Personally I think the better conversion would be to a black disk-like hard object and make the playing surface much thicker and ice coated. Oh, and give them sticks.

But that's just me :)

FIFA is still recovering from the trauma of allowing games to be played at night, with artificial light.

That wouldn't improve the game subby, that would make it boring.

In the interest of being open minded, and because I'm disinclined to think that a billion fans are all morons, I tried watching the World Cup again this year.

Damn is that ever boring. I like televised golf better, and I only watch that to start a weekend nap.

Really? They're considering doing it right? I thought I had heard they were instead going to censor the replays played for the audience.

They can use modern technology to cut down on injuries by putting pads and helmets on the spectators.

Maybe they could ride on horses and smack a smaller, harder ball around. Ot they could carry the ball around in a small net on the end of a stick. Or any of the other 10 varieties of 'soccer' that are for some reason called something else.

2010-06-29 02:11:41 PM
Goddammit are we really having another debate on what soccer is called? There are a ton of sports called football and American rules and association rules were formed at about the same time (I have no idea about Australian rules) so which ever one of these is more popular in your country is going to be called football. Oh and another thing: it's called football because it's played on foot (not horseback) with a ball (no a ball doesn't have to be round).
So can we actually talk about the merits of replay in soccer now instead of rehashing this tired stick?

Hey jackmonkeys, if you don't like soccer, ignore it. I don't get the need to bash something you have no interest in.

I grew up playing baseball and basketball and love NFL, MLB, and MLS.

I have no interest in NASCAR or tennis, but I don't go out of my way to bash those sports or the people that like them.

I enjoy both sports, but I must say that soccer players who dive are filthy cheats, and American football players who can only build up the energy to play either offense/defense/special teams are lazy sods.

will never understand the hatred between the two sports. i love futbol and i love american football. i'm not looking to go all rodney king here, but why can't we all get along? if you don't like soccer don't watch it. christ. yelling about how much soccer (or "armored wankball", "handegg") sucks, you aren't going to talk anyone off of their sport.

i don't dig Aussie Rules Football. I don't get Irish Hurling or that weird GAA game they play. I don't care for NHL. so i don't invest time in each.

i guess what i'm saying is LEAVE SOCCER / AMERICAN FOOTBALL ALONE! ALL YOU GUYS WANT IS MORE MORE MORE MORE! ANYONE WHO TRIES TO MESS WITH SOCCER / AMERICAN FOOTBALL HAS TO DEAL WITH ME! I MEAN IT! SOCCER / AMERICAN FOOTBALL IS SUFFERING RIGHT NOW! FIFA SUCKS ASS, AND THE NFL SEASON IS STILL MONTHS AWAY? WHERE'S THE PROFESSIONALISM IN THAT? LEAVE SOCCER / AMERICAN FOOTBALL ALONE!

Most of the soccer players away from the play aren't even jogging... they're just standing there or walking. You've got 22 people on the field and 3 of them are doing anything but walking at one time.

That's still more than in American football where 1 player is doing all the work, the rest just stare at that player.

I gave soccer a chance this year (and I'll still watch the games if they're on this weekend) but it really does come off as a watered down, slower version of ice hockey without the contact. And since the field is so huge the back-and-forth action doesn't happen as often or as quickly. Soccer certainly has its bursts of exciting action, but they are few and far between in each game. I'll stick with playoff hockey, the world can keep soccer.

Never ceases to amaze me that people will continue arguing about this as if the debate could actually be won.

It's subjective. You either prefer one form of sport over another. You may as well be arguing of which genre of music is "better".

Also don't soccer players wear shin guards because that's where they get tackled at? Now you understand why football players wear padding all over. That was easy wasn't it?

Not really, once the play is in motion, most players just stand around. If it's a pass, the receiver and the corner are running. The rest just stare.

Now I'm making a generalization, as were you about soccer. At least, I would assume you were, nobody's that stupid.

Thanks. I don't like looking at either of those... although I'd say they were comparable. I'm sure I can find more severe injuries in Football rather than Soccer, but I get the heebie-jeebies looking at pictures of legs facing the wrong way and such.

I'm sorry, did you just call a guy who sits there and gets hit every 20 seconds for 15 years, and at one point addicted to pain killers, and played with multiple broken bones during play more of a pussy than some guy who once had his head bleed?

Just checking. Because if you did, you fail at analogy time.

I would watch soccer if they did two things:

1. Add an additional ref.

2. No offsides once the ball is within 20 yards of the goal.

2010-06-29 02:28:03 PM
I'd rather see the field size cut down and covered with ice. The players would use these things called sticks to move a small rubber puck-like object around.

Who am I kidding? This would never work. Third world nations cannot afford the equipment and ice time. That's why "sports" like soccer and basketball are popular with the poor. It involves having one ball, kind of like Hitler.

Pff. So what if he starts every single game for years and years in a sport that usually breaks the people who play in his position LONG before. That guy got a wicked scratch!
