Hurrah.

Host nations have never lost an opener and have reached at least the second round of each World Cup, with six winning it.

Good luck, South Africa. Don't break the streaks.

My favorite online betting pools thus far:

First team to celebrate victory by revealing a Jesus T-Shirt

First player ejected from a game

First player to "accidentally" stomp some genitals (may or may not coincide with first player ejected from a game)

Number of shark attacks

Number of rounds before a race riot occurs in the streets

The opening match was actually played on Wednesday. The score was Muggers 7-0 Foreign Journalists.

I'll mainly be cheering for England, France, Mexico, Serbia and South Korea.

Spain to win it. Or possibly Spain. Outside bet: Spain.

My boss is a big footy fan so we've got the big screen hooked up throughout the tourney. He doesn't mind if we sit and watch the games. It's always funny to hear a cheer go up when a goal is scored and people race from their desks to watch the replays.

To the non-footy fans out there: hush yourself while the 3 billion fans on the planet are watching.

Is that a giant dung-beatle pushing a huge inflatable soccer ball?? Yes, yes it is....wow

/half empty stadium for the opening ceremony
//hype it as much as you want..its still just soccer, boring as shiat!

Watching the opening ceremonies now. They used "The Final Countdown" as one of the songs. How can you not love something like that?

Quick question from an American: is the World Cup single elimination? And if so, isn't having the US playing the UK in round one(considering market size) a bad idea? Similarly, having the host country play against (what I think is) a powerhouse like Mexico a bad idea?

I'm completely serious with these questions. I have no idea about the bracket set-up at all.

There is a group stage first. The top two teams from each group advance to the single elimination round, so the US is still alive if they lose to the UK. Mexico is not a powerhouse. They have never been beyond the quarterfinals in any World Cup. They are about the same level as the U.S.

It starts with groups of four, after that it's knock-out. Chances are England and The US will get out of group C, Algeria and Slovenia being the other countries.

Printable, color-coded schedule and chart (PDF) that you can fill out over the next month.

Also, I'm announcing my $100 World Cup Challenge. Over the next month, I will bet a certain amount on the winner of each game*, totalling $100. My challenge is to see if I wind up above par. You are welcome to participate without betting (if you wish me to keep track of your record, let me know and get your picks in each day before first kickoff).

Unfortunately, access to bodog is blocked at school, so if someone else can look up the moneylines on today's games, I'd appreciate it. My picks, locked in a few days ago are:
SOUTH AFRICA +175 (so this would earn me 275 points)
FRANCE even (for 200 points)

Anyone interested?

*-$1 x 48 first-round + $2 x 8 second-round + $3 x 4 quarterfinals + $6 x 2 semifinals + $2 third-place + $10 championship = $100.

In the group stage which we are in the best two teams from the group advance. So even if SA loses or draws today they still have a chance to advance (same for Mexico).

Mexicanos al grito de guerra!
Vamos Mexico!

Round-Robin in 8 groups of 4 to start off with, with the top 2 in each group (16 of the original 32) advancing to a traditional standard elimination tournament.

TeddyBallGame: Quick question from an American: is the World Cup single elimination? And if so, isn't having the US playing the UK in round one(considering market size) a bad idea?

No. First round is 8 groups of 4 teams. So each team plays at least 3 matches (3 points for a win, 1 for a draw). After the group stage, top 2 teams (so 16 in total) from each group go into the second round which is where it starts being sudden death. Teams topping their first round group will play a team which finished the group stage in second place. The USA/England (plus Algeria and Slovenia) group, is paired with the Germany/Serbia/Australia/Ghana group. Both England and USA will probably play at least 4 matches.

Then you have quarter finals, semi finals and the final.

Similarly, having the host country play against (what I think is) a powerhouse like Mexico a bad idea?

Mexico is emphatically not a powerhouse.

I'm completely serious with these questions.

Are you sure Fark's the right place for you? :)

To continue answering your question, there is a very basic level of seeding done. The hosts (SA) were kept out of the same group as the top 7 teams to better their chances. In addition, geography came into play: the 3 North American teams are separated; the 6 African teams are separated; the 5 South American teams are separated; the 4 Asian teams are separated (Australia counts as Asia; NZ doesn't, but NZ is in a separate group from them anyway); and no more than 2 European teams in any group.

Beyond that, luck o' the draw. So North Korea wound up in a group with the all-time best team (Brazil), a top-3 European side (Portugal), and the generally-claimed best team in Africa, Ivory Coast. South Korea wound up with seeded-but-questionable team Argentina, mid-level African side Nigeria, and happy-to-be-here Greece. All luck of the draw.

SigmaAlgebra: Mexico is not a powerhouse. They are about the same level as the U.S.

Almost correct. Mexico is actually just below us, crying because we have been dominating them the last decade, and they have now lost the only source of their machismo pride in relation to USA.

So they cry, they whine, they play dirty and they pretend that they are still good.

GO SOUTH AFRICA!!! Bafana bafana que van a ganar !!!

Ah, yes. Soccer. The reason I'm refusing to watch ESPN at any point for the next few weeks. I'll get my sports news from the newspapers and radios.

I'll never understand why America feels the need to become a power in a sport that is only popular worldwide because of the lack of equipment necessary to play it.

Soccer is popular in Slovenia because they have grass and round things. If they could afford football pads, they'd be playing it.

I guess I don't hate Mexico as much as the next American. I am rooting for the cheap shot artists to do well because it makes CONCACAF look better. Same goes for Honduras.
