Arcanum: I'm pretty sure most presidents use colorful language. But most of them from the (D) party seem to act very unpresidential in comparison to the ones from the (R) party.

Doctor Funkenstein: If you're the president of the United States and you go on the Today Show which is a morning show, where you're going to have a lot of kids sitting around watching this

Granted, I don't any have kids, but I have a hard time believing this one.

Mom: "Billy, you need to get ready for school right now, young man."

Billy: "Suck my balls, twatopotamus. Matt Lauer is on and dropping some mad knowledge."

Rubberband Girl: Seriously, if saying "ass" on national television actually "sullied the office," I wonder what level of damage she thinks far more grievous behavior (such as political scandals) have wrought.

On TV, they used to bleep the word ass. They no longer do for obvious reasons. Lady's an ass.

Not that it matters, but did he say it when he was VP or President?

The whole affair briefly reminded me of an old Chris Rock stand up bit. Then I lost interest.

Brother #1: "Hey man I got my Masters"

Brother #2: "Lemme axe ya dis, lemme axe ya dis. Can you kick MY ASS?"

it was when he debated geraldine ferraro, so he was VP at the time. he also asked he press corps, "who wants to know what geraldine smells like?" and then held up his middle finger.

You are part of the problem. I was neither making excuses for nor criticizing Barack Obama. I was criticizing the Presidency, and nothing I said indicated that what I'm talking about doesn't hold true regardless of who's in office. In fact, that's the whole point.

OK. I am part of The Great Nebulous Problem. You are the deluded internet poster genius who initiated The Great American Political Reformation.

Debby7813: This woman is an idiot. The interview was pre-recorded, and NBC chose when to show that little snippet. She should take it up with her bosses.

I came in here to point this out and it was done in a single post. I feel so useless now, I have nothing else to add.

Right?

I mean, WTF is that all about?

Also, what adult watches daytime TV?

And who the fark is Becky Quick?

Interestingly, the demands for Obama to show emotion are all coming from the left. It's pretty clear from the context that "show emotion" really means, "start flogging people and throwing them in prison".

Personally, I think the perfect tone is being set by Louisiana Governor Jindal. He's firm and focused on solving the problem, not screaming at someone.

I remember driving to work in Canada a few years ago and hearing the ex-Prime Minister (Kim Campbell) use the F-word live on CBC radio. It was about 7:30 in the morning.

And now come to think of it, I also remember a clip of another PM's voice (Jean Chretien this time) constantly saying "C'est la bullsheet" over my airwaives for about three days straight.

Man, them children in Canada are so scarred for life.

Barakku: It's certainly immature, but who the fark cares when it was shown? I don't remember ever watching the president (or any TV) during preschool anyway, I would have been more likely to see it during prime time on a school day.

Kids in grade school will respect him more for this. And the anchor is trying to be more respectable than the President. How the hell can they undermine the President like that when the situation is so serious? This only plays into BP's hands really. Think about the rhetorical effect of telling a generation of schoolkids that the president is not being appropriate. That really does make BP look like the good guys.

I mean holy fark. The USA is at war and this is a disaster on the homefront. Why si this newscaster allowed to say this crap? Shouldn't their boss perhaps have the national interest in mind and say, "Not here, not now, save it for your memoirs"?

2010-06-08 05:54:17 PM
Churchill2004: I'm more amused by Obama finally showing some discomfort- albeit discomfort that he's trying to overcome- at the modern presidency's everything-for-everyone combination of Santa Claus, Fairy Godmother, and Supreme Warlord of the Earth.

The childish demands that he become America Incarnate and properly Channel Our Emotions by showing Real Anger-- the whole thing is good exercise in just how absurd our demands of the politician who happens to scrape his way into the Oval Office actually are. And for once I think Obama actually realizes that, as evidenced by his (relative and uncharacteristic) reluctance to play the podium-pounding demagogue, despite all the chattering classes urging him to don his cape and go stop the oil spill by the pure awesome power of the Holy Imperial Presidency.

/if your child looks to politicians and presidents as role models, you've already failed.

If the person is a good role model, I'd rather have them look to a politician or a president as that role model than the average libertarian.

axeeugene: And no one seems to remember that President Bush the Elder sounded like a pathetic bully on the playground prior to Iraq War Part I when he tried sounding all tough in a press conference by saying of Saddam that he was ready to "Kick his ass."

Plenty of people remember that because they remember people with the typical Fark-like mindset who were all over him (and Dubya) for that sort of thing - and yet those same people are all over anyone who so much as hints that Obama is coming off the same.

2010-06-08 05:55:14 PM
While the outrage is stupid, what is stupider is the president having to act outraged because of some perception problem.

I'm sure he's plenty pissed but would you ask Mr. Spock to act outraged?

No words offend me, but there should always be decorum.

I use the words "fark" and "ass." Even "assfark."

I would not use them in certain company. I would not use them on televisions unless it was in the script.

I do not think our political leaders should use them in public or on television. I find it undignified.

I would never say "Big farking deal" or "kick in the ass" at work. Neither should they.

I think I could be fired for saying such.

Yeah because two politicians bickering and cussing on the Senate floor is exactly the same as the President of the United States giving an interview on National Television.

Yep, exactly the same.

It was a classless and boorish thing to say and trying to defend it by using the " b-b-but the Republicans " nonsense won't change that.
