The only exercise I get is shuffling paper under artificial lights. On a good day I walk to the copier.

I like the beer idea.

Is there a law somewhere stating that old people must always give alcohol as one of the key reasons for their longevity?
2003-05-29 08:05:11 AM
Does this prove that the subway diet was more the walking to the store than the eating of subway?
2003-05-29 08:13:17 AM
shiat, that's the only excercise I get.

I guess in 80 years time old people will be saying "I belive that my 15 hour playstation sessions and $600 a day crack habit were the key to my long life"
2003-05-29 08:18:24 AM
his daughter is 63? damn, he started his family late, there should be another generation there with him at this point.

This man reminds me of my grandmother.
2003-05-29 08:31:01 AM

They are gonna say:

How did he afford a 600 dollar a day crack habit playing on the playstation 15 hours a day?
2003-05-29 08:39:06 AM
Jesus, how come there are so many stories about old people and their dietary advice on Fark these days?

"150 year old says secret to old age is killing kittens and wiping hot grits on naked body"

Who cares??
2003-05-29 08:40:51 AM
Are you supposed to inhale cigar smoke as you would with a cigarette, or do you just puff it?
2003-05-29 08:43:26 AM

Just puff, don't inhale. Savor the taste in your mouth, then blow smoke rings.

Best. Use of Hero tag. Ever.
Seriously, I heard about this yesterday. In Germany, there's a nice saying: "Sport ist Mord" = "sports is murder". This old man said that, and it's written on my T-Shirt for the Sports lessons. :D

Look, DCCarm, alchohol in moderation is one of the secrets to longevity. Live with it.

He may have forgot to mention that in his late 30s and early 40s he got exercise doing the following:

1939-1942: Running after the Jews and Russians
1943-1945: Running from the Russians
2003-05-29 09:38:35 AM
If forgot to add:

1946-present: Forgotting to mention he did either of those things.

I beg to differ. If I'm paying $10 to $15 for a cigar, I'm gonna inhale the bujeezus out of that thing. I smoke cigars at least a few times a week, and I consider myself pretty darn good at it :) You don't really get the tabacco buzz that you're looking for if you don't inhale at least a little bit. I've inhaled since day one - and in my opinion you're just wasting your time and money if you don't.

But that's just my opinion.

My Grandfather was in WW2 and 'nam and when he retired he drank a minimum of 24 beers a day and smoked 2 cartons of Marlboros. He died at 74. Old people def should be able to do whatever they want cause the key to a long life is to be happy. Fine old men like these make me look forward to being 60-70 (in about 40-50 years) I salute them with two words

Beer Me

Nein, der alte Man hat nicht gesagt das er finkt zwei Hookers jeden Tag auch.

Rauchen, Bier und Drei Wegen ist gut gesund.

Well I am about to get my exercise for the day.

Anyone else want coffee while I am over there?
2003-05-29 10:43:01 AM
If you're paying $10-15 per cigar (assuming you're in either the states or US, doesn't matter), you pretty much need to inhale. Those won't get you where you want to be any other way.

If that's all you can afford "a few times a week" that's cool, but IMO it's much better to save up and go to the $60-70 bad boys once every couple weeks. No need to inhale at all - in fact I'd argue that inhaling ruins it.

Just puff slowly, enjoy the taste, and by the end you'll be very good to go. Inhaling is only good for a cheap-o quick head high. It's the slow build and long lasting "body high" that I like of nice Cigars.

Not saying there's anything wrong with a cheap-o head high, but that's not what Cigars are about.

I really hope someone comes around and posts..

"muwahahahaha blubber I only smoke CoooooHIIIBAAA!!!!"

I want to smack someone today.

Actually sticking to one brand is a pretty good idea. I wanted to be Mister Try Everything and I just really ended up trying some bad stuff and turning myself off to cigars for a while.. then I went back to what I liked and stuck with it.

But I like the "I am better then you because I smoke Cohiba's" argument. Those are fun.
2003-05-29 11:12:21 AM
I like to stick with Montecristos (usually #3) and Padrons generally speaking. And when money's real tight, I'm perfectly happy with some crap-tastic Backwoods cigars, lol.

I've had my share of Cubans when I was in Europe last summer, and those were definitely good, but not all they're cracked up to be IMO.

Twotontim - where on earth can I find a $60 - $70 cigar? In all of the cigar shops around here I've never seen one quite *that* expensive, but I'd be interested to try one and see what I'm missing out on. In either case, I wouldn't be able to afford that type of smoke anyways so maybe it's a bad idea to taste it in the first place....

inhaling cigars? i bet you if you inhale cigars and smoke 6 a week, they'll kill you in 10 years, you're not supposed to inhale them at all :)
(learned from a father who actually went to a cigarsmoking course)

For anyone looking for a source of cheap cigars:

Look up Thompson Cigar. Order a catalog. If you don't smoke, get one of the beginner humidor/cigar/ligher type bundles. Cheap, and good beginner cigars. Then find a good shop near you.

Close to me in Minneapolis/St. Paul (MN) is Tobacco Grove in Maple Grove. Good guys, good smokes, good atmosphere.

/my two cents

Yesterday: In 110 years of her life, Eva Fridell's secret to long life is a little nip of whiskey

Coincidence? I think not.

"He was the runt of his family, born in Essen in 1893 as the youngest of eight children, all of whom have long since died."

Do they really need to point out that the oldest man in the country's older siblings are dead?

They could of moved...

But yes, at 110, I'd expect your Elder Siblings to be dead.

Over time I've become a good / known customer to a few Cigar shops, and so they're happy to do special orders and such for me. One thing I've found, though, is the "best" stuff is rarely on display for the public to see, don't ask me why because I just don't know. If you want the good stuff, you have to ask the nice Tobacconist - and it's up to him as to whether or not he wants to offer them to you.

My best theory is quite simply the costlier ones are harder to come by, so the nice Tobacconists want to save them for their regular customers, and not just some twit off the street. How would it look if Joe-Regular-Customer comes in to buy his favorite Partagas Churchills only to find that they're sold out?... I don't know though - just a guess.
