It's called nepotism

2010-06-19 03:36:10 PM
I wasn't made aware I was supposed to be hating on this kid, I actually find him to be a much better child sctor than just about anyone.

But then again we live in the age of internet white rage, so unfortunately for Jayden he's not a Disney product vaccum sealed for our mutual protection.

Spaztictacular: It's called nepotism

I wish I had your life, I mean if the worst thing going on in my life was worrying about Hollywood nepotism I'd be pretty set.

But I have bad news for you (but great news for your cardiologist) Hollywood is boiling over with nepotism, hell, most of the industry is based in it... Every sector of the biz is all bout who you know or who your parents are or know.

Woah there... back up a minute. I don't hate Jayden Smith and Hollywood nepotism (or any other form of nepotism for that matter) is hardly the worst thing going on in my life... I was providing an answer to EW as to why the 'we' of the internet probably hates him.

Calm down.

Are you trying out for the warm-up act at BadAnalogyGuy's next performance at 'Giggles' comedy club?

You've got a long ways to go to catch up with him.

To be fair, the internet hates Disney stars as well. The real reason why the internet hates Jayden is that the internet hates everything except Futurama and the first 8 seasons of the Simpsons.

I think it's just that we hate Will Smith. We're tired of him. And he's a Scientologist, too, which means he's an egomaniac.

2010-06-19 03:55:53 PM
Non-story both ways.

A) "Hating" an actor is kind of stupid, particularly if he's done nothing particularly enraging. It's one thing for 'Nam vets and their families to hate Jane Fonda, or families of 9/11 to hate Oliver Stone for his "terrorism is tolerable" comment, but it's something else entirely to go all-guns-blazing on an 11 year old child being raised in show business. He's done nothing wrong.

B) Nepotism? Big farking deal. It's Hollywood. In fact, it's every career. If you were of Will Smith stature in your career and your kid (or sibling, buddy, lover, whatever) wanted in, and he appeared to be good at it, you'd tug a string or two to get him the gig. It's not the kid's fault; he's fortunate, sure, but it's not like you're disabled and your bread-winning actor child got bumped from some Nickelodeon show because Will Smith made a phone call.

C) Cue the Ric Romero picture: people on the internet say cruel things for teh lulz. They may even say them in real life, but they don't mean them; they're just trying to look witty and clever in front of their pals. Put them face to face with Jayden or either of his parents, and they'd be as sycophantic and congratulatory as the biggest fans. Except they'd feel like real assholes afterword because they'd realize they were douchebags.

D) Anyone who judges a child by adult standards is quite simply an idiot.

I say good for the Smiths, and good for Jayden. I hope, if he continues acting, he doesn't fall prey to Child Actor Syndrome. Given that his folks are pretty level, I think he's got an excellent head start.

2010-06-19 04:03:21 PM
I think they hate him cause its hard to find a reason to hate his dad. Probably easier to find a reason to hate his mom, but not so much.

2010-06-19 04:06:24 PM
I don't hate him, but the obvious foisting him upon us because of who his father is, who I also don't dislike either, is rather annoying. That and the Karate Kid remake looked painful.

Didn't see the letterman thing, but I did see a local junket interview with Jaden Smith and Jackie Vhan together. The interviewer was nice, asking easy, run-of-the-mill junket questions. That little s@&$ was nothing but smug and rude and insulting, when he even bothered to answer. Several times, Jackie Chan tried to smooth things over, or answer for him to mitigate the uncomfortable silence, but it didn't really help. Both the interviewer and Chan were visibly embarrassed throughout the whole thing.

He came off as a spoiled, self-important snot on Letterman. Talk shows are about having a conversation with the host while plugging whatever one's latest product is, and Jayden didn't seem interested in conversing.

2010-06-19 04:55:34 PM
The Letterman clip was the first I've seen of the kid outside of the KK remake spots. He seemed like a smart kid who's bored with the press side of his job. I'd love to see him sit down with a real interviewer (we miss you, Tom Snyder). Letterman is a hack and the kid saw through his soft pitch schtick. Good on him.

In a recent fark thread, the article that was talking about how Hollywood is wising up to the public's annoyance with reboots and sequels said it perfectly. We don't feel like we're being catered to, we feel like we're being marketed at.

Here's a movie that didn't need remaking, staring a kid in an obvious star vehicle, with commercials giving away what should be a great in-theater surprise, having a title that makes no sense except to capitalize on the previous film's recognizability.

I don't hate Jaden Smith, but I do have disdain for this whole mess. And it's laughable that people suggest there's racism involved, considering the whole movie is an excuse to cast the Chinese in one of two roles -- compliant pro-Americans and little punk Communists.

I thought Jayden was adorable on Letterman - he held his own where many other older folks have failed.

I'm sure like any other 11-year-old, he says some jackass stuff sometimes - oh well....

OMG! Jayden Smith only got his part because his dad is Will Smith!

OMG! Michael Douglas only got his part because his dad is Kirk Douglas!

OMG! Georgia Moffett only got her part because her dad is Peter Davison! (nothing is too obscure for Fark)

OMG! Elizabeth II only got her part because her dad was George VI!

OMG! Jesus Christ only got his part because his Dad is God!

Haven't seen this new Karate Kid, probably won't until its on Instant Queue for Netflix.

But every role he's been in so far? Pretty bland, emotionless, etc. Blank stares don't work for every role you know.

(I don't really care, nepotism is nothing new).

*Checks Wikipedia* Yes, the best episode of the Simpsons ever, "You Only Move Twice" is in the eighth season. Carry on.

That's still better than 99% of child actors. They are the worst.

I was not aware I was supposed to be hating him.

However, I am aware that I carry a deep-seated hatred for unnecessary movie remakes/TV adaptations and anyone named Ja(y)den, Aidan, Aiden, Caden, Braden, or similarly stupid names.

Hate the remake, not the actor, at least in this case.

This thread hurts my heart--I didn't know Will and Jada Smith are Scientologists. . . -_-.

I just came back from watching the Karate Kid, and thought Jaden did a good job!

If he's spoiled, a scientologist, named Jaden, those things aren't his fault, even if they are all awful.

No, not really. The thing about kid actors, is that they're just like adult actors. There are tons of them, only a few stand out as really bad or any good at all. Most of them fade into the background.

This kid though? He just stands out as really bad. People saying he's like his dad are delusional. His dad has emotional range and timing, this kid (aside from a Karate Kid that I have not seen) doesn't. He just has this blank solemn look on his face with every line delivered. zzz

This is a pretty good summary. Some movies seem like they're made for the betterment of humanity through the arts. You feel like a better person to have watched it. It was a beautiful film with beautiful acting.

And then there are others where it's just a money making device with actors who are just propelling their career. This is that kind of movie, which is why I really couldn't give a rats behind about it.

And I will actually admit that the "privilege" aspect does have a small part of my cringe. He might be a good actor, but he seems spoiled. He'll probably mature and wise up and be a good actor with great films in his late teens. As long as he avoids Star Wars remakes.

/I actually am not a big fan of Will either.

2010-06-19 06:56:58 PM
I hate him because he's done absolutely NOTHING to earn billing above Jackie Chan, and yet...
