this isn't the only shortwave station like it. they can be broadcast from the US also. the purpose of them could be anything, but since there is no solid or official explanation, conspiracy nuts love to speculate on them.

That said, it's expensive to establish and maintain a short-wave broadcast station, so there was some reason for it even if just to harass or provide a red herring. But you would like to think that if somebody went to all that effort, there was at least something sinister behind it.

I mean after all, its not like they just erected an antenna in the back of a pickup truck. Supposedly they have a decent setup to be heard from such a great distance as Moscow (NW of moscow allegedly is the location) (new window to maps.google.com).

it's used to communicate with spies. think about it... shortwave radio that doesn't rely on line-of-sight comms or other communication infrastructure like cell phones and the internet which usually have a destination included, which reduces the covertness of the whole thing.

it shut off because it's been obsolete for a while and has been replaced by something we don't know about, or because there's wycked shyt going on. although i don't discount that some shyt may definitely be wycked, i'm going to vote for the "obsolete communication tool" theory.

Ionospheric radars are typically not left on continuously. Of course scientists want to keep the thing on as much as possible, but sometimes they need maintenance or testing. I interned at an ionospheric radar in college and they were all excited because they had just done a project where they had the radar on for a whole month and that was a big deal. Also, how do you explain the three messages that have been observed? I'm pretty sure the one I worked at didn't have the microphone hooked up to the thing lying around either.

My thinking being that it's not "research" as such, but a military ionospheric monitor. The military has an obvious interest in knowing the state of the ionosphere for shortwave communications, and that would also explain the lack of explanation for the transmitter. In fact, it would be very surprising if the military *didn't* have a facility for monitoring the ionosphere.

So far as the voice messages, those may have just been a tech calling out test or diagnostic codes to stations receiving the bounce from the transmitter, I dunno. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they were communicating with stations that receive the signal that they'd use the same transmitter.

The Dead Man's Trigger theory satisfies Occam's Razor as well, especially given that it was apparently a live recording the whole time.

I think it's likely that the recent US-Russian agreement to reduce the number of nukes has prompted a review and dismantling of the system.

Broadcasting a tone on a specific fixed frequency is important to military and civil radio operators. It allows them to calibrate their radios for one, and can be used to ascertain the state of the ionosphere, which effects the range of radio transmissions, and changes constantly.
