Excellent! I hope it gets some good TV coverage.

If there's anything that gets less media coverage than the WNBA, it's women's soccer!

As long as the US beats Mexico like it did in "La Copa Mondial!"

I saw a couple of matches of the Women's Under-19 Soccer championships in Vancouver. Those girls are vicious, especially the Latina ones.

Yeah watch them get their tops off, but DONT look too close, it ruins the fantasy.

Most of them look like a bulldog sucking pish off a nettle.

Not always true. PAX-TV does show the WUSA league games on Saturdays in the summer. Even the pro men's league soccer in the US get even less coverage.

I saw games back in '99 and this is the most awesome news ever!

The best movie about womens sports has to be H.O.T.S.

I think it's interesting that there's such a disparity between the women and the men internationally in soccer. I guess it comes down to how hard girls are pushed into athletics in America in comparison to other countries. Every country has a huge drive to get men into sports, and America being so behind in the soccer world shines through. But girls here are not only allowed to compete, there are many people pushing them to do so.

In other news, golfer Vijay Singh told the media he believes women should not play soccer, and has vowed never to play another golf tournament in America ever again in protest.

Women need to play sports topless... I think it'd be worth watching then.

The US needs Women's World cup like a fish needs a bicycle.

I think this is great news. The US has some great teams and amazing players and hopefully this will raise the awareness of the League.

I was watching womens curling and asking myself, "Self, why is there a Womens Curling league and a Means Curling league?"

Self answered, "Because women are much better with a broom. Now go get me that empty Gatorade bottle, I need to take a piss and I don't feel like getting up."

To which I replied, "Would that make women better than men at curling?"

"Naw, the women would still get their asses kicked against men."

It's hard to be good at sports if you can't even vote, drive, leave the house without a male escort, are with child at age 15, or are running away from a forced clitorectomy. We win by default.

MillayZ that obviously rules out Africa, much of South America, and the Middle East...but what about Europe? Women seem just as emancipated there, but I don't think they have the equivalent of Title IX, all the scholarships for female atheletes, and everything else we have pushing girls into sports.

I for one love getting women into sports. Mmmm...runner's legs...

The "talent" is too split up in Europe because sure, there's 500,000,000 people over there, but that's split up into about 40 countries. We pick one team from 300,000,000 people, while, say, France only gets a pool of 70,000,000 or whatever. Get my drift?

2003-05-26 11:47:39 PM
Millay but that's done in men's soccer too. And yet the men still don't stand a chance against Germany, France, or England. Although I guess it's getting much closer, the men did pretty well in the last World Cup...so it may not be too long before we're able to compete with them, and then eventually use our population and wealth to our advantage.

Yes, but 99.9% of world-class male athletes in the US go into baseball, football, basketball and hockey.

2003-05-26 11:56:14 PM
Millay I wonder if there's a money issue at work. A great all-around male athelete has the opportunity to make millions going pro in the sports you mentioned, or to stay pretty poor in soccer.

For women, there aren't really any big money sports out there...so they're more free to do what they like and are best at.

I love soccer. Not that interested in women's soccer, though. But if they play in the Crew stady, I might shell out some money to watch.

AlexiLalasFan it's still a pretty interesting game. They aren't quite as fast and powerful, but ball control is always the best part anyway.

Nobody but 500,000 soccer moms give a rats ass. the US is the only country in the world that thinks that womens soccer matters, which is why they have the only fully professional league.

If FIFA was to award the mens competition to America 2 times running there would be a worldwide uprising that would push america to red level terrorism warning.

didn't we just have it?

2003-05-27 01:03:34 AM
yes, the US did host it in 1999 and China was suppose to host it this fall but it was moved out of fear of SARS. The US said early on that they would host it, especially since we had the stadiums and had shown 4 years earlier the ability to host it well.

2003-05-27 01:07:12 AM
This turns out crappy for Canadian soccer as we were hoping to be a frontrunner for the 2007 women's world cup but now China is being given that one automatically so we would have to wait all the way to 2011. There were some 50,000 fans here in Edmonton for the U19 women's final last summer. Not too shabby...
