JerseyTim: You people disgust me. This thread is for the memory of Rue McClanahan. It is filthy that the scum of the Internet is here to make a mockery of the whole thing. Cut your crap and cut your "Betty White won" jokes.

For years, we welcomed Rue McClanahan into our homes. She gave us nothing but warmth and laughter. What did she ask for in return? Nothing. She was a comforting presence, someone who was there for us with a joke whenever we needed her. Instead of taking this time to out-snark each other, let's use the opportunity to honor the life and career of someone who gave us all so much.

RIP Rue.

Welcome to FARK.

darwinpolice: Guys, I submitted this same link, but I feel that the headline I submitted was funnier than this one. Can someone explain to me why this one was chosen over mine?

It was some combination of
1. The headline wasn't as funny as you think it is.
2. The admins do not like greenlighting newsflashes. It usually takes a surprising death (this lady was 76, not surprising that she's now dead), a really funny headline, or something that is really surprising and important.

listen here, you son of a two faced whore, I have been crying about this since i heard. haven't cried like this in a good long while. Probably not since my father died.

I mentioned this on TFD and a few minutes later got a sympathetic email from a good TF friend who suggested I try to lighten the mood any way I can. So I'm here, engaging in the RIP meme for a lady I loved, trying to make people laugh and remember the myriad ways she touched all our lives.

So before you get all self farking righteous again, you farking garbage truck of a human being, check and see if maybe people are cracking jokes because it keeps them from crying their eyes out.

Dwight_Yeast: HawgWild: WTF?

What? Gay men love the Golden Girls.

From what I've heard too.

I think next time my mom is up we need to have another "Golden Girls" marathon. Such an awesome show!

And, I know this may sound morbid (or weird), but does anyone else wish they could hide a camera up in heaven to see the reactions when Betty joins the other three?

/I dunno, I suspect it could be hilarious.
//Part of me keeps visualizing it in a late 80's television set with low-budget cloud effects for some reason.

She was only 76?
Golden Girls started in 1985 according to the article, so she was only in her early 50s during the show's first few seasons.

She looked waaay older than that. Interesting. Well, not really, but I felt like typing something.

Kitwilly, it was a beautiful headline, even if not very funny. We were reminded of what we lost, but without having it thrown in our faces. The mods picked you because you have a talent for tact, unlike some other posters I've tangled with about this. I think if you reread our argument, you'll find that even though JerseyTim is a tactless whore, we're all essentially here for the same reason - to celebrate the life and achievements of one of the classiest women ever to grace the screen. Stars like Rue are never replaced when they burn out, and the night sky is never as bright. I think we know all know that and are trying to grieve.

What I'm saying is, I forgive you.

Mine was "'Golden Girls' no longer plural"

Mine was "Guess now we've only got Betty White left to fapp to"
I guess they automatically passed on mine since I ended it with a preposition - damn you nazi grammar mods!!!

Great show - love watching it still on DVD :-)

VermMoney: All names sound strange the first time you hear 'em. What, are you telling me people loved the name Blanche the first time they heard it?

Great reference. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who immediately thought of GG Blanche when that Seinfeld aired.

Come to think of it, that episode was kind of ahead of its time. Fast forward to the future and Gwyneth Paltrow naming her kid "Apple" and other various celebrity crazy baby names.

craigmoz: When Rue had her stroke, Betty White said she sent her flowers with a card.

The card had a joke message indicating she hoped Rue would die so she'd be the last surviving Golden Girl.

At the time both thought it was hilarious. I am sure Betty is very sad today.

Considering the show was about 4 older women, it surprisingly attracted a diverse audience.

It's a very well written show. Alice was on TV for a long time with a similar setup.

Mel = Sophia: the wisecracking elder
Alice = Dorothy: the straight man
Vera = Rose: the scatterbrained rube
Flo = Blanche: the slutty one

Mr. Coffee Nerves: I think we're into the rarely seen "NBC 80's Sitcom Death Trifecta" here.

Will it be Ricky Schroeder being killed by an angry fan after handing her an autograph reading "Rick?"
Will it be Tina Yothers choking to death trying to suck nickels out of a vending machine coin slot?
Will it be Lisa Welchel killed by a horse...and by that I mean her stomach ruptures after eating it?

I sure as hell hope it's not Bill Cosby.
