications placed on sex.

Including sex between priests and altar boys?

Catholic School girls are the hottest and naughtiest wenches...yummmm

2003-06-01 03:37:43 PM
The funniest thing I've ever seen was a nun talking about sex during week 5 of marriage class. Not that I'm against catholics or anything but people kept asking me how someone who has never been married should tell me about marriage.

2003-06-01 03:38:00 PM
Sigh. I'm having trouble getting married, myself. I'm Jewish, and my boyfriend's Catholic. We can't get married in my synagogue, or his church. No rabbi I've approached will touch this with a 10 ft. pole. I think we're going to have to either find a very liberal clergy man/woman, or get married by a JP.
I think this is all bullshiat. If two people love each other, it shouldn't matter what they believe, or if they want kids.
The only thing this really accomplishes is encouragement of intolerance.

2003-06-01 03:38:21 PM
The church has rules - they're more important than what you "feel" is right - deal with it. They have been around a lot longer thatn you and they will be around when you are gone. Why don't people understand that?

Why do you think so many priests are called "Father"? Thy rod and thy staff, indeed!

2003-06-01 03:39:06 PM
I'm confused about all of this Onanistic seed spilling malarkey. I've never had sex with a real woman and have learned everything I know about sex from my extensive Ron Jeremy DVD collection.

From my careful study of these movies, I thought you were supposed to withdraw just before ejaculation and jizz all over you partner's face. Have I got the wrong end of the stick?

No, not at all. For instance, should an ass-baby ensue from the anal copulations of Fr. MacDuff and Timmy the Altar Boy, it doesn't have to be baptized in to the Roman Catholic Church.

2003-06-01 03:41:19 PM
anti-theists are rabid demagogues who revel in a deep-seated hatred of religion.

Some of the most elaborate and excruciatingly painful torture devices of all time were created by Catholics and other religous fanatics. Can you really blame people for having these feelings?

Elite-mrp,

hey, our officiant had one of those thingies!

Anne.Uumellmahaye,

sorry, just poking fun at the relevance of a piece of mythology some 2500+ years afterward... didn't mean for anyone to ACTUALLY take my jibes seriously

The Catholic Church is amazingly easy to bash.

I'll just be gentle, and say they should stop their opposition to birth control, and for Christ's sake, actually DO SOMETHING about priests molesting boys..

We already have about 5.9 billion too many people, after all.

Guenevere:

If both of your religions are so darned intolerant, why not blow off both of them and become Universalists or, even better, Subgenii? Instead of a church, why not get married in a beautiful garden, exchanging vows you and your Significant Other personally wrote?

Any sex outside of marriage is wrong according to Catholic dogma. Priests having sex with the altar boys isn't common and the church doesnt condone it. Priest and alter boy sex only seams like a common thing because of media attention, just as shark attacks and little white girl kidnappings arent on the rise.

Zippythechimp: The church has rules - they're more important than what you "feel" is right - deal with it. They have been around a lot longer thatn you and they will be around when you are gone. Why don't people understand that?

Well, let's see. By that logic, pagan religions have been around longer than the Christian church (including the Catholic sect), and will be around long after the Christian churches die off, so their morality must be even more correct than the Christian ones!

2003-06-01 03:43:36 PM
Sex is supposed to be an act of love between husband and wife. If it were ONLY for procreation, well, we'd be just like the animals.

What if both parties were sterile? Then what?

Catholicism=hypocrisy. The priests can go ahead and have sex with boys, but God forbid a married couple has sex....

2003-06-01 03:45:51 PM

I think Zippy's point was that the Catholic Church has held that one of the goals of marriage is procreation for over a thousand years. This would lead most people to think that the church just might have a problem with marrying you if you don't intend to have kids. Much like if I went to a Hindu ceremony with steak.

Church rules change all the time. Remember "no meat on Friday"?

How about the one that if you mentioned you were Catholic, you were lynched?

I have a rule, too. I refuse to be brainwashed by some Bronze-Age superstition. Heck, I hereby ex-communicate the Pope, all cardinals ('cept Cardinal Sin), archbishops, bishops, rooks, crooks, monks, monkeys, nuns, alls, Devils' Advocates, exorcists, and the whole freakin' byzantine insanity known as the Cat-Lick Church from my religion. So there...

Not that I'm a 'recovering Catholic' who's trying to exorcise the demons of religion with marijuana, saracasm, and hedonism...

Psycat the whole Byzantine insanity would be the Orthodox Church. Roman insanity would be the Catholic Church. The judges will also accept Latin insanity.

I think you mean 'affected'.

The Inquisition is dead and gone now but it's an example of what religion can drive people to. They thought they were doing God's work. There are cults all over the place doing unspeakable things in the name of a higher power. And have you forgotten about Muslims? Saudi Arabia senteces drug dealers to DEATH. Does that sound reasonable to you?

Dandamanfl:

No no! THey are still in business under the name
Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
, run by the eminently repugnant Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. They aren't so infamous any more because no decent or civilized government on the face of the Earth will let these guys have any real power. See how well separation of Church and State can work?

2003-06-01 03:57:03 PM
Thales, I meant 'byzantine' in the sense of 'overly elaborate and complicated' more than in the sense of 'Byzantium'... However, I'll grant you a plenary indulgence for your misunderstanding ;)

2003-06-01 03:57:09 PM
So, out of ignorance.... is this "anti-theist" movement a new thing?

Are people really that uptight about someone else's religion that they have become prosteletory about it?
