This is certainly doubleplus ungood.

But as long as the word "asshat" doesn't go down the memory hole, FARK will be fine.

Every parent both looks forward to and dreads they day when their child outsmarts them.

Looks future parents no longer need fear fear that day.
2003-05-28 01:42:19 PM
This whole PC thing is getting WAY out of hand.
2003-05-28 01:43:00 PM
Moral Statute Machine: John Spartan, you are fined one credit for a violation of the Verbal Morality Statute.
This is why they're not liberals in any kind of literal sense, because they don't want any freedom to exist that makes someone feel bad.
2003-05-28 02:02:11 PM
it's the end of the world.
2003-05-28 02:02:21 PM
How is "blind" offensive? Can you see? No? Then you're blind. Deal with it.
2003-05-28 02:02:23 PM
The problem is that the textbook writers (editors, publishers) don't want to offend the right OR left, and so the textbooks are double-sanitary.
2003-05-28 02:02:30 PM
Man, that's stupid. I mean, boy, those guys are getting out of hand.
2003-05-28 02:02:42 PM
Sea!?.... SEA!?!?

This is by far, the absolute stupidest thing I have ever heard in my entire life.

I can't even think about it or I'm going to burst a blood vessle in my head...
2003-05-28 02:03:30 PM
i think this woman was on the daily show a few weeks ago. it's pretty sick stuff, to be honest.

2003-05-28 02:04:21 PM
This sounds a lot like the book 1984. Let's all just switch to Newspeak.

/Doubleplus ungood.
2003-05-28 02:04:23 PM
Oh my god that makes me angry. I hate censorship in all forms, and this is just absurd. I want to kick somebody in the nuts now.
2003-05-28 02:04:30 PM
Stop the world I want to get off.
2003-05-28 02:04:47 PM
this law was prolly enacted by some blind biatch with a boyish figure who's pissed as hell because he/she was never allowed to join in the polo games that were played on yachts while out to sea....
2003-05-28 02:05:04 PM
Oh sorry Albo. Didn't see your 1984 reference. Major props to thee, well-read traveler.
2003-05-28 02:05:11 PM
Yeah, how will blind people be offended if the word "blind" is IN TEXTBOOKS?! Make braille versions of the ame textbooks where "blind" is replaced by something like, I dunno, "fudgy." There, one problem solved!!
2003-05-28 02:05:23 PM
Tourney3p0 I saw the woman who wrote the book on the Daily Show and she told Jon that you can't say a blind guy did something special (like climb Everest or something,) because to say that implies that a blind person isn't expected to be able to have done it, which is offensive to blind/handicapped people.

Make sense now?
2003-05-28 02:05:33 PM
this is scaring the crud out of one that is reading these printed words.
2003-05-28 02:05:52 PM
See, this just goes to show that the forces of evil are way more organized than the forces of common sense.

I mean, I welcome the conquest of the earth by our space ant overlords and look forward to helping them crush dissidents.

/or something like that
2003-05-28 02:06:36 PM
Ravitch said old is ageist, man is sexist and sea can't be used in case a student lives inland and doesn't grasp the concept of a large body of water.

But that's the whole point of school, LEARNING NEW CONCEPTS!!!
2003-05-28 02:06:49 PM
Armageddon arriving in 3... 2.. 1...
2003-05-28 02:07:07 PM
Very sick. This goes in a much different direction than 1984. The worst of it is, is that this is a bunch of publishers! Of course, controversy only sells books if they aren't textbooks. Granted, I'm all for giving the Little Guy a fair say, but when he can cause anything that bothers his pretty Little Heart a moment's unrest to cease to be said, that Little Guy needs to be stepped on, hard.
2003-05-28 02:07:11 PM
Burn all zie books!
2003-05-28 02:07:20 PM
"and sea can't be used in case a student lives inland and doesn't grasp the concept of a large body of water."

I guess it would not be PC to refer to such students as "big-time 'tards", huh?
2003-05-28 02:07:21 PM
And, on a separate note, my headline for this was better. Take that, you boyish blind polo babes!!
2003-05-28 02:07:35 PM
Eventually all textbooks in the US are going to be just grey sheets bound together.
2003-05-28 02:07:41 PM
Sounds like the time I couldn't say "fart" on the school bus but she will let you say "fark", "shiat", and among the rest of those words. Whoever thought of this is a true asshat in my book.
2003-05-28 02:07:53 PM
There were no slaves, there was no holocaust, there was no new world, there was no old world...creationism runs amok, the world just sprang into being, as is, 50 years ago...why do they even bother teaching anything anymore?
2003-05-28 02:08:30 PM
I can't take one more second of this PC crap
2003-05-28 02:08:31 PM
That's it if I ever have rug-rats, it home schooling and porn for them....
2003-05-28 02:08:32 PM
In other news, I still don't deal well with stupid people.
2003-05-28 02:08:35 PM
I'm not sure I have words to describe how idiotic this is. And I know I don't have words to describe it that would get passed the censors.
2003-05-28 02:08:53 PM
if they just replaced the offensive words with something like... Pig latin or something then everything would be fine!!! C'MON politicians! you're supposed to be SMART! How come this wasn't implemented right away! I can't be the only one that thought of this AMAZING concept!

Sea = easA? (sorry my pig latin isn't up to speed)
2003-05-28 02:08:57 PM
2003-05-28 02:09:02 PM
Ahh.. Political Correctness, the religion of peace.

2003-05-28 02:09:46 PM

Not directed to you as I assume you're just relaying her point of view, but can't we all agree that a blind person ISN'T expected to climb Everest?? I mean it seems to me that this kind of thing actually diminishes significant accomplishments. If a guy with artificial legs wins a marathon are we all supposed to just say "good job fellow normal human on winning a race" instead of praising his determination in overcoming the odds?

/not yellin, just sayin
2003-05-28 02:09:49 PM
I for one am glad we will now be told how we can think. I am so tired of thinking for myself and hope that the US public school system will do a great job of making everybody more paranoid about being politically correct.

The world would be a much better place if only we never said the word yacht.

Here is a list of a couple more words that should be banned:

Not because they are offensive, just because I think it would make sentence structure so much more interesting.

Think about it we could be a much more efficient society if we could turn:

"Today he and I walked to the store to buy an Orange soda"

"Today walked store buy an soda"

Think of all the time and typing we could save!
2003-05-28 02:10:07 PM
Anyone have any idea what I should use to teach my child? She's one now... by the time she gets to school age, the pages in her textbooks will likely make no sense whatsoever. Help!!
2003-05-28 02:10:22 PM
Why is the word blind offensive? wtf? How else do you describe someone who is so seeing-impaired that they can't see?
2003-05-28 02:10:25 PM
She says a lot of people are having fun finding new titles for Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" which presents problems with every word except "and" and "the." Ravitch said old is ageist, man is sexist and sea can't be used in case a student lives inland and doesn't grasp the concept of a large body of water.

Words cannot express how incredibly idiotic this paragraph is.

Somebody needs to be kicked in the nutsack twice over because of this.
2003-05-28 02:10:41 PM
what in the world? don't you people have freedom of speech? I'm pretty sure this constitutes as censorship.
2003-05-28 02:10:47 PM
It's the publishers doing this, not the goverment. They have a product to sell and to keep cost down the largest suppliers dictate the most profitable market. Why do you have captialism so much?
2003-05-28 02:10:50 PM
Sorry, AlleyKat. Peace implies that there is or was war, and religion is...well, everyone agrees that religion is uniformly and without any exception bad.
2003-05-28 02:10:52 PM
How could "blind" be offensive? Anyone who would be offended by seeing it, can't see it.

/insensitive moron.
2003-05-28 02:10:55 PM
Albo: right on.

*toasts Albo with glass of Victory gin*
2003-05-28 02:10:58 PM
I much less embiggened by this article.
2003-05-28 02:11:40 PM
Sorry, that would be:

"Today store buy an soda"

This new english is challenging!
2003-05-28 02:12:11 PM
I'm writing a PC history of World War II. Of course, you can't mention war, because that might upset somebody. So it goes like this:

Hitler had low self-esteem. So he hurt some peoples' feelings. But then they all learned to care and share and had some pie.

The End.
2003-05-28 02:12:53 PM
Books are offensive to me because I can't read
