It is about time.

2010-06-03 09:34:38 AM
farking lazers!

2010-06-03 09:36:07 AM
Yes, but was the plane piloted by dogs with bees in their mouths so when the dogs bark "Sierra Hotel" bees shoot out of their mouths?

This is important.

2010-06-03 09:36:38 AM
This has more potential than the missile defense pork project, plus it's freakin badass to have a laser, that alone is worth the tax money.

2010-06-03 09:37:26 AM
The LaWS system simply vapourises the target.

Damn!

OMG was the aircraft with the giant laser flown by terrorists?? So glad they stopped it before it caused massive destruction.

*HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF*

In the future we will see this picture and say "Wow look how big that was"

...but still not cure for oil spills.

Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a plane is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

FTA: The LaWS system simply vapourises the target.

So this is what living in the future is like.

2010-06-03 09:39:30 AM
I assume the navy likes it because you don't have to lug around all the weight from the ammunition. And the power supply on a nuclear vessel is not a problem.

2010-06-03 09:39:53 AM
The 'R2-D2' it talks about is the CIWS and those things terrify me. They track any target and don't differentiate friend from foe, already a simple mistake can cause them to open up on us pilots. All we need now is lasers to make it more deadly. Eek.

FTA: THE US Navy has a raygun - and it's a big one.

heh.. thats what she said

2010-06-03 09:40:30 AM
So where can I get one to mount to my car?

2010-06-03 09:40:46 AM
I'm wondering what the engagement range is - probably a damn sight shorter than the tracking range but still...

Also wondering if you need a nuclear powered ship to provide the juice or if its electrical needs are more modest...

Don't worry you're pretty flyboy head over it: by the time this hits the fleet we will have unmanned combat aircraft and you pilots will be redundant.

Cause obviously they cant use a different type of radar to identify the target.. or radio communication. They would just fire at any blip on the radar.

/sarcasm off

Laser weapon? Big deal. I just used a laser printer. Try to fathom that, if you can.

It's better unmanned... that way when we accidentally blow up a bunch of civis, it will be from an office building full of desk-jockeys who are already used to dodging incoming responsibility.

2010-06-03 09:47:14 AM
Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battleship!

2010-06-03 09:49:18 AM
Hmmm... It's cool, but how many follow up shots can this thing fire? Also, what's the recharge time for each shot? If it can only shoot down one plane and then it's done the thing is going to be pretty useless. Also, is this thing all electrical, or does it require gas/liquid to function? You may save on ammo weight, but if you switch out shells for hazardous chemicals that have to remain under refrigeration then what happens if that system takes a direct hit? You'll gas the whole boat.

/Still thinks it's cool

The REAL question is......

How long before we get one to fit on a SHARK !!!???!!!???

2010-06-03 09:51:58 AM
NetPimp: So where can I get one to mount to my car?

You and me both, brother. I've got my credit card out and waiting - what phone number do I call to order?

2010-06-03 09:52:00 AM
I like it when things go kablooey. But not when it's me.

2010-06-03 09:53:08 AM
Now we just have to convince the Fonz to jump the shark again. Justice will be served.

Intra-service slap fight! Not that I have much ground to stand on as a civilian for Homeland Security. I like my desk and lack of responsibility.

Don't try to frighten us with your sorcerous ways, Lord Bith Set Me Up. Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes, or given you clairvoyance enough to find the rebels' hidden fortress.

I for one am glad the our Freedom loving ally Australia is around to report on this marvel of technology that will allow us to help protect their freedoms(if they have any left by the time the system is actually deployed)

Vare are de nuclear wessles?

2010-06-03 10:02:41 AM
FTA: Unfortunately for anyone in the impact zone, that ususally results in a shower of shrapnel or the 20mm shell itself if it fails to explode.

The 20mm cannon in the Navy Phalanx system fires solid AP rounds made of tungsten or DU. This increases the engagement range and lethality against large targets like supersonic anti-ship missiles.

The land based Centurion system fires high explosive incendiary rounds which (in theory) self destruct before impacting the ground.

Is there a difference between complete annihilation with tens of thousands of 20mm rounds and complete annihilation with a laser?

I prefer the speed of darkness

while light takes time to travel.. darkness is already there.
