Kinda creeped me out.

okay, number one, it is '72 pieces of human remains', not necessarily from different people.

secondly, why do we have to read this in the london telegraph. is there no american paper that considers this news?

If true, that makes it even worse. Seriously dude, when you find yourself at the bottom of a hole, stop digging.

He/She has a right to his/her opinion. Why can't people on here just go, "Well, I don't agree but I guess you can think what you like,"?

Why does everything have to be an egotistical e-peener fight around here?

Because what he's (xynix) propagating is tantamount to hate-speech?

Free speech>hate speech

That has what to do with an argument on a private space again? Or were you just stating that in general and it had nothing to do with what you quoted?

It was a comment on the concept of "hate speech" in general. Obviously Fark can limit speech as it sees fit.

Goddammit, that's not where the mosque is going
It's not like they discovered the bodies while excavating to pour the foundation for the damn thing

"Cordoba Initiative's plan to build a 13-story, $100-million Islamic worship center at the site. The mosque proposed to be built less than a block away from where the World Trade Center once stood.."

Close enough for me.. It's a giant islamic "fark you" at America. Bin Laden is probably getting a kick out of this article..

Oh brother.

Bin Laden is probably dead, and Al Qaeda never claimed credit for 9/11, probably because they had little or nothing to do with it.

Regardless, who cares if a mosque goes there, unless you are a hater/racist? Obviously the Muslims who worship at that mosque aren't the ones who may or may not have steered planes into the WTC.

some_random_guy: 9 years later and they're still finding remains? What the fark? Seriously, what the f*ck?

Look at the clusterfark that was Katrina.

The US is absofarkinglutely terrible at handling any kind of disaster situation on their own soil.

Seriously, they should have had that entire site cleared out in months, maybe a year, and construction should have already finished on the replacement. If only because pushing hard to get a replacement in shows the masterminds behind it how little effect it had.

As it stands, 9/11 was wildly successful. For the terrorists. Both in actually hitting the target, and in the entire aftermath that resulted. The US responded exactly as they wanted, locking down on their own citizens in reaction and stumbling about, incapable of dealing with the disaster.

This is not an anti-American screed. I wish you guys the best. But seriously, the last decade has been a long and not-so-slow decline, and it hasn't really stopped with Obama.

Nor is this anti-Obama. He's trying to stop a speeding train that's headed off a cliff. He's jammed the brakes, but it's still moving at a pretty good clip.

ItsNotButter: some_random_guy: 9 years later and they're still finding remains? What the fark? Seriously, what the f*ck?

THIS!

From what I'm reading, they had to put a road in just to be able to get equipment in and out to work on the site. Inevitably, they had to lay the road in an area that might have remains. It was unavoidable. Now they're at a point in the construction process where they're able to go back and dig out this temporary road, and find remains that were trapped under it. And let's be honest here: we're talking about bits and pieces of bone at this point.

Hopefully they're able to ID some people and get added closure for a few people.

aspAddict: I saw a post on some website (cant remember which one...GroupHug or something like that...) that said "My family thinks I died in the 9/11 attacks."

I have little doubt that there are people out there who used 9/11 as an opportunity to walk away from their lives. Your financial/personal situation is effed, you work in the towers, you narrowly escape with your life, and when they fall you see a chance to get out of your current situation and start over. Pretty dark decision, but I'm sure a few people made it.

I'm familiar with the project that recovered these remains. I've seen a few articles in the forensic newsletters and journals about it, but not much in the major media.

Earlier this year, NYC started a project to sift the last of the WTC debris. The focus was on outlying areas of the WTC site where debris could have been pushed by the collapse and then covered during the response, so areas of parks and surrounding streets were excavated. I think one of the triggers for the new search was the discovery of WTC debris and remains in a section of sewer under a manhole.

The remains located are at this point only tiny pieces of bone and while 72 pieces were identified as individuals, some of those 72 belong to victims who were identified years ago. The identification project NYC has been running and will continue to run is amazing... it's just a shame that they've had so much practice to perfect it.

poot_rootbeer: Wow, it's like you're entirely unaware of the concept of private ownership of real property.

Yeah, because letting it sit there filled with rubble is such a good business decision for the owner.

Not to mention, for all the bluster that Bush talked about how this was an attack on America, you'd think America would pony up some bucks to help clean it up and deal with the disaster. Or at least the city it's in. Or something. Hell, hold a fundraiser, you could have gotten millions if it went national within 6 months of the attack.

It's like saying how much getting shot hurt, and then refusing to go to the hospital to get it stitched up.

It's not. In some cases, you may be perceiving hate from atheists where none exists, and in other cases, you are certainly ignoring hatefulness from religious people.

If you had a different set of prior beliefs, it would appear differently to you. Neither "side" of that debate has a monopoly on jerks.

As a gay American, I already have enough problems dealing with the homophobic morons who were born here; I don't think we need to import any more.

As annoying as Christians are, by and large they obey the rules. You don't see Christians rioting in the streets and threatening to behead infidels because a cartoon pissed them off. There's a reason why Comedy Central can poke fun at Jesus but won't even dare allow Mohammed's name be mentioned on their network. To quote Penn Jillette, "I believe very much that the most damning thing you can say about Muslims is that you're afraid to say anything because they'll hurt you."

The majority of the women choose it based on their religious/cultural beliefs and pressures.

We should encourage the subjugation of women. The less equal the sexes in our society, the better off our society will be.

PirateKing: But should she be allowed to wear that if she wants to? Even if that desire is based on a belief that you and I may disagree with? I agree wholeheartedly that nobody should be forced to wear it.

I agree wholeheartedly with this, so long as we include "a religion that states you will burn for eternity unless" as something that amounts to forcing.

We just had a case up here with a Muslim woman who refused to remove her niqab for her driver's license photo, which requires that the face be visible. There was a huge clusterfark about religious persecution and such.

My stance was that if the official policy were that I had to remove my pants, I would, even if I'm not comfortable walking down the street in my skivvies. If she's forbidden to remove it, then her religion should not be permitted to exist in any civilized nation for the same reasons we forbid human sacrifice and cannibalism, regardless of religious affiliation.
