Supposedly two people died in the accident as well. There's also a potential tropical storm on the way. God clearly hates the gulf. The Louisiana politicians need to pray harder.

Hard to exactly call it a "screw up". More like "shiat happens". It's not like the ROV operator intentionally bumped into it. You have changing currents to deal with down there. No real reliable way to navigate except visually, and the visibility sucks.

If it didn't interrupt the drilling of the relief wells than it really isn't that much of a problem in the big picture.

No it's a screw up.

Wow, dare I say that I can't see how BP could fark this up any more?
Thanks for laying waste to the Gulf of Mexico.

No. No they didn't.

Two people on cleanup crews have died in accidents completely unrelated to this morning.

One was shot though... and I bet its a turtle activist related thing!

Just great, guys. Wonderful. I know shiat happens, but for God's sake, these kinds of problems just solidify BP as the Company of Stupid.

If you consider drowning in a pool because you are drunk of your ass connected to a remote control robot bumping into the well connected then, yes, two people died because of this.

Reading, learn it.

As much as I really really hate BP and everything that is happening, I'm gonna go ahead and ignore this one.

ROV's are incredible hard to control, especially with limited visibility and currents created by the gushing wellhead.

They detected a gas problem after the collision, and took the CORRECT steps to prevent the cap from being damaged further.

An accident happened in a rough environment, and they took the right steps this time.

I'm ok with that.

BP's interpretation......moved....to ensure the safety of ..operations

This morning at approximately 0845 CDT a discharge of liquids was observed from a diverter valve on the drillship Discoverer Enterprise, which is on station at the MC252 wellsite. As a precautionary measure, the lower marine riser package (LMRP) containment cap system, attached to the Discover Enterprise, has been moved off the Deepwater Horizon's failed blow-out preventer to ensure the safety of operations and allow the unexpected release of liquids to be analysed.

We must become one with the oil. We must smell the oil. We must touch the oil. We must feel the oil. We must revel in it's powerful, slippery presence. We must love the oil. Yes, the solution is clear.

We must use the oil to fap with.

/yea, it's better that way
//dick's might fall off though
///but it's for a good cause...

Can't they set up a periphery of some kind of electronic positioners for this sort of thing, so they have more to go by than dead reckoning and blurry cameras?

Hell, I'd donate toward a flame-thrower or incendiary air strike in that situation.

For anyone interested in seeing an uncapped, oil-spewing demon from hell, here you go. (new window)

The collision didn't cause the cap removal; Allan said there were bubbles of hydrocarbons going up the hot water line which prompted an early removal of the cap. Gas going up the wrong way can be a big problem.
