Party Boy: The Office of Special plans is the "font" so to speak on the intelligence, and that is not Addington.

sigh, you still don't get it, research the Office of Legal Counsel and you will learn that no one in the Executive Branch takes a schnit without the okay from them.

Somehow I've hit a key or a combination of keys and my internet explorer has gone full-screen. (ie There are no task-bars at either the top or bottom of my screen, I can't access my favorites with a mouse-click, there is no "refresh" button to click (I rarely use F5), and I had to navigate to Fark by typing "Fark" into google (which I could only access in the first place because it's my home-page))

I've tried rebooting my PC a couple of times, but it's made no difference.

I have a theory that there is actually nothing wrong with Cheney, he just does a press release and visits a hosipital to get all you Cheney Haters all worked up into a frenzy. Looking at juat a few of the posts, it seems to be working. In fact, it wouldn't suprise me that before the night is out, that 5-6 Cheney haters may infact work them selves up into such a hate filled frenzy that their hearts don't give out.

What a cleaver bastard that Dick Cheney is.

Let's see your attempt then that's better? It's actually pretty good because it's not too over the top and it's conceivable that someone would say that.

Is it just me or do the troll raters around here usually have it the opposite of what it should be? Most 0/10s I see are more like 8/10 and when anyone says 10/10 it's usually way too obvious to be taken seriously.

brainiac-dumdum: sigh, you still don't get it

This smells like special pleading. That the office of special plans "produced discredited intelligence analysis tying Saddam to al Qaeda and hyping the WMD threat" is not under any dispute. That the "neoconservative braintrust that has guided Bush foreign policy" is also not under any dispute. Addington does not have a chief role in either. See sources above.

Again, research the Office of Legal Counsel (new window). The decisions made there are binding on all executive agencies.

If the OLC says you can't do it, it doesn't happen.

The lawyers that work there do not make the pages of the NYT or the WSJ, they are not on the Sunday news shows, but they are the central nervous system for the executive branch, and Addington's position and his close relationship w/ Cheney are responsible for a lot of the trouble our nation stepped in.

I know, my point is that w/out the okay from the OLC and David Addington, the Office of Special Plans never would have existed.

One of the more interesting things about Woodward(?)'s book is on how Cheney changed ideologically after 9/11. Hilarously, he gave his iraq invasion as a quagmire speech from the AEI. Cheney had to resign from the Jewish Institute of Strategic Affairs after election.. but Cheney did not align with the neocons on Iraq and Iran until after 9/11. At that point, it was just about a shared ideology and plan between Cheney and the neocons.

This is cart before the horse. David Addington was executing the policies of a man newly following a neoconservative ideology. Wolfowitz and Feith were not babysat by Addington (or Shulsky for that matter.)

no, but the OLC had already crafted the extensive legal groundwork and justifications for their work.

I'm not seeing it. Though, you clearly have a man who is following ideology he was at odds with during the 1990's. Addington was not babysitting or overriding members like Feith or Wolfowitz, who were central to the construction of the neoconservatives.

Party Boy: Vice-president Dick Cheney and defense secretary donald rumsfeld, who would be better described as american nationalists than as neoconservatives.

people close to Cheney say 9/11 was what pushed him into the crazy neocon territory, but yeah, for a long while he distrusted the Neocons

Party Boy: Though, you clearly have a man who is following ideology he was at odds with during the 1990's. Addington was not babysitting or overriding members like Feith or Wolfowitz, who were central to the construction of the neoconservatives.

again, the OLC is responsible for providing the legal guidlines for the Executive Branch. If the OLC says it is illegal and cannot be done, it will not be done.

Any major decision made in/by the executive branch has to have the approval from and legal justification for prepared by the OLC.

There is a long and interesting story about Addington and Cheney and their wily ways in the post 9/11 policy crafting.

I know, but Addington was really the only person (besides Yoo) known to be ideologically sympathetic in the OLC. Addington was specifically tapped to write these opinions because he was known to agree with that point of view. A breach of general protocol as the Attorney General is supposed to be in charge.

brainiac-dumdum

Well, I've checked out your wiki link, and that seems to support the view that Addington was tasked with interpreting the rules in line with Cheney's agenda. I'm sure he's a brilliant man, but according to that he's still essentially doing the bidding of Cheney, and I suspect others could have done so equally well. Agreed?

yes

The OLC did not and was not going to babysit the organization created by Paul Wolfowitz and D Feith. These two men were creating the ideological foundations that Cheney picked up after 9/11 in the early 1990's. The man working as Cheneys chief of staff was working under an ideological structure crated by men that ran the later Office of Special Plans. Addington, instead, was a cog within this machine.

A key facet of this time was to fall in line, ideologically with the neoconservative ideology or get pushed aside.

The Iraq nation-building adventure was Wolfowitz's baby, but the idea was also a larger part collusion that required a legal out.

It wouldn't have mattered how many delusions Wolfowitz conjured were he not able to get legal justification for them.
