The banner is a summertime fixture in Salt Lake City and a favorite of fans, who were saddened to hear about the crash.

Poor banner. How will the residents of SLC move on with their lives without it?

Rule number one if you stall on a banner pickup is to not release the banner until you recover from the stall. After you get the wing flying again, then you can release it and clean out your underwear.

I wonder what kind of aircraft it was? From the video still it looks like it has pre-WW11 stars on it, although they are quite small. Saw an airplane flying a Geico banner in St. Louis last month at the drag races. Flying into the wind, the little plane looked like it wasn't moving it was so slow.

maybe elevation is the proper word.
or maybe it's a secret message to al-queda(sp) operatives. The word "altitude" might have changed the orders in the message. Or maybe "altitude" was the one they should have used.

WTF? You want to hold on to the banner to keep the wreckage from going too far?

When you stall you want to lower the nose to unload the wing and get as much as power as you can at the same time. I don't see how hanging on to the weight and drag of the banner is going to help out any...or does it help get the nose down?

Not a pilot, but my understanding off the laws of physics says that the sudden loss of the weight of the banner would cause the nose to rise even further, increasing the stall. Now I would never have thought of that without thinking it through, but it makes a lot of sense.

I've been telling my buddy at work that that plane was going to crash one day soon... it's been pulling a banner that is way too big for that airframe.
I put the blame on Mame.

What it does is help reduce any yawing moment that can lead to a spin. Recovering from a stalled condition with a banner or even billboard attached isn't really a big deal. If you do it right, you can recover with about 100' feet of altitude (or somewhere around there).

Also, the drag and weight from the banner allows the airplane to fly slower than without. The reason is, you will use more power from the engine to maintain altitude with the banner than without. Less power, equals less airflow over the wing coming from the engine. When flying behind the power curve, this is a nice thing to have.

When I was towing banners, my airspeed indicator would not even be indicating because I was moving through the air so slow. Without the banner, at the same power setting, I would be doing about 85mph.

one of my co-workers in college (at the pizza joint) did this during summer vacations. He did it again the summer after he graduated. Crashed and died doing almost exactly the same thing as this pilot. He was a good kid, everybody liked him. That was 20 something years ago, I hadn't thought about that in quite a while.

R.I.P. Peter.
