Yeah, I saw that same shot live. They were trying to get out from under the signs and streetlights I'm guessing.
2003-05-26 11:24:00 AM
I've seen K-Mart Blue LIght specials cause more commotion.
2003-05-26 11:25:41 AM
Yeah CG, there was like 10 people in the shot, they moved to the middle of the street and stoped. No duck and cover routine, just avoiding the chance of dropping glass from the neon and streetlamps. This was much smaller than the media wants it to look like.
2003-05-26 11:26:19 AM

Shiat...was blasting drum n bass in my headphones and noticed my stupid monitor speakers were on... that's why everyone was looking at me...and I thought it was cause I am so unbelievably sexy...
2003-05-26 11:26:55 AM
Will somebody please think of the beer glasses?

f-all the beer glasses, save the tequila!
2003-05-26 11:27:15 AM
CanuckGuy: Maybe they were as drunk as I was.... I swear.. I didn't feel a thing and yet everyone's telling me everything shook.

(In our part of the country it was about 2 to 3 on the richter scale) but still... Kinda hard to ignore you'd think.
2003-05-26 11:27:37 AM
I think these easterners just like a good hearty reason to panic and get all freak-out about stuff

Are the SARS out tonight baby?
2003-05-26 11:28:15 AM
If any of you have friends and relatives out here, try not to worry so much about this little shake. Minor injuries, nothing major. In well under six months they will be 100% back to normal again, and that's only if they were among the worst off that broke a bone.

Don't stress to much about it.
2003-05-26 11:30:21 AM
thankyou old gringo
2003-05-26 11:30:51 AM
Jello_Biafra, you sound like you caught the live show holding up a bic lighter or something. You (probably) wern't alive then, kiddo.
2003-05-26 11:31:30 AM
I was in an earthquake once... oh wait.. I just dropped a few quarters in the hotel bed..

/sorry... was drunk at the time
2003-05-26 11:32:44 AM
MatthewCole: Heh... Just wait until the Tokai quake hits.... That'll be a party-stopper...

mmm... I'm SO glad now that I didn't take that job in Shizuoka... :-)
2003-05-26 11:32:56 AM
Hell, if I'm screwing when the quake starts I can save my quarters. Fun for all ages.
2003-05-26 11:34:29 AM
Jello_Biafra: Now THAT's a flamebait! Not that I'm biting.

Shouldnt your last line read "That was tha bomb!" ?

2003-05-26 11:34:56 AM

Is a 7.0 a little shake? The Richter scale goes up to ten, I think I remember...and a seven is just little!?! My gods man, you are some kind of super-resilient unshakeable magnificent ba$tard!

Seriously, glad y'all are okay and stuff, but I'd hate to se a quake that worries you guys.

2003-05-26 11:34:58 AM
Yeah Jim, your probably right. Times ticking. That might take me out, but screw it, so might a bus next time I am sleepy at the crosswalk.

Everything can and will kill you, just ask the media. ;)
2003-05-26 11:35:36 AM
Panawave Laboratory was right! AAAAAAAAA! (They were 11 or days off, but still...)
2003-05-26 11:36:20 AM
I felt a teeny earthquake here once--the bed seemed to lurch beneath me. It was teeny, but the epicenter was about a mile away. My sister missed one of the San Francisco earthquakes because she was driving home from work at the time. Didn't feel a thing.
2003-05-26 11:37:28 AM
GIS for Japan Earthquake. And I thought Detroits roads were bad?!?!
2003-05-26 11:38:16 AM
Squirrel, I've been through a few quakes, until the death toll odometer starts spinning, I try not to worry. If I did worry about all this, I'd lose it. I'd be walking around the streets with a sandwich board screaming "Repent ye sinners!" while people pass by oblivious to my presence.

Nobody want's that.
2003-05-26 11:38:53 AM
Squirrelfury.... The quakes happen pretty much on a weekly basis here. The Japanese richter scale rated this one as a 6... I think the earth would pretty much have to open up and swallow the whole damn country before it hits the top of the scale around here :-)

MatthewCole: Well, when it does happen I hope it's in the middle of the penis festival in Aichi pref. It's make the news stories so much more interesting! :-)
2003-05-26 11:39:02 AM
Looks like Quebec's Highway 40 to me...
2003-05-26 11:39:34 AM
depends, what would you be wearing under the sandwich board?

2003-05-26 11:41:23 AM
That might be from the Kobe Quake MrNeutron. Look it up, that is some real scary stuff. This one pales in comparison.

2003-05-26 11:42:35 AM
This one was not nearly as bad, seriously.
2003-05-26 11:43:45 AM

I love the point about the beer. The media needs to take itself less seriously anyways.

Reuters also chose to report on the REAL tragedy of this earthquake...

2003-05-26 11:57:55 AM

NO, I've got
"My wife left me on Tuesday" written all over me.
I'm just a little bitter.

Christ man, I'm sorry. I take it all back...
2003-05-26 11:58:39 AM
There's something really funny about the photo in the article. A bunch of guys just hanging around, checking out a pothole-sized dip in the road, under the headline "Huge earthquake hits northern Japan".

Either somebody's sens of "Huge" is way off, or the editor made a bad choice in selecting that photo.

2003-05-26 12:02:32 PM
no...the real tragedy is if that picture were beer (the imported kind)...considering that in tokyo I pay about eight bucks for a corona!
2003-05-26 12:04:49 PM
Glasgowsfinest:here ya go
2003-05-26 12:05:54 PM
Yowch, man! $8USD for a Corona is little steep for me... Even if it is Tokyo... I'm glad I'm in Kofu (about an hour west)... Import at the local gai-jin bar will run you about $6.50/bottle.
2003-05-26 12:06:17 PM
Sounds like CanuckGuy needs to get a new best friend.
2003-05-26 12:06:28 PM
Earthquake rocks japan.. I still don't have to go to work!! Woohoo
2003-05-26 12:06:51 PM
It was really scary :-( even in Tokyo things were shaking and falling. Thank goodness there doesn't seem to have been much damage or many people hurt.
2003-05-26 12:07:21 PM

I'm sticking with my dog for the next little while.
2003-05-26 12:07:32 PM
yeah...youve got better yen rates....dont EVER go to misawa...its even worse there.
2003-05-26 12:09:13 PM
Jello_Biafra, if they were a better shot, they would kill you in your sleep by holding your head sideways and pouring bleach into your ear. No I'm not sure that's fatal, nor am I sure what it has to do with being a good shot, but its the first thing that came to my mind when I read your comments.
2003-05-26 12:11:43 PM
CanuckGuy, you mean your canine, as opposed to your homey gee slang "dog"?

Believe you me, I've been through plenty of extremely painful moments, and the best way to get over them is to sob your story to somebody who will listen about 10x over the course of a year, and then stop thinking about them completely.
2003-05-26 12:14:02 PM
Heh... Let's just say we're not rich enough to party in Roppongi (or similar). My idea of a party is hitting the liquor store inside the local supermarket, buying a 24 and maybe a bottle of Suntory XO brandy and going to a house party.... It's STILL cheaper than a night on the town.

Even here, to get a large pizza delivered you're looking at a good $22 (USD) which is something I'd never pay back in Canada...
