back when during wrestling season, i had a diet i called the 'deuce drop.' if for some reason, i was a pound or so overweight before a weigh-in, i would go take care of business, and wouldn't you know it, i made weight.
oh, by the way, i like commas and poor grammar.

Texnomad - Interesting, I'm 6 years younger than my actual age.

That seems correct.

Just to be different, I haven't lost any weight this year.

I have a take on this diet (and I could be totally wrong, not scientific or anything of course). I had a teacher early in college that said a high carb diet would work (cut out the fat, cause lots of protein rich foods are high in fat). It supposedly worked for her husband really well.

Anyways, back to the original thing. My take is that it works because you are depriving your body of something. Fat is a high energy fuel in your body. If you don't eat the natural energy source (carbs), your body will turn to your body's fat. I still don't see how it's healthy to eat alot of meat and high protein stuff.

Lukelightning - I personally think the Alphabet Diet is the most effective way to lose weight.
- To succeed on this diet:
You must make yourself reasonably familiar with the alphabet
It is recommended that you walk 4-6 miles a day.
Keep all portions below 4 oz.
Drink 12-16 glasses of water every day -
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My husband is a scientist. Why hasn't he heard of this breakthrough diet?
A: Science is a very personal thing.

Q: You recommend that we walk 4-6 miles a day and restrict our portions to 4 oz or under. Is this the reason that we are losing the weight rather the the formula?
A: No.

Q: Gee, it sounds like mumbo-jumbo to me. A diet based on the alphabet-- are you sure this isn't a fad diet?
A: The alphabet has been around for thousands of years, we have no reason to believe it's going to run out of steam now.

Umm.... sounds like a fluke to me, anyone running 4 - 6 miles a day and eating 4oz portions of food is going to lose weight, by starving themselves
and that FAQ, come on, if those arent just shrugging the question off....
talk about throwing together some pure BS, throwing little food and tons of exercise together and trying to sell if off.....

I've lost 40 pounds in three months. No Atkins. I eat less and exercise.

"Therein lies a problem. The body is not designed to be in a state of ketosis over extended periods of time"

Wow, that's really neat, because you don't stay in ketosis over an extended period of time. At the extreme in you stay in for six or seven months, and that's if you're just morbidly obese - and if you're morbidly obese the kidney stress is the least of your worries if you're getting the weight off. Most people go through ketosis for a short period of time, then move into maintenance. fark man, I don't even use this diet and I know this stuff.

Minoridiot: Got to admit I tried the Atkins diet once. It is a good diet for people who sit on thier butts all day long. The hardest part is the caffine and sugar withdrawals in the first week. Although I've tried it, it's not a good diet for me since I am a drinker with a running problem (35+ miles a week).

It's really weird that you wrote that, because I think the exact opposite. While I do agree that the caffeine and sugar withdrawals were a biatch (for the 1st week), I don't agree with the rest of you assessment. I consider myself to be very active. I lift on a regular basis, hit the stairmaster about 5 or 6 times a week and love the diet, love it. Main reason being, once the initial energy issues were dealt with, I had (have) more energy that ever before. I use to rely on ephedrine or caffeine to help me through my workouts. Now I dont need anything since I my energy levels are through the roof. Plus, I don't have to worry that the any of the weight that I lost is muscle, since I can eat as much protein as I want. (for that reason, many bodybuilders have been using the same type of diet as Atkins for years to "strip" prior to contests for years.)

Anyway, the diet works for me. The proof is in the way I feel, as well as the body weight I am able to maintain.

Chris Rock:

Too much food in American, man. We got so much food in America, we're allergic to food. Allergic to food! Hungry people ain't allergic to shiat. Do you think anybody in Rawanda has got a lactose intolerance?

People say, don't eat no red meat. Red meat'll kill ya. No, don't eat no green meat! Yo, if you're one of the chosen few people on this earth that are lucky enough to get your hands on a steak, bite the shiat out if it.

Y'know, you could always substitute some low-fat potato chips in place of the high calorie ones. For instance, these.

I'm doing Weight Watchers and I've lost 17lbs in 2 months. I've stopped snacking, drinking lots more water and am not eating butter, chips or full fat cheese. I have an occasional chocolate bar.

It rules!

"In the United States, about 45 percent of women and 30 percent of men are on a diet."

Definition of diet:
"The usual food and drink of a person or animal. "

It is sad to consider:
-statistics used in media are nonsensical.
-that that many people aren't eating.

2003-05-22 02:20:14 PM
I lost 100 pounds on Atkins.

I bet a British friend that Atkin would die of a heart attack..and the amount of the wager was..well, you guessed it.

I've heard all kinds of bad things about Atkins from a few nutritionists & weight loss professionals, but so far nothing that I haven't seen addressed in Atkins' book. A big part of that is that most of them seem fairly uneducated on how and why Atkins really works, because they're familiar with people in glycosis (sp), which is when your energy comes from carbs. On Atkins, an entirely different chemical process is feeding your body.

I do not believe that. A balanced diet and excercise is no secret. Robert C. Atkins was a scam artist that brainwashed easily gullible, low self-confidence people into trading in their fat for damaged kidneys and a feeling of euphoria due to chemical imbalances.

I view fervent Atkins followers with the same contempt that I do Scientology.

Ive been on Atkins since january. But Ive just stepped off of it. I live in America and mad cow disease just hit Canada 4 months back...

Um, nice rationalizing there, fatty.

I'm not convinced by one diet plan over another. I think the fundamental problems is AMOUNT people eat in the US. Look at all those Asian (developed) countries. You don't see this kind of obesity problem going over there. Maybe the US should see what they do and learn!

/my two cents

Can you provide even one scientific study to back up your claim that the Atkins diet (as prescribed by Dr. Atkins) damages the kidneys? Or is this opinion just something you've pulled out of your ass?

Delvach : get a forman grill. THis is the biggest thing that helps save time cookin so much. Plus all the fat/grease runs out into a collection pan. And it is easy to clean

Yeah, plus you can make some KILLER gravy out of the fat/grease that runs into that pan! Ask me how I know! :-D

I'm gonna deep-fat-fry up some 50 cent frozen burritos for the kids tonight, and am trying to decide if I want limas with cheese sauce or just some more bratwurst to go with my beer tonight. Decisions, decisons! Maybe I should finish off those chicken wings that have been in the 'fridge since the race last Saturday night...

NO JOKE:
WAL-MART is selling miniature deep-fry kits for frying Twinkies and hotdogs on sticks, like fondu style. Can't find it on their website, though, only in the store, at the check-out lane, as an impulse-buy item.
This must be evidence they are in cahoots with the cardiac surgeons.

I eat all I want whenever I want and never gain weight.

You should try it.

It's simple to lose weight. Reduce daily caloric intake to less than what your metabolic rate burns per day (not hard to determine if you do a little research on the internet).

It doesn't matter what type of food you eat. You don't even need to exercise more if you reduce your caloric intake enough. I did and lost 15lbs in a couple months. I ate whatever I want, I just made sure not to go over about 1200-1300 calories a day.

I do either 30 minutes on an elliptical trainer a day or a 1 hour leisurely bike ride, and drink only diet coke instead of the regular kind (after a while, you barely notice the aspartame!), and I'm losing 0.5 lbs a day!

Except that your body responds to a reduced caloric intake by lowering your metabolic rate. Does the term "vicious cycle" mean anything to you?

How old are you, MadSkillz? If you're under 30, then hey, I'm really happy for you that you're losing weight so easily. But don't be surprised if the same regimen doesn't have the same speedy results if you need to lose weight ten years from now.

Oh, and as someone else said, try Diet Rite or Diet RC instead of Diet Coke. Splenda has much less aftertaste than aspartame, and doesn't break down under heat the way aspartame does.

There's a book out there called "Eat Right For Your Type" which promotes the idea that blood type is indicative of how your ancestors ate, and thus how you should eat.

I just checked it out of the library today Cheeky, thanks for the recommendation. An interesting tome, although I don't think I'll drop the Atkins plan just yet. However, as a Type O, Atkins is more suited to me than a lot of other diets.

2003-05-23 01:31:10 AM
ok, here is the key - don't eat if you want to lose weight.

don't stop eating, just skip a meal when you have a good deal to do, if you don't have a good deal to do, then find something to do to replace eating. when you do eat, eat the best damm food you can get. simple... and it works, will let you know lifespan stats when i know them :)
