SweetBecca: I have a quick question. I am going to Michigan for 4 days to see my grandbabies. :) The lady who was going to keep an eye on our cat for us, had an emergency and cancelled. I can not find anyone to check on him. Is it ok to leave him for 4 days if I have fresh litter, a big bowl of water and a full dry food feeder? Maybe call and leave a message on the answering machine so he can at least hear our voices? I'm worried. We never have ever left him totally alone for that long before. Ok so this turned into a bug question, but any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

and now a cat...

This is the view I see when I try and look at the Caturday thread:

I think he would be ok for 4 days. Do you have a couple litterboxes to set up? I would set up a few different bowls of water around the house. Is he prone to getting into trouble, or mellow? You may want to kitty-proof your house, and/or shut certain doors to keep him out/in. Maybe leave a radio on, if you can, especially talk radio. Or even a TV, if you feel comfortable with that, tuned to Animal Planet. And yeah, calling couldn't hurt.

We've left cats alone for more than a day, as long as they're older. The younger cats get into too much trouble.

Does your cat like to drink water out of the tub spout? If you leave your tub water on a little bit so it drips, put a bowl under it, then the cat will have fresh water while you're gone.

Might want to have more than one litter pan. Leaving a litter pan for 4 days without cleaning it will make your place smell pretty nasty!

Can you find a friend or neighbor you trust to check on him at all?

fruitylips: This is Tony. He was about 1yo in this picture and not dealing well with how fast he was growing.

About a year ago, he started losing some weight. About 3 months ago, he started losing it fast. He had been about 15#. On Thursday, he was 6.5#. Vet is speculating PKD, since his father was huge and mostly unknown; mom is very small. *shrug* who knows.

He was 8 years old and passed away in my arms on Thursday.

Tony is survived by his mom, Whiskey and his sister, Cammi. He and Cammi have never been separated in their lives, so I am concerned about her now. She spends her day largely searching the house for Tony now. She is pretty sure that he is behind the washing machine and checks there about every hour or so.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. My condolences.

oddmind: Neecie: This is Samantha. She and her sister Tabitha were living under my neighbor's truck before they found their forever cushy home with us. I actually spoke to my neighbor to inform them that their cats were living in our home with us (they had adopted us). My neighbor responded that the kittens had gotten too large so they were put out to live permanently. This is August when temps regularly reach 110 in Tucson. This neighbor still had their mom (unfixed of course). I am kitteh abductor. Is there prison time for this?

I have heard that the law does not recognize the ability of a cat to be owned by anyone. So I would say that if you can lure momma cat inside, get her fixed, too!

Any law professionals out there, who can confirm this?

i am only a JD, I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice (heh)

Hm... I feel bad for missing other people who had critters go to the bridge - I wasn't fully awake with my last post. Please know the sadz and the hugz were for everyone who needed them! Ok, Time for more quilting. The future Mr. won't be home this weekend (he's going to run out of hours this afternoon somewhere in Missouri). This is his first run in the new truck (aka Caturday Express - he laughed when he saw the lols of the truck) and so far the truck is doing well! I had been hoping for a one week trip, but it's pretty obvious now it'll be closer to two weeks. The truck in question (minus the lettering - which looks pretty nifty):

I just realized my flickr account has a limit for "free" pics and I'm quickly approaching it. Do the other hosting sites have limits? I guess I'll just have to save pics I don't use much to the computator and delete them from flickr to make room if I can't figure something else out (really can't afford $25 a month for that).

This pic is cretinbob's kittens, my caption from last week (maybe??)

In most places it's illegal to abandon an animal. So if previous owners say anything about taking in the cat, a gentle reminder that they broke the law might just shut them up.

Can a JD help with IRS paperwork? If so I have some questions for you.

SweetBecca, if you don't have anyone to check on him, then leaving him alone for a few days should be ok and will be much less stressful to him than taking him with you. You might want to leave him an extra litterbox in case he gets fussy while you're gone. For the water, you might want to try a water fountain, with a large enough capacity for 4 days. The flowing water will help keep it fresher while you're gone and will prevent your cat from spilling it. Here's an interesting one (pops). The other thing you may want to do is buy some door stops so he doesn't accidentally close a door and lock himself in a room.

As far as calling while you're gone and talking to him via the answering machine, that may backfire and actually confuse him and he may walk all over the house looking for you...

Now...here's a cat with a duck on his head...

PSA: DON'T USE HARTZ PRODUCTS
In an attempt to save money, my husband bought the Hartz flea and tick drops you put on the back of the neck. It contained etofenprox, which is from a family of substances known to be toxic to cats (we didn't know this at the time, obviously). Recalling old Hartz-product concerns in the past, I refused to put it on my elderly kitty, but he has two young very healthy cats - Tiny and Bigness. The fleas have been really bad this year so for the price hey why not?

Immediately after he put it on Tiny she jumped away to her lounge shelf (she does not usually jump away from him, ever) and kept blinking her eyes. It seemed odd but she did not appear to be in distress. He gave it to Bigness, and let her outside, since being indoors is absolute oppression for her. We retired to our bedroom for the evening when we heard a crashing sound. Then another. I was up in a panic, and came into the other room where Tiny had trashed the place, panting, shaking, foaming at the mouth. I told my husband to FIND BIGNESS NOW, and we got ready to give them both emergency baths, not 5 minutes after application. Bigness appeared to be fine (she IS Big) but we washed her anyway. Tiny is actually average sized and very hardy, so if this could happen to her it could happen to anyone.

I went online to my personal blog describing our experience, and one of my friends pointed me to this absolutely heartbreaking site: HartzVictims.org It's filled with horror stories of people accidentally killing their animals by using these products. Please, be careful what you give your kitties. If you have dogs in the household, flea products that are safe for them can seriously poison - or outright kill - any cats you have.

We were lucky, all cats were fine, but many cats (and other animals) have not been so lucky. Hope this helps someone out there.

Wow did I mis-read that! Thanks for pointing that out, domari! That is worth it, though I probably shouldn't do it until I get a job again.... We'll see how creative I get (I have room for 20 more pics before I hit the limit). Lars just reminded me that's more than a bag of cat food (though it lasts longer than 6 weeks... which is how long the new kitteh food lasts). However, his argument is invalid because I just bought more food for him.

Probably a weird question, but... I bought pet grass over a week ago from the grocery store. It's lasted much longer than the stuff I've gotten from PetSmart/Petco. I've read online that you can pot it, but can you clip it? The ends are starting to turn a little brown but the rest is healthy.

And has anyone had success with potting the pet grass (not planting it outside)? I have an overhang that wraps around my house, so there isn't a lot of natural light that comes inside. I'd probably have to stick it outside for some sun. Just not sure how I feel about bringing dirt inside, Olive loves to get into everything.

Thanks for posting this as a warning!! Everyone should research flea/tick products before using them on your animals. Don't use the stuff sold in Walmart and supermarkets.

Another dangerous flea product is Biospot. Do a Google search for it and read some of the complaints and stories of what it's done to pets.

Stick to the brands the vets use, it costs a bit more, but your pets will be safer.

This is Penny, she was adopted yesterday and will live a happy life in her new home.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who posts on Caturday. I'm a long-time lurker and occasional poster (I seriously stink at getting the pictures to post), but Caturday is a major highlight of my week. Like most people, my job is demanding and seldom do I get to leave it at work. Knowing that come the end of the week I will get to sit back and enjoy some wholesome joy from a great group of people makes me smile. I love the banter, the comments, and of course, the kittehs. You all make me smile and forget about the stresses of everyday life, even if it is just for one day a week. Thank you all for making my week a little bit better, and I wish you the blessings of happy and healthy kitties! :-)

No new pictures of Abbey the cat yet, as she's taken to hightailing it up the stairs as soon as a camera gets picked up. However, she is engaging in many more "cat-like" behaviors. Her newest game is to pick up her catnip mouse in her mouth, walk around with it and meow until someone praises her for catching the evil mouse and gets her a treat. She's also getting more accepting of the whole family - including my brother, which is good now that we share a house. She's also taken to jumping onto the arm of the sofa and climbing into the window to watch Cat TV during the day. She seems fascinated with the newest additions to her favorite channel:

This pair regularly comes out of the creek behind the house and waddle up to where the squirrel chow is at. The squirrels aren't thrilled, but L'orange and Confit outweigh the them. (yes, we named the critters).

The cats love the saucer hammock. It's essentially a hoop where fabric is attached. There is no support except for the outer hoop. There is a whole bunch of other cat hideyholes in this particular tree. They have NEVER used the other areas.

I've got to hand it to SHG. Her tutorial has really helped teach me to post. I pretty knew the inns and outs before, but I didn't want to get starting trying figuring out - through trial and error - the few parts I wasn't sure of. Her instructions made it easy for me to not have problems., and I would encourage those of you with apprehension to try it out using her instructions. They're also easy to figure out if you just have one or two questions and don't need the whole thing (like I did).

Thanks SHG, I'm glad I can contribute and no longer just lurk.
