So, you support the subjugation of women, and you want to encourage the spread of it in the United States?

Because that's exactly what a burka is. It's a way to subjugate women.

Government bureacracy. Locally, a stadium was destroyed. Some of the area was sold off and is not condos. The rest was supposed to be government built condos. It sits empty. 10 years later.

This is how it works. Politics gets in the way of progress.

shower_in_my_socks: ItsNotButter: some_random_guy: 9 years later and they're still finding remains? What the fark? Seriously, what the f*ck?

THIS!

From what I'm reading, they had to put a road in just to be able to get equipment in and out to work on the site. Inevitably, they had to lay the road in an area that might have remains. It was unavoidable. Now they're at a point in the construction process where they're able to go back and dig out this temporary road, and find remains that were trapped under it. And let's be honest here: we're talking about bits and pieces of bone at this point.

Hopefully they're able to ID some people and get added closure for a few people.

From what I SAW, I remember them putting steel plates around most of lower Manhattan's streets, as the opened them up to rebuild the telecommunication and power infrastructure. It took merely months for most of the smoldering debris to be carted away to a dump in Staten Island. I remember because, after witnessing the tragedy, i had to commute past the graveyard daily.

Last year (or was it the year before?) they found remains on a rooftop on Vesey Street.

Evidently, nobody took the time to remove the steel plates before repaving West Street. They have been too busy arguing over the property ever since. Bloomberg and the Port Authority have never been concerned about closure, only the almighty dollar.

I find it disgusting that this graveyard has become a tourist destination... A great place to snap pictures and sell T-shirts.

The exact same thing is true of Muslims. By and large, they are polite, friendly, generous and hospitable.

Unless you're gay, Jewish or a woman.

The few who are total dicks are not representative of the whole.

This is a sentiment that pops up in any discussion about any ethnic or religious group, which reflects a sad naivete about humanity. It is the reverse that is true, about any group:

The majority of people--Muslims, Christians, what have you--are total dicks, if not outright monsters. Look at Rwanda in 1994, when the Hutus slaughtered the Tutsis, down to the tiniest infants. Look at the former Yugoslavia, which brought back death camps and genocide to 1990s Europe. Look at how many Americans applauded Japanese Americans being herded into concentration camps here in the States during WWII.

People who are kind, tolerant, and loving constitute a tiny minority of humankind. Don't be fooled into thinking otherwise.

In America, the Christian majority accepts the rule of law so there is little chance that their pastors can drive them to commit atrocities, so far, although Christians have been able to use the ballot box to strip gay people of legal protections in many states. I have seen how Muslims treat gay people in Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia--we don't need things made any worse here than they already are.

Everyone's free to give his or her opinion, and everyone else is free to call the opinion-giver a twat. Disparagement does not deprive anyone of their "right to his/her opinion." (And even if the 1st Amendment right of free speech applied on this site, you still don't have any protection from criticism.)

Unless you're point is more, "why can't people just ignore idiots/things they disagree/things that bother them?" which seems to be some innate human tendency, and anyway, I don't think we want to encouraging that kind of apathy any more than it's already in place.

Even then. A lot of my neighbors are East African Muslims. You're right that their religion is just as anti-Semitic, sexist and homophobic as Christianity. Where you're mistaken is assuming that they are less prone to follow the laws than Christians are. They aren't. The Muslims in the US are just as prone to obeying secular law as the Christians are.

There are nearly seven Billion people on this planet. If we were mostly blood-thirsty savages ready to start torturing and butchering each other at the slightest provocation, there would be far fewer of us and our history would be far bloodier.

Americans in particular but humans in general, tend to dramatically over-estimate the amount of violence that exists in the world. But just today, I walked all the way down to the corner store without ripping out anyone's throat with my teeth. In fact, it's amazing how many days most people can go without brutally murdering a stranger.

In other words, I think you are exaggerating the amount of violence. You have cited a few horrific examples that stand out in their brutality; but they stand out precisely because such atrocities are relatively rare.

In the US, the Christians who try to deprive people of their rights have consistently been beaten back while the cause of equality has steadily advanced. (Granted, more slowly than I would like.)

In the US, the majority of American Muslims also accept the rule of law. How they treat gays in Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia does not offer any insight into how they treat gays here. Iran and Saudi Arabia are explicitly ruled by religious laws. The US is not.

In fact, Muslims who immigrate to the US (A) tend to be those who are not happy with Sharia law (which is why they are leaving), and (B) tend to become increasingly secular the longer they stay in the US.

Some politicians and pundits make a pretty good living convincing people to be afraid. but xenophobia never pays off in the long run. There's really no benefit in being afraid.

We calculated that the floors that would be hit would be three or four floors. I was the most optimistic of them all...We had notification since the previous Thursday that the event would take place that day. We had finished our work that day and had the radio on...Muhammad (Atta) from the Egyptian family (meaning the al-Qaeda Egyptian group), was in charge of the group...The brothers, who conducted the operation, all they knew was that they have a martyrdom operation and we asked each of them to go to America but they didn't know anything about the operation, not even one letter. But they were trained and we did not reveal the operation to them until they are there and just before they boarded the planes."
