There were a couple of Swatches with spiral and concentric ring patterns that could create dizzying optical illusions.

worst.fad.ever. If you were lucky enough not to have experienced, imagine every hipster you ever came across asking if you knew what time it was in ____________ (insert foreign city) just before he smuggly checks one of the three, $80, POS swatches on his arm. I still wanna punch people for that.

Swatches and Frogskins, teaching the valuable lesson about a fool and his money.

I had both but I never learned the lesson.

I have pictures of me wearing Jams, a Swatch, and dear god help me, one of those white sport coats from Miami Vice (with sleeves pushed up).

It is a miracle that I grew up without getting cancer from all the pastels.

I honestly can't imagine a reason other than visiting North Korea that I'd ever have a use for a watch again.

Had I not given up watches (can't have two time-telling items on me lest one be off by a few seconds) I'd still be wearing Swatches. I've had a couple dozen over the years. My favorite was called Campana from 1994. It was an analog 24-hr movement which screwed with other people which was part of the enjoyment.

Also have the ICQ Swatch, which helps bridge the 80's/90's gap well.

Till the bands broke? So, like 3 months? Bands weren't the problem, it's when the plastic casing breaks where the bands attach, then it's off to the Great Cigar Box in the Sky.

It's surprising to think I didn't ever own a Swatch. But I did bust out with the corduroy Op walkshorts, and was known for an excellent collection of skinny ties, so I have that going for me.

Seriously, though, folks, Swatches were pretty harmless and not all bad-looking, for a fashion fad. C'mon, which is uglier--Swatch or parachute pants? Swatch or Crocs? Swatch or Uggs? No contest.

Swatch with matching Crocs while wearing parachute pants.

Huh. Fancy that.

I remember the first time I saw a Swatch. Sitting across from a guy in a bar, he was wearing this cheap-looking plastic timepiece. I go "huh - what's that then? Looks kind of fragile." He just raises an eyebrow, takes off the watch, and flings it across the room. It hits the wall, then hits the floor. He looks at me and says "well, go on then." I go retrieve the watch - nary a scratch, and still ticking. I was coloured impressed. Would have made a great viral marketing campaign, if such things had existed back then.

/feel old now
//still don't like Swatches, as such, too plain fugly

All this swatch love here, is making me think I was the only teenager in the 80s who did not like Swatches.

/wore a 40s Bulova watch I bought at a swapmeet. Lasted for years.

Swatch, Bugle Boy pants, pegged so you could see the paisley print, cardigan sweater, collared, bolo tie, hi top Reeboks or penny loafers. Awww yeah...

I never got any brand named stuff when I was young. Not for lack of wanting, mind you, my mother just refused to buy that stuff. I thank her for it now. I could care less about brand names and just wear what I like.
