Meh, the guy sounds like a creepy weirdo. Cutting people's hair (on the bus) and dumping glue on their heads are probably signs of something more serious.

Prison isn't really the place for him, in that case.

Rehabilitation is for the weak countries. Retributive justice is where it's at.
At least this will work as a deterrent on the next person that wants to cut strangers' hair...

Actually, it's more like Jorge wants to be hardcore, but his mother says no.

Jorge wants to be hardcore but his mother wont let him?

What the hell? That makes no sense.

I had lessons in becoming hardcore, but not from my mother. From nuns. In a Catholic boys home. There was boxing and there was mass, and both were religion.

The nuns greatly enjoyed seeing young boys beat each other bloody and taught you how to slip a little elbow into a sliding punch or how to apply a knee to the groin even with everybody looking. There was also this clear salve stuff that could be rubbed on boxing gloves, it causes the glove to stick to the skin on impact, causing horrific tears and rips from a good punch. The penguins loved a really bloody match.

That same boys home is now in the news because the priests were buggering the boys. Since I was a bad kid, and never got to go on any of the reward trips, I never got buggered.

Jorge needs to go out, get arrested, have his day in court, and, if he is lucky, he will get sent to a Catholic boys home correctional facility.

But something tells me he still wouldn't be hardcore.

The hair cutting/gluing is a first step. It's obvious that he has women issues, and wants to degrade, humiliate, and have control over them. He is also ruining their looks. So far, he is doing all this with baby steps - no real permanent damage done. If not stopped, however, he will escalate.

This (new window)

guy (new window)

started out breaking into women's bedrooms and cleaning them. He escalated to tying women up, cutting off their clothes with knives, and pouring baby oil all over them.

No one thinks he would not have eventually raped if he'd not been caught.

Ah. Googled him. Now I know where the interesting plot device for this book (new window) came from.

SPOILER ALERT: Also icky language ahead:

The rapist is arrested based on a perfect DNA match. Not too smart, he thought that by giving his victims douches, he was removing his semen. Excepth that it was still there - just all over the sheets.

The guy swore he was innocent. Swore it. Nobody believed him, though.

Turns out, he was. The real rapist worked at a sperm bank where the accused had made a deposit. He was using the douches to introduce the semen, not remove it.

An anecdote: I used to work with a very nice, very timid, very soft-spoken man who was a CPA. He also happened to be African-American and 6 ft 7 inches tall. He told me once at lunch that he'd grown weary long ago of folks asking him if he played basketball, or why he didn't. Anyway, when he was on vacation once in Los Angeles he'd been out partying with some friends in Beverly Hills, and while walking back to his hotel he answered nature's call against a building in a dark parking lot. As it turned out, a Beverly Hills cop car was nearby and he was arrested for public urination. The local Beverly Hills lock-up was closed for the week-end, so he was handcuffed to a group of offenders headed for a Hollywood prison. While riding in the van to the jail everyone asked each other "What're you in for?" Among the armed robbers and car thieves was Mr. CPA who was naive enough to admit "public urination." As if that didn't get him enough harassment, when they were being fingerprinted and photographed he felt that the cops were being too aggressive and disrespectful. "Now see here," he told an officer, "My taxes pay your salary." Guess who was ushered to a special room for a full body cavity search?

He was also convicted of witness tampering, according to the article. Telling his girlfriend what to say on the witness stand & asking a friend to plant evidence makes me think he's crazy. Crazy like a fox.

There is a show on Discovery about prison. It seems like half the guys in prison are severely mentally ill, and/or retarded.

The other half are just assholes.

It's not a JUSTICE system. It's a REVENGE system.

Pandering politicians love this "zero tolerance" method because it gets easy votes from the uniformed rabble.

Compassionate laws will only get votes from the few intelligent people.

Case Closed.

I disagree. I don't buy the whole "Innocent due to insanity" stuff. It lets people shoot the president and get away with it, for example.

Committing a crime and saying "Oh, I'm mentally ill, so it's OK" simply doesn't work for me. Those people need to be locked up for the same reasons we lock other criminals up - so that normal people will be safe from the idiots.

We can't afford to give health care to everyone else, so why should the fact that someone assaulted someone and plead insanity mean that we should pay to give them medical treatment that may or may not keep them from assaulting someone else?

Very few escape prison with an insanity defense. Judges with law degrees have the final say. Makes as much sense as hiring a Pharmacist to repair your automobile.

He's not in prison for cutting hair, he's in prison for witness tampering. If he had just played it cool, he could likely have gotten off with a slap on the wrist, since the law apparently doesn't state that hair cutting or gluing is a crime. Simple assault is about the best they could have gotten on him. Much more likely he would have had to deal with "mental anguish" lawsuits from the women who's hair he cut.

Not that I think the guy shouldn't be charged with simple assault or harassment, but does anyone see something wrong with this?

"Oregon law doesn't specifically deal with stealing or gluing a stranger's hair. So prosecutors charged him with third-degree robbery among other crimes"

So, we don't have a law for gluing, so we'll charge you with robbery! ??

At least assault makes sense. Yeesh!

2010-06-12 08:46:12 PM
You can sell long hair if you cut it off. Arguably, it's an asset. I'd have guessed assault too, but robbery sorta works.

2010-06-12 09:21:01 PM
You're wielding scissors that close to an unsuspecting person's head, it could have been a lot worse.

Cutting and glueing by ambush is basically assault.
